Core Subject : Education,
The name of REGISTER JOURNAL was taken from the concept of REGISTER and it has clearly been described by Trudgill (1983:101) as follows: Linguistic varieties that are linked ... to occupations, professions or topics have been termed registers. The register of law, for example, is different from the register of medicine, which in turn is different from the language of engineering---and so on. Registers are usually characterized solely by vocabulary differences; either by the use of particular words, or by the use of words in a particular sense. Registers are simply a rather special case of a particular kind of language being produced by the social situation. Halliday, McIntosh and Strevens (1964) devote a long section to "REGISTER" in their 1964 work. They also refer to REGISTER as `distinguished by use.'

Abstract

The study focuses on learners’ motivation to learn English as L2/foreign language. For data collection, questionnaire was distributed to 82 respondents of STIBA IEC Jakarta via whatsApp and face book messenger. In addition, interviews were also conducted to find out the detail information about the role of teacher and inspirational/motivational teacher. For data analysis, the step of sorting, classifying, coding, and presenting the data and drawing conclusion was adopted.  This is a research based article, which has aimed to elaborate the learners’ English learning motivation whether it is instrumentally, integratively or personally motivated and the most dominance type of motivation as well as the important role of teacher in motivating students. It is somewhat surprising that there are six categories found in the research, namely personal motivation (PS), integrative motivation (IT), instrumental motivation (IS), the combination of PS IT, PS IS, and IT IS. The findings have revealed that 1) instrumental motivation is the most dominant type as the first rank, which includes to get a better living, better jobs and position; PS IS as second rank, IT IS as the third rank, PS IT as the fourth rank, personal motivation as the fifth rank and integrative motivation as the last rank; 2) teacher who is resourceful, skillful, competent and has good personality plays a imperative role in motivating and inspiring students. To sum up, regardless of personal, integrative or instrumental motivation, teacher as a role model also determines learner’s success in learning L2.

Abstract

Writing as one of language skill is often considered very difficult. It is due to the fact that writing needs to produce and organize ideas using appropriate vocabulary, language use, paragraph organization, and mechanism. It also needs to turn the ideas into a readable text and for foreign language learners, they should also transfer ideas from their native language into target language (foreign language). It raises any problems for them to create a good text. Moreover, the situation in the class does not always supportthem in which the techniques of the teacher in teaching writing is boring and monotonous, do not give enough attention to help students explore their writing skills. So that they attend the writing class only for procedural formality. Thus, it is considered important to elaborate various techniques to build nice classroom atmosphere as well as to improve students’ writing skills.

Abstract

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) or in another word collaborating computer with the classroom component to enhance language learning has a long history of pedagogical development since 1950 until nowadays which started with the simple program into microcomputers. It covers all learning processes using computers which advance the language skills of the learners. In the language courses, CALL is implemented by using several applications but this essay will solely mention 8 applications out of many. The study cases prove that those implementations offer several great values toward academic life. However, in order to achieve successful implementation, the pre-conditions or requirements of the CALL implementation must be fulfilled. In Indonesia, the advent of some hindrances such as cost, teacher trainings are the main issues to fulfil those requirements. Alternatively, several recommendations are proposed to refute the problems such as schools and local government cooperation, customisation learning technology and peer school teaching. Keywords:  CALL; Language Learning; Elementary and High Schools
