The name of REGISTER JOURNAL was taken from the concept of REGISTER and it has clearly been described by Trudgill (1983:101) as follows: Linguistic varieties that are linked ... to occupations, professions or topics have been termed registers. The register of law, for example, is different from the register of medicine, which in turn is different from the language of engineering---and so on. Registers are usually characterized solely by vocabulary differences; either by the use of particular words, or by the use of words in a particular sense. Registers are simply a rather special case of a particular kind of language being produced by the social situation. Halliday, McIntosh and Strevens (1964) devote a long section to "REGISTER" in their 1964 work. They also refer to REGISTER as `distinguished by use.'

The Experimental Study of the Effectiveness of Teaching Speaking by Using Cartoon in the Fifth Year Students of Islamic Elementary School Uswatun Hasanah

This research was carried out to find out how far the achievement of speaking English lesson by using cartoon and a significant difference of the students speaking ability between the students taught by using cartoon media and those taught without using cartoon media. The research was conducted at Islamic Elementary School (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah) Lancar, Wonosobo, Central Java, Indonesia. The objects of the research were the fifth year students. This is quantitative research. Technique of sampling in this research used classified random sampling. The result of the research is the score of the post-test from the experiment group is higher (7,68) than the score of the post-test from control group (6,95). Therefore, the writer might conclude that using of cartoon media proved better result in speaking skill than students who are taught without using cartoon media. It means that there is significant difference of the students speaking skill between those using cartoon media and those who do not use cartoon in teaching speaking. A Conversational Implicature Analysis In Oscar Wilde’s Short Story “Happy Prince” Faizal Risdianto

The title of this paper is a conversational implicature analysis on Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince”. In this paper, the writer discusses conversational implicature in one of Oscar Wilde’s short stories entitled “Happy Prince”. The objectives of the study are to identify the implicature utterances conveyed by the characters in Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince” and to describe the implied meaning uttered by the characters in Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince”. In this study, the writer applies qualitative research method. The objects of this study are ten utterances of conversational implicature in Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince”. Those conversational implicature are obtained through frequent reading and analysis. This study employed the researcher as the instrument to find adequate and profound data and analyze them. The procedures and steps that have been used in this research are: (1) the provision of data, (2) data classification, (3) and data analysis. In analyzing the data, the writer uses Gricean theory. It is a theory about conversational implicature generated by four maxims. Those are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. Then the last step is (4) the presentation of data analysis. After conducting the research, the writer found ten conversational implicatures in Oscar Wilde’s short story “Happy Prince”. In the short story, there are some variation’s meanings of the conversational implicature used in the short story which closely related to the conversational implicature; they are cooperative, politeness and ironical principle. In Oscar Wilde’s short story “Happy Prince”, there are six maxims of politeness principle, two maxims of cooperative principles and two maxims of ironical principles. Besides that, the reasons of the conversational implicature used in Oscar Wilde’s short story “Happy Prince” are to make us easyly understand the dialogue in the short story conversations and it is aimed at minimizing misunderstanding among the readers and literary critics.Keywords: Conversational Implicature; Maxims; Gricean Theory; Short Story

The Influence Of Listening Habits Of English Songs Toward Vocabulary Mastery Zulianti Zulianti

The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) to find out the intensity of the students‟ habit in listening English songs, (2) to find out the students‟ mastery of English vocabulary, (3) to find out the influences of listening habit of English songs towards vocabulary mastery. This is a descriptive qualitative study. The subjects of study were the third year students of MAN I Temanggung. The result of the research are as follow: (1) the majority of the students‟ listening habits of English songs is good enough that falls on the scores of 68-83, (2) the majority of the students‟ vocabulary mastery is fair that falls on the scores of 65-79, (3) there is a positive influence of listening habits of English songs toward vocabulary mastery. Caring of students in teaching-learning process should be one of the most important attentions of teachers. They should be the central body by which the measurement of success or failure is underpinned. Teachers will be considered successful when their students get scores above the passing grade. However, they must fail when the students get unsatisfactory achievements. Even though students’ success is the end of the aim of teaching-learning process but their involvement is not taken into account accordingly. To achieve such a goal, their internal potentials should be revitalized. The inner potentials include attitude, motivation, aptitude, and intelligence. The successful study can be achieved when the four internal potential are well managed. Cable TV: Bringing Home Native Speaker to Increase Listening Comprehension of the Students of English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty Muria Kudus University Rismiyanto Nuraeningsih

This study investigated the use of cable TV to increase listening comprehension of the students of English education department of Muria Kudus University. The aims were to find out: (1) the listening comprehension achievement of the students taught by using cable TV, (2) the students’ response towards the teaching of listening comprehension class by using cable TV, and (3) the students’ difficulties when being involved in the listening class taught by using cable TV are. A classroom action research was conducted with three cycles. The data was collected by using test, observation checklist, a questionnaire. The subject consisted of 29 students joining Advanced Listening class. The findings show that: (a) The listening comprehension achievement of the students taught by using cable TV in cycle I, II, III is fair, (b) The students have enthusiasm and seriousness and motivation in joining the class in all cycles, (c) In cycle III the students’ difficulties when being involved in the listening comprehension class taught by using cable TV are more and more decreasing. The Impact of Structural Competence towards Speaking Competence of the Fourth Semester Students of English Department Muhammad Nafi Annury

This paper tries to define any impact of structural competence towards speaking competence. In this research, the writer used descriptive co-relational method. It was used to describe whether there was an impact between two variables, i.e. structural competence (X) as independent variable and speaking competence (Y) as dependent variable. The subject of study was the fourth semester students of English department of Tarbiyah Faculty IAIN Walisongo Semarang. After the data had been analyzed, it was found that there was significant impact of structural competence especially in appropriateness. The Use of Conceptual Metaphor in Gola Gong’s Novel Bila Waktu Bicara Faizal Risdianto

This study aims at describing conceptual metaphor in Gola Gong’s novel “Bila Waktu Bicara” in the perspective of George Lakoff’s theories of metaphor. This research is a (qualitative) bibliographical research. The object of the study is the use of metaphor in Gola Gong’s novel “Bila Waktu Bicara” and there are 59 metaphorical expressions. Having analyzed the data, the researcher concludes that there are seven most outstanding conceptual mapping on that novel: time is an individual, the world is the hell or paradise, people is a stream of water, seeing is touching, eye ball is a container, body part is a landscape, ambulance is an individual. Among this seven conceptual mappings, the conceptual pattern of time is an individual is the most frequent use and it shows that there has been an increase of creativity in the creation of socio-religious metaphor of Indonesian young novelist such as Gola Gong. The Use of Teaching British Parliamentary Debate through Android Application, Video, and Powerpoint Presentation to Improve the Students’ Speaking Skills Surya Agung Wijaya

The researcher conducted the study to increase the students’ speaking skills through Android application, video, and PowerPoint Presentation in teaching British Parliamentary Debate. This study answers two questions (1) How is the implementation of teaching British Parliamentary Debate through Android application, video, and PowerPoint Presentation at English Debate Club in SMK N2? (2) To what extent is the improvement of teaching British Parliamentary Debate through Android application, video, and PowerPoint Presentation at English Debate Club in SMK N2 to improve the students’ speaking skills?. The research design of this study was Classroom Action Research. It had three cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. From the study, the researcher could conclude that the implementation of the study improved gradually from cycle 1, cycle 2, and cycle 3. The improvement of the study was showed when the researcher conducted cycle 3. The result of the t-test of cycle 3 was 2.56. Before the impact has not seen by the researcher in the cycle 1 and cycle 2, the result of the t-test of cycle 1 and 2 was 1. The passing grade was 72, and the target of the passing grade was 85%. The result of the post-test of cycle 3 was 90.91% from students. They passed the passing grade. The passing grade of cycle 3 was over the target, so the researcher stopped the study. Thus, instruments proved that it could improve the students’ speaking skills.

Tragedy and Moral Values in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth: A Structural Analysis Sigit Cahyo Purnomo

This research is aimed to find out the structural elements and the moral values of the play. The subject of the research is the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare and the object of research is its intrinsic elements of the play and the moral values of it. To analyze the structural elements of the play Macbeth, the writer uses the objective approach that anatomizes the work of art itself without relating to external factors such as the universe, the artist and audience. The findings of the research show that (1) The theme of the play is a blind ambition. Macbeth is goaded by his more ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth, to be king by evil way. He uses ‗the goal which justifies the means‘ to obtain it. But it causes the downfall. (2) There are two main characters namely Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and seven minor characters namely King Duncan, Banquo, Three Witches, Macduff, Malcolm, Fleance, and Lady Macduff. (3)The setting of time happens in eleventh century ; Meanwhile, the setting of place happens in Scotlandand in England, Though, Shakespeare uses the setting of place in beginning of every act. (4) The plot of the play starts from exposition, then it moves to rising action and reaches the climax or turning point. Later, it goes to falling action and the resolution. 5).Shakespeare as author always uses the third person point of view such as He, She, and the name of the character. (6)The language that is used is dialog language in the stage and it is old classic English.(7)The symbolisms of play which are standing out are blood and darkness. (8) The moral values are divided into positive moral values such as bravery, loyalty, affection, modesty as well as honesty, and negative moral values such as ambition, atrocity, temptation, vengeance. The Language of Street Children: A Sociolinguistic Study in the Regency of Klaten, Central Java Miji Lestari, Prembayun

The object of this study is the Â Street Children in the region of Klaten, particularly in the area of Klaten. The purpose of this study is to determine how Â do the language variations and the characteristics of the communities of street children related to the contemporary multicultural culture. The data is obtained from direct observation which is taken from daily conversation. The data collection is collected by tapping/recording techniques, âSimak Bebas Libat Cakapâ technique (Uninvolved Conversation Observation Technique), âSimak Libat Cakapâ (involved conversation observation Technique), taking notes and recording technique. The result is the discovery of a unique variety of language in the community of Street Children, the more usage of the Javanese particularly Ngoko Lugu level of speech containing âPisuhanâ (words of profanity) and insults.Keywords:Â Street Children Community; unique characteristics; Â âPisuhanâ (words of profanity) ; insults.Â
