Abstract

Drawing on a multimodality theory, this study attempted to investigate the various semiotic resources utilized by a giant Indonesian cigarette company, Sampoerna, and explore how these resources communicate meanings or messages in its billboard advertisements to persuade its potential customers to buy the product. The data were analyzed using Halliday’s systemic functional grammar focusing on ideational meta-function or also known as a representational function in multimodal discourse analysis. The findings revealed that the billboard advertisements were designed to persuade the audience to buy the advertised products implicitly through representational functions attained using narrative and conceptual processes. Whereas the former was realized by employing its typical sub-processes, actional and reactional processes, the latter employed its sub-processes such as classificational, analytical, and symbolic processes. Implicationally, this study has illuminated the possible application of systemic functional grammar within multimodal discourse analysis domain to investigate implicit message(s) conveyed by an advertisement.

Abstract

This study aims to explore multicultural education values in an Islamic higher education institution. This research focuses particularly on students’ views on multicultural education values. This study aims to fill the absence of Islamic university students’ voices on multiculturalism. This study draws from several concepts of multicultural education values using multiple case studies approach. The data for this investigation is gained through semi-structure interviews and is analyzed through systematic approach. The result of the study shows that there is new themes appear in this research. These themes extends the existing multicultural values proposed and identified in the earlier studies. This study has both pedagogical and social implications.

Abstract

To fill in the gap on how tertiary educational environment’s non-native English lecturers in Indonesia use all motivational activities, this qualitative case study examined how they think about motivational strategies in the classroom, how they put the knowledge into effect, and how EFL students think about their lecturers' motivational strategies. This study focused on a single embedded design in which participants from a single organization were divided into two major clusters. Interviews with five non-native English lecturers and thirteen English Literature students, observation, and field notes were utilised. The participants believed that there are two types of motivation: natural and nurtured, with nurturing motivation receiving more attention. The instructor element is central to motivation, according to participants in both clusters. Both participants stressed the importance of getting a figure to obey. This understanding was positively reflected in practices where lecturers developed, produced, and sustained motivational teaching strategies in the classroom, demonstrating dominance. Sharing non-native English lecturers' success stories, contextualizing, and encouraging were among the study's specific activities. Motivation is essential for learning, but the type and techniques used can differ depending on the situation. These results indicate that a proper and replicable Motivational Teaching Practices (MTP) paradigm necessitated national or regional adaptations due to contextual factors. However, MTP components relevant to English Literature students were ignored by lecturers. Realising MTP’s importance may lead to successfully achieving learning outcomes in higher educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and explain the challenges Business English communication programs face when learning English through social media Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Twitter. Qualitative methods are used in this study. This study uses interview questions to collect data, the participants of this study are seven students from the business English communication program. Based on research findings, it can be concluded that there are many challenges that cause difficulties when students use social media to learn English. This is a tool that students use to monitor boredom, social media, and mixed video and social media.

Abstract

Abstrak. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk membantu mahasiswa memiliki sikap untuk tidak melakukan plagiat. Kegiatan pengabdian ini terdiri atas tahap perencanaan, pelaksanaan kegiatan, dan refleksi kegiatan pelatihan. Tahap perencanaan meliputi penyusunan materi dan pengembangan perangkat pelatihan, serta melakukan analisis kebutuhan peserta. Tahap pelaksanaan kegiatan terdiri atas proses pemberian materi pelatihan terkait pentingnya memiliki sikap tidak melakukan plagiat. Tahap terakhir adalah refleksi kegiatan untuk mengidentifikasi kekurangan-kekurangan, ataupun kendala yang dihadapi oleh peserta dalam memahami materi pelatihan yang diberikan. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa mahasiswa memiliki pandangan yang berbeda tentang perilaku plagiarisme. Beberapa masalah yang disorot dalam penelitian ini terkait dengan perilaku plagiarisme, seperti kurangnya pelatihan dalam teknik penulisan yang tepat, ketidakjujuran akademik, kurangnya akses ke sumber daya perpustakaan, kurangnya kekaguman terhadap sesama penulis, dan sedikit atau tidak ada konsekuensi untuk kasus plagiarisme. Kata Kunci: Perilaku plagiarisme, Pendidikan Tinggi, teknik catatan reflektif.

Abstract

Abstrak. Pelatihan literasi digital sangat penting dalam menulis artikel penelitian untuk publikasi di era digital saat ini, terutama bagi dosen muda bahasa Inggris yang mencoba mempublikasikan artikel penelitian mereka. Pelatihan ini bertujuan melatih literasi digital Dosen muda bahasa Inggris dalam menulis artikel penelitian untuk publikasi, termasuk aplikasi digital yang mereka gunakan, tujuan mereka menggunakan alat ini, dan tantangan yang mereka hadapi dalam menggunakannya. Di akhir pelatihan ini, beberapa peserta diwawancarai setelah mereka dimintai kesediaan alokasikan waktu tambahan. Hasil analisis data dari pelatihan ini menemukan bahwa dosen muda bahasa Inggris mengkonseptualisasikan literasi digital sebagai kemampuan untuk mencari dan mengevaluasi sumber online yang kredibel, menggunakan pengolah kata dan alat pengeditan digital, berkolaborasi secara online, dan menerbitkan karya mereka secara digital. Dosen muda bahasa Inggris menggunakan berbagai aplikasi digital, seperti MS Word, Grammarly, Mendeley, dan database akademik online lainnya, untuk meningkatkan proses penelitian dan penulisan mereka. Mereka menggunakan alat-alat ini untuk berbagai tujuan, seperti berkolaborasi dengan teman sebaya, meningkatkan keterampilan menulis mereka, dan menerbitkan karya mereka secara online. Namun  demikian, dosen muda bahasa Inggris juga menghadapi masalah teknis, akses internet yang terbatas dan kurangnya pelatihan literasi digital. Hasil yang dapat diperoleh dari pelatihan ini menyarankan kepada institusi akademik memberikan dukungan untuk membantu dosen muda bahasa Inggris mengembangkan keterampilan literasi digital mereka, termasuk layanan dukungan teknis, layanan akses internet dan program pelatihan yang memadai. Kata kunci:  Literasi digital; dosen muda bahasa Inggris; artikel penelitian; publikasi karya ilmiah.

Abstract

This study investigates the perspectives of teachers and students on the effectiveness of synchronous and asynchronous learning approaches in enhancing English speaking skills, focusing on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. Conducted in a junior high school setting in Indonesia, the research employs a qualitative descriptive method, collecting data through semi-structured interviews with three teachers and three students. Thematic analysis was applied to explore patterns and themes in participants' responses. The findings reveal that synchronous learning fosters real-time interaction, enhancing vocabulary acquisition and comprehension through immediate feedback. However, challenges such as grammatical inaccuracies and low student confidence persist. Asynchronous learning provides students with the flexibility to refine their tasks, improving grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, but lacks the immediacy of feedback essential for addressing comprehension and pronunciation errors in real-time. The study underscores the complementary nature of these modalities, highlighting the potential of a blended or bichronous approach to optimize learning outcomes. The research contributes to the discourse on distance education by offering practical insights into integrating synchronous and asynchronous learning for language instruction. Recommendations include strategic lesson planning, teacher training in digital tools, and addressing infrastructural challenges to ensure equitable access. The study also suggests further exploration of bichronous learning models and their impact on long-term language proficiency. This research provides valuable guidance for educators and policymakers aiming to enhance English language education in digital and hybrid learning environments.

Abstract

Studi penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan model komunikasi dosen dan mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran hyflex dan mengidentifikasi strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh dosen dan mahasiswa. Metode penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan disain deskriptif. Subyek penelitiannya adalah para dosen dan mahasiswa di Jurusan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Bahasa dan Sastra, Universitas Negeri Makassar yang dipilih dengan pertimbangan khusus bahwa kelas yang dijalankan menerapkan pembelajaran hyflex. Data mengenai model dan strategi komunikasi antara dosen dan mahasiswa dikumpulkan melalui pengamatan dan rekaman audio, serta wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa model komunikasi yang digunakan mengadopsi model Osgood-Schramm, yakni menerapkan empat prinsip utama yaitu: komunikasi keliling atau berulang, komunikasi berimbang dan timbal balik, pesan yang disampaikan adalah hasil interpretasi, dan memiliki tiga langkah proses komunikasi yaitu: mengkodekan, memahami kode, dan menginterpretasikan. Sedangkan strategi komunikasi yang digunakan adalah dua strategi, yakni langsung dan interaksi menurut Dornyei & Scott. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, diharapkan model komunikasi antara dosen dan mahasiswa melalui penerapan pembelajaran hyflex learning dapat berjalan efisien, efektif, dan kondusif.  Kata kunci: Model dan strategi komunikasi, pembelajaran hyflex

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the correlation between students’ learning environment and their vocabulary achievement, the correlation between students’ personality and their vocabulary achievement and the correlation among students’ learning environment, students’ personality and their vocabulary achievement. To achieve the objectives, the researcher used correlational research and the participants of this study were 30 students who were taken by purposive random sampling technique. The result of this research was gathered by two kinds of questionnaires and a vocabulary test using CEFR level test. The result of this research showed that their learning environment were very good classification, and for the personality of the students were extraversion and openness meanwhile for their vocabulary achievement was mostly in level B1. The result of the correlation between the three variables found that there was a negative correlation between students’ learning environment and their vocabulary achievement as the correlation between them was -0.38. meanwhile, there was low correlation between students’ personality and their vocabulary achievement as the correlation between them was 0.085 as interpreted low category and the correlation among students’ vocabulary achievement, students’ personality and their vocabulary achievement also found no significant correlation as the correlation was 0.149 which interpreted into negligible. It can be concluded that learning environment and personality do not affect students’ vocabulary achievement since there are others factor can influence student learning achievement especially their vocabulary achievement.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of using a cooperative learning strategy to improve student’s reading skills in learning using the cooperative strategy. The research data were qualitative. The research subject was 23 students. It comprises 12 female and 11 male students of the English Language Faculty at UNM Makassar.In the academic year 2023/2024. The research data was gathered through monitoring the teaching-learning process, interviewing students and collaborators, talking with collaborators, and photographing the learning process. The action research was carried out in two cycles, with cooperative learning methods such as pair-reading, think-pair-share, numbered head together, round table brainstorming, and group discussion as the main activities, with various ready tasks, engaging media, material handouts, and rewards serving as complements. The instruments employed in this study were observation guidelines, interview guidelines, and digital cameras. The results demonstrate that cooperative learning increased students' reading skills in various areas, such as finding significant concepts, obtaining essential information, and guessing. Students appeared more eager and engaged in the teaching and learning process. Keywords: Cooperative Learning Strategy, Reading Skill, Reading Comprehension
