Abstract

This study deals with enhancing students’ ability in writing descriptive text at the second semester of English students of Cokoaminoto Palopo University. This research is aimed to find out whether the use of scaffolding technique is effective in improving the students’ competence in writing descriptive text. The scope of the research is focused on scaffolding technique in improving writing descriptive text ability of students. The research used pre-experimental method. Population is the second year students of English Students of Cokroaminoto Palopo, the number of population are 240 students. It used random sampling method. The members of sample were 25 students. The research instrument were used collect data, namely descriptive writing (written test). There is significance difference before and after using scaffolding technique as a treatment. The researcher concluded that scaffolding technique is effective in teaching writing to the students because it can improve the students’ writing competence. The researcher applied t-test analysis. The result of data analysis shows that there is significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test. The researcher concluded that using of scaffolding technique is effective in teaching writing descriptive text to the students at the second year of English students of Cokroaminoto Palopo University.

Abstract

This is a pre-experimental research using one group pre-test and pos-test design, which aims at finding out the effects of Contextual Teaching and Learning approach in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sabbang. The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sabbang. The total number of the population is 149 of the all eleventh students. The researcher took 20 students as the sample from one class by using cluster sampling technique. This research employed writing test as the instrument of data collection. The result of this test is used to assess to what extent Contextual Teaching and Learning approach can improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. After several meetings, this research found out that the use of Contextual Teaching and Learning approach is significantly effective to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. It is supported by looking at the mean score obtained by students through pre-test is 51.55 and post-test is 76.86.

Abstract

This research concerning on the students’ verbal impoliteness outside of the classroom, when they were associate with others friends. This research aimed to found the type of impoliteness they use d and how far it influences the relationship each other. This research was conducted using qualitative research, more specific including as discourse analysis. The population were the English students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare and the subject were two students of the sixth semester. The data were collected by observation, interview, Recording and the data analysis using discourse analysis method namely by extracting all of the conversation to be analyzed. The result of this research showed that (1) the three types of impoliteness used in the verbal communication of the students outside of the classroom. (2) the closer the relationship, the more impolite the verbal communication will be.

Abstract

This is a classroom action research which is focused on improving students’ ability in writing a narrative paragraph by using short movie. Before doing the research, the researcher found that most of the students are still low ability in writing; they cannot decide what they are going to write. In doing the research, I asked the students watched the English movie then I asked them to write paragraph in English, then I asked to do peer evaluation, then finally we came to the discussion part. We discussed about the errors that they found in the peer evaluation process. Then, I gave suggestions and the correct way in writing paragraph to the students. This study was done in three cycles. In the first cycle, the researcher still found some weaknesses, then we tried to make some solutions, then we did the second cycle but we still found some problems especially about the students’ participation, then we discussed again, finally at the third cycle we got good result in students’ participation and also students’ writing were satisfied. The result of the research was that the students’ ability in writing paragraph in English improved. Also they enjoy learning English writing by watching English movie.

Abstract

This study aims at describing the development of learning activities in pronunciation practice class through lesson study. The number of sample is two passive students (student A and B) obtained by using purposive sampling. The instruments of this research are observation sheet and documentation. The data are analyzed quantitatively. The result of this research shows the learning activities development of student A and B has fluctuated. The learning activities of student A has increased from 2.25 to 2.7 in the second cycle, both in fairly active category. It becomes 2.55 in the third cycle and 2.25 in the fourth cycle. While the learning activities of student B has increased from 2.35 with fairly active category to 3.05 with active category in the second cycle. In the third cycle it becomes 2.65 and in the fourth cycle it becomes 2.5. It means lesson study can improve the learning activity of passive students to be fairly active or active.

Abstract

This paper describes the performance and the weaknesses of the English learning media created by student of English Education Study Program and applied at SMP Negeri 8 Palopo. This English learning media can improve the students’ vocabulary and the teacher and students of SMP Negeri 8 Palopo give positive response toward this English learning media but still there are many suggestions to the author. After analysing this media, it is found that the performance of this media have weaknesses such as: the material, exercise, pronunciation, and picture.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the extent to which contextual guessing technique can improve the students’ reading comprehension and also to find out the students’ attitudes toward the use of contextual guessing technique in reading comprehension. The research used pre experimental design with one group pretest and posttest design. The research used purposive sampling technique where the sample consisted of 33 students who were taken in one class. The result of this research shows that there is siginificant difference between pre test and post test (5.03 < 8.90). The result of t-test value and t-table (17.31 > 2.037) also implies that there is a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension after the treatment. It means that by using Contextual Guessing Technique is effecftive in improving students’ reading comprehension. Based on the classification table from the data of questionnaire, the writer found that the students’ attitudes toward the use of contextual guessing technique in reading comprehension is very positive. It is approved from 33 students whose their attitude have been researched, it is found that 18 (54.55%) students are classified as very positive, 14 (42.42%) students are classified as positive, 1 (3.03%) student is classified as doubt, and none of them are classified as negative and very negative.

Abstract

Most lecturers were still rely on the lecturing method to deliver material, how they use the media (whiteboard, pictures, cards) and their teaching methods are less than optimal and catch students’ attention, which degrade the quality of the learning process. The result of preliminary study shows that the previous English summative test score were still 50. It means that their score average was still for all the students in that Second Semester. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to instruction that can foster vocabulary development. The research design of this study was classroom action research, which focuses on a particular group of students in a certain classroom. The setting of the research was Akademi Bahasa Balikpapan. The subjects of the research were the second-semester students who took English vocabulary lesson. Data collection techniques adapted to the data to be obtained to determine students' achievement of English test by using Adobe Flash CS3 Media in vocabulary building project assessment in making animation collection that were contained with English sentences and their meanings. To determine the role of the student in the learning process with the assessment of the affective aspects of the observations obtained during the teaching and learning activities take place and the role of the student participation. The results showed that it could be concluded that the implementation of the Adobe Flash TAI strategy in teaching vocabulary could enhance the students’ Project on groups’ laptop in vocabulary the text. The observation checklist and field note proved the students’ involvement in text given.

Abstract

This paper discusses about politeness strategies and some factors influencing polite strategies to be used in the community of SMK Negeri 3 Enrekang, where it is identified as one of Bugis community in South Sulawesi. This was based on the observation we conducted in some circumstances of conversation between students, teachers, staff, and canteen keeper. In collecting data, we employed ethnography of communication using some strategies such as participant observation, informal interview, and recording conversation. The result of this study showed that there were four kinds of strategies used by the communities of SMKN 3 Enrekang, they were bald-on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, off record (indirect). It can be seen from the use of pronoun such ki’ and ta’ or mu’ and ‘ko’ and other particular words which show politeness strategies. The factors influencing politeness strategy were social status, age, intimacy, and solidarity.
