Core Subject : Education,
The name of REGISTER JOURNAL was taken from the concept of REGISTER and it has clearly been described by Trudgill (1983:101) as follows: Linguistic varieties that are linked ... to occupations, professions or topics have been termed registers. The register of law, for example, is different from the register of medicine, which in turn is different from the language of engineering---and so on. Registers are usually characterized solely by vocabulary differences; either by the use of particular words, or by the use of words in a particular sense. Registers are simply a rather special case of a particular kind of language being produced by the social situation. Halliday, McIntosh and Strevens (1964) devote a long section to "REGISTER" in their 1964 work. They also refer to REGISTER as `distinguished by use.'

Abstract

Teacher knowledge refers to the ways teachers know themselves and their professional work situations. This paper applies the narrative inquiry method to illuminate my own teacher knowledge. Through each vignette told in this paper, I will inquire into what I know and feel about English teaching-learning process and illuminate my teacher knowledge by referring to what education experts say regarding particular concepts of English teaching-learning. My students and I will have greater chance to share the values behind the students-centered classroom interaction, the Internet-based learning, or other kind of learning to follow in the future when ‘we’, not only ‘I’ redefine education practices at schools Keywords: Narrative Inquiry; Teacher Knowledge; Vignette

The study used Research and Development (R&D) adapted from Hutchinson and Water (1987:53-56) and by Borg and Gall (1985). The study had seven stages, they were: (1) conducting a need analysis of the first-grade students, (2) writing the course grid such as lesson plan and map of interactive material, (3) developing preliminary form of English computer game, (4) preliminary field testing by English teacher, English learning expert, and ICT learning expert, (5) revising the English computer game, (6) trying out, and (7) writing the final draft of the use of English computer game for Teaching English to Young Learners. The result of the study showed that students got better achievement in learning English. It could be seen from the result between pre-test and post-test using t-test formula. The result showed t value > t table; 7.165 > 2.021, it meant that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The post-test was higher that pre-test. The mean of pre-test was 65.2 while the mean of post-test was 87.44. It was also strengthened by the result of the interview which concluded that students liked learning English through this interactive material.

The try out resulted student average score 76,14 that means the students achieved 79,55 % above minimum national learning mastery, 75. This study focuses on the written news item texts from the 3 sources, namely newspapers, magazine and internet. Since the three sources are available in one source, the internet, the final product is entitled ―3 News in 1‖ accompanied by Interactive Self-study VCD‘. Keywords: R&D; News item texts;  teaching & Learning materials.

Abstract

This research is focused on analyzing flouting and hedging of conversational maxim of utterances used by the main characters in “Post Grad” movie. Conversational maxims are the rules of cooperative principle categorized into four categories; Maxim of Quality, Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Relevance, and Maxim of Manner. If these maxims are used in  conversations, the conversations can go smoothly. However, people often break the maxims overtly (flouting maxim) and sometimes break the maxims secretly (hedging maxims) when they make a conversation. This research is conducted using descriptive qualitative method based on the theory known as Grice’s Maxims. The data are in form of utterances used by the characters in “Post Grad” movie. The data analysis reveals some finding covering the formulated research question. The maxims are flouted when the speaker breaks some conversational maxims when using the utterances in the form of rhetorical strategies, such as tautology, metaphor, hyperbole, irony, and rhetorical question. On the other hand, conversational maxims are also hedged when the information is not totally accurate or unclearly stated but seems informative, well-founded, and relevant. Keywords: Descriptive analysis ; flouting maxims; hedging maxims;  Post Grad movie.

The first procedure related to problems of classification i.e. cross cultural conflicts. The next phase of data analysis related to the colletion data of cross cultural conflicts in NW. The last phase is presentation the result of the analysis that had been conducted in this research. Having analyzed the data, the researcher concludes  that cultural conflicts occured in NW because of  stereotype, prejudice, and ethnocentrism. Cultural conflicts can be prevented if we increase our awareness of our own attitudes and learn to be sensitive to cross-cultural differences. However, if we develop intercultural sensitivity, it does not mean that we need to lose our cultural identities-but rather that we recognize cultural influences within ourselves and within others. Keywords: Culture; Cross-Cultural Conflict; Culture Understanding

Abstract

Magazine cover is an image that accommodates the readers with a critical value information of a news story. The essence of a particular story is able to be represented in a single page of magazine cover. It indeed covers not only the surface or real meanings, but deeper meaning soon to be analysed by the readers. The recent politician case relating Setya Novanto is one of the trending topic in news event as it impacts in the massive reaction from the Indonesian citizens, like making particular memes and even an android game. In this case, the illustrators of one of news magazine, Tempo, have to make a cover representing that event through the visual and verbal composition. Therefore, despite his trial status, this research is aimed at examining the extended meaning depicted from his picture from one national media by identifying visual and verbal elements in the image as the effort to reveal intersemiotic relation between those multimodal modes. This research employed qualitative method, by administering six covers published in 2017 representing Setya Novanto as the news topic. The image and text elements from the cover were identified based on one of metafunctions initially proposed by Halliday (1994), the ideational function. Thus, the intersemiotic analysis were done by relating the visual and verbal meanings (Royce, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2015).Keywords: magazine cover, multimodal, intersemiotic

Abstract

Various studies have elaborated on the concept of ‘digital native(ness)’, i.e. (an identity of) the generation of students who were born during the digital technology era, i.e. from the 1980s onwards (Prensky 2001). Those studies claim that digital natives have been exposed to modern technologies, and thus are familiar with using them in their everyday activities (Dang 2013; Jacobson Turner 2010). Those studies do not go beyond the access to and the general use of technologies. They ignore the fact that the ability to use technologies for personal purposes does not represent the ability to use them for educational and other specialized purposes (Stockwell Hubbard 2013:4). Furthermore, there is a gap in terms of technological devices and geographical locations which were considered by those studies (Burston 2014; Thinyane 2010; Brown Czerniewicz 2010). In these regards, by using a proficiency test and a survey with 60 digital natives from an underdeveloped country, this study investigated the effect of mobile technologies in language learning (MTLL) on English proficiency. In terms of English proficiency, this study found no significant difference among the participants, although some of them were making use of MTLL whereas others were not. With the fact that MTLL have the potential to improve the language proficiency (Park Slater 2014; Alotaibi, Alamer Al-Khalifa 2015; Stockwell Liu 2015), this article recommends how teachers should provide guidance and assistance to the learners in order to benefit from modern technologies. Keywords: Digital native(ness); Mobile technologies in language learning (MTLL); English proficiency test (EPT)

Abstract

AbstractRecount can be considered as one of the easiest types of text that can be written by students. This might be the reason why the text is learned in both junior and senior high school level. However, there are still a lot of students who cannot produce the text well. This study was aimed to analyze student’s recount text based on three metafunctions in SFL perspective. It is expected that by identifying students’ problems, teachers can decide and design appropriate pedagogical plan. The result of the study reveals that the student’s major problems in producing recount text are the use of subject and verb tense (interpersonal metafunctions), the generic structure of the text, the use of conjunctions, the grammatical errors, and L1 interference. Therefore, considering the problems found in the student’s recount text, POWER strategy is proposed as one of strategies can be applied by teachers in teaching writing, particularly teaching recount text. Keywords: recount text, systemic functional linguistics, metafunction, POWER strategy
