Abstract

The use of learners’ first language has been debated for years. Some of the researchers think that using learners’ first language can be a help for foreign language learning while others argue that it can be hindrance. Therefore, this study focuses on investigating students’ and teachers perceptions on the use of learners’ first language (L1) and problems they encountered in using English in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom context. The study involved 150 students of grade X and grade XI and two English teachers in a high school in rural Karawang, West Java. The data were collected through questionnaire, interviews, and classroom observation and were analyzed using mixed methods approach. The findings of the study reveal that the participants showed various responses related to the use of L1. The result of the study indicates that the participants perceive L1 as facilitating learning tool that can help both teachers and students in learning process. Thus, it is suggested that teachers should be able to not only use L1 wisely but also encourage their students to use more English in the classroom.

Abstract

AbstractRecount can be considered as one of the easiest types of text that can be written by students. This might be the reason why the text is learned in both junior and senior high school level. However, there are still a lot of students who cannot produce the text well. This study was aimed to analyze student’s recount text based on three metafunctions in SFL perspective. It is expected that by identifying students’ problems, teachers can decide and design appropriate pedagogical plan. The result of the study reveals that the student’s major problems in producing recount text are the use of subject and verb tense (interpersonal metafunctions), the generic structure of the text, the use of conjunctions, the grammatical errors, and L1 interference. Therefore, considering the problems found in the student’s recount text, POWER strategy is proposed as one of strategies can be applied by teachers in teaching writing, particularly teaching recount text. Abstract

Reading was a fundamental language skill essential for acquiring knowledge, expanding vocabulary, and understanding textual information. This reading ability can be achieved with effective teaching, such as the SQ3R method that helps students more easily understand and remember the material. The aim of this research is (1) to describe the implementation of SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) method in teaching descriptive texts; (2) to find out whether the implementation of SQ3R method improved students’ reading comprehension skills. This research utilized a quantitative method with classroom action research design, with 21 students from Grade VII C of MTs Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang as the sample. The study was conducted in two cycles to observed and measured the students’ progress. The research instruments were classroom observations and test. The data from observation used to answer research questions about how the implementation of SQ3R method improved students’ reading comprehension skills. The result of observation showed that students actively asked the terms they did not know, discussed vocabulary that they found and concluding the content of the text. This reflected that they are enthusiastic and interested in implementing the SQ3R method in the class. From the test result showed that the students’ reading comprehension skill after using the SQ3R method improved their score to 18.73% from the mean pre-test 59.48 to the mean post-test I 70.62. In addition, the mean score of second post-test further improved to 86.05, with a 21.85% increase from the first post-test to the second post-test. Furthermore, the results of significance value were 0.000 > 0.05, it means that the students’ reading comprehension skills using the SQ3R method significantly improved. In other words, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. In conclusion, the implementation of the SQ3R method significantly enhanced students’ reading comprehension skills. The researcher suggested the teacher and students to use the SQ3R method to teach and improve students’ reading comprehension skills. Other researchers could also use this research as the guidance and reference to conduct the future research.

Abstract

TThe government initiated the School Literacy Movement (in Indonesian: Gerakan Literasi Sekolah or GLS) program in the Merdeka Curriculum as an effort to foster a culture of student literacy. This program requires schools to have a special program to optimize the School Literacy Movement. Meanwhile, there are obstacles in implementing the literacy movement in schools, namely the lack of literacy training for students with special needs in schools and the lack of availability of books at SLB B Yakut. With this reading corner literacy program based on local wisdom, it is hoped that this can be a solution to the problems above. The importance of literacy culture is to develop basic abilities and skills for a person in acquiring knowledge, skills, as well as forming attitudes for deaf-speech students so that they care about local wisdom culture. The purpose of carrying out this service is 1) to describe the implementation of GLS through reading corners and 2) to explain the impact of using local wisdom-based reading corners in SLB B Yakut. Methods for implementing service include: (1) approach methods taken starting from surveys, licensing, and providing motivation to teachers who will take part in training (2) program implementation methods, including the preliminary stage, socialization and audience stages, implementation stage, and monitoring stage and evaluation. As a result of this activity, students with special needs are expected to have literacy habits through reading corners at school. The strategy in the school literacy movement through reading corners prioritizes the affective social environment as a model of literate communication and conditions the physical environment to be literacy-friendly, such as making teachers role models in implementing the school literacy movement.

Abstract

Language learners are required to be able to use the language they learn in an appropriate context. By mastering pragmatic competence, it is expected that language learners comprehend how to use the language and how to interpret the meaning of the language in a particular setting. This study attempts to explore the realization of the speech act of requesting in a movie entitled Freedom Writers. To be specific, this study aims to figure out strategy types and modification devices of requesting used by the characters in the movie as well as its pedagogical implication for English language learning. By employing a case study design, this study analyzed the script of the movie and classified the request under the framework of A Cross-Cultural Study of Speech Act Realization Patterns (CCSARP). The findings reveal that mood derivable and scope stating are the most frequent strategies used and regarding the modification devices, the characters tend to use internal modifiers such as syntactic downgraders and upgraders. The results of the study suggest teacher to provide some authentic materials to introduce students to the real use of language. Further studies about speech acts focusing on the pedagogical implication are encouraged to be conducted. Keywords: speech act of requesting, CCSARP, pragmatic competence

Abstract

Introduction: Improving pathophysiology knowledge and critical thinking skills of nursing students remains as a challenge faced by nursing educators. Thus, an innovative learning method is required. Concept map by adding cases might assist increasing students' pathophysiology knowledge and critical thinking skills. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with pre- and post-test with control group design involved 104 first-year nursing students of Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Purwokerto, Central Java in April-June 2023. Participants were divided into two classes at the beginning of the first semester and randomly allocated into the intervention (54 respondents) and the control (50 respondents) group. The intervention group was provided typical learning added with a case-based concept map development weekly for 7 weeks, while the control group underwent regular lectures based on the syllabus. Pathophysiology knowledge was measured by using Multiple Choice Questions, while critical thinking was evaluated by using the Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory questionnaire. Independent-t test and paired test were applied to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the case-based concept map. Results: The mean score for knowledge the pathophysiology of the disease in the intervention group was significantly higher than the those in the control group (t=5.24, p=0.000). However, there was no difference in the average scores of critical thinking between two groups discovered in the study (t=0.90, p=0.37). Conclusions: Case-based concept map can be recommended as an innovative and effective learning method for teaching disease pathophysiology to nursing students. However, the case-based concept map in this study is still not consistent in improving students' critical thinking skills.
