The name of REGISTER JOURNAL was taken from the concept of REGISTER and it has clearly been described by Trudgill (1983:101) as follows: Linguistic varieties that are linked ... to occupations, professions or topics have been termed registers. The register of law, for example, is different from the register of medicine, which in turn is different from the language of engineering---and so on. Registers are usually characterized solely by vocabulary differences; either by the use of particular words, or by the use of words in a particular sense. Registers are simply a rather special case of a particular kind of language being produced by the social situation. Halliday, McIntosh and Strevens (1964) devote a long section to "REGISTER" in their 1964 work. They also refer to REGISTER as `distinguished by use.'

Abstract

This paper explores the distinctive features of the standard Javanese causatives in on-line editorials and short stories. This research is based on written corpus. This written corpus was compiled from articles published in an online newspaper Solo Pos. To analyze the corpus, I have developed a system of manual annotation to identify the features of verb transitivity, the animacy and humanness of the verb, the presence of active, passive and ergative-like clauses and the number of other grammatical and semantic features using a system of tags. Using this annotation, I analyze the data based on dua anlaysis: genre analysis, functional analysis using a quantitative method. The findings show that genre influences the selection of causative types (markers). Also, there exists gawe used as a verb of causation in both editorials and short stories which contradicts to the canonical rule of the Javanese active verb and Malihah’s (2014) findings. The finding also shows that the standard Javanese causative in online editorials and short stories occurs with intransitive verbs. The last finding is that active clause is the relative prominent type of clause which occurs in all marker. In conclusion, the above findings have made contributions to knowledge to Javanese grammar.Keywords:  Javanese; causatives;  causation types; genre

Abstract

This paper focuses on some problems faced by Junior High School English target teachers concerning with the content, formulation, and the order of Core Competencies (known as KI) and Basic Competencies (known as KD) and the assessment in K ‘13 (known as K’13). The material in K ‘13 is regarded as being arranged in balance covering the students attitude, knowledge, and skills competencies stressing on language skills as a means of communication to convey ideas and knowledge. Based on the K ‘13 implementation mentoring, 13 out of 15 teachers (87%) interpret the Core and Basic Competencies differently and most tend to be unclear. This happened due to the formulation, content, and order of the KIs/KDs which were illogical, in contrary to mind mapping, and confusing the target teachers. Moreover, the assessment system, especially attitude assessments are too complicated. Abstract

This research aims to find out the influence of classroom management toward students’ achievement in English.  The research was conducted at SMU Muhammadiyah Salatiga, Central Java, Indonesia. The writer focuses on the second year students in the academic year of 2004/2005. It is a Quantitative Research. Questionnaire and direct observation are the instruments used to take the data. The score of classroom management of SMU Muhammadiyah Salatiga is 87.6%, fairly high. While the score level of the second year students of SMU Muhammadiyah Salatiga is 72%. This score level is satisfactory category of achievement level of most students. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe slang words used in transgender community in Salatiga, the meaning, how to form and the functions. This is the descriptive qualitative method. The data are from natural communication taking among transgenders. The source of data is transgender community in the form of oral data. The results of the studyshows that transgender slang words is formed by borrowing syllables of Javanese and Indonesian language, adding with specific affixes, or changing into other common words. Transgender community inserts the slang words into Javanese language and use Javanese language structure to form their utterances. They use it as a secret code and also solidaritymarker inside the groups or between the group and other groups.Keywords: Slang words; Transgender community; Function of slang words

Abstract

This article is aimed to know about the spirit of American dream and its influences. The study is a qualitative study using library research and the data were obtained from texts.  The data are analyzed and presented descriptively. The researcher finds that The American Dream has influenced people around the world because America has very effective ways to promote their ideology through soft power “five big ideas”. The power is more powerful than military power. Abstract

It is a qualitative descriptive study that attempts to depict the componential meaning of the word ‘melihat’ or ‘to see’ in Javanese and English and the element of context that may influence the word choice in both languages. By using documentation as method of data collection, it is found that there are many different words having the same meaning to say ‘melihat’ in both languages while those words means that anyone doing activities of ‘melihat’. In addition, the aspects of intensity, target, distance, and connotative features influence the word choice in either Javanese or English. Keywords: Componential Meaning; Melihat; Javanese; English

Abstract

This article addresses the material on language acquisition in a social context and focuses on the gradual shift in the child’s use of words, from labeling specific and often single referents to the use of words for signifying categories of objects, actions, or attributes. The aims of this study are to search and explore the information whether the social context of second language acquisition occurred and whether it gives consequences toward cognitive development of the children. It can be seen from the results of this study that the rate and breadth of this shift varies from one social context to another, and that it has differential consequences for cognitive development dependent on the social context in which it occurs. The crucial significance of actively stimulating language growth in the classroom, especially by teachers of the socially disadvantaged, is stressed.keywords; Social Context; Second Language Acquisition ; Children

Abstract

Abstract

This research focuses on the semantics acquisition of a child with language delay diagnosed as autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). The research problem is on how the child acquired the ability to comprehend meaning. It aims at answering the questions on how the child identified lexical meanings and how he labeled targeted lexicons of his first language. The approach employed in this research is descriptive qualitative to get adequate explanation on a specific language phenomenon, namely semantics acquisition. Its design is case study with the type neo-ethnographic. As the data collection method, it uses participant observation of longitudinal study considering that the research subject has familial relation with the researcher. The data analysis shows that the semantic acquisition of the research subject has complexity in vocabulary enrichment. The research subject often performs echolalic speech when he is asked to identify or label certain object given. The typical idiosyncratic speech is shown by the unique feature of limited syllable and prosody. In general, his ability to identify lexical meanings is far exceeding his ability to label objects. He also has sensitivity to perceive the non-verbal symbol performed by the people he knows well. The use of verbal language supported by non-verbal language facilitates his perception. He finds it difficult to comprehend the lexicons having similar sound as he assumes that one lexicon represents one object which typically belongs to concrete object. In addition, the ability of the research subject in labeling objects cannot be developed easily because of his difficulty in expressing ideas through words. To pronounce the words correctly, he shows high anxiety by lowering down his speech. In selecting the lexicon he also finds it hard to use pronoun, to label homonyms and to apply both polysemy and hyponym. Accordingly, he tends to communicate only to fulfill his needs by asking things, asking the listeners to do or not to do something, and protesting something as shown in the contexts. Abstract

This article discusses how to make students of Science Education in first year feel interesting in English lesson, understanding the text well and can communicate English fluency. It has been suggested that Authentic Material and Automaticity Theory not only creates a friendly and fun condition in teaching reading but helps students to study comprehensibly so they are able to understand the text, structure, vocabulary easily, read fluently and they also can communicate in English. The authentic material can make the teaching learning process fun and eliminate boring because the topics and materials can be found in internet so it will be more visually and  interactive . Automaticity theory can solve the problem of students who must memorize words that make them feel boring and forget the words soon. The other benefit is the students can exposure the real language being used in a real context and stimulate studens’idea, encouarage them to relate themselves with real-life experiencesThese strategies can make the students understand easily and enjoy the teaching learning process. By combining authentic material and automaticity strategies for teaching English in science education, will develop readers (students) to become fully competent and fluent.
