Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article focuses on the moral teachings conveyed in the manuscript of QSKW (Qissatu Syam’un ibnu Khalid ibnu Walid or Story of Syam’un son of Khalid ibnu Walid). The manuscript of  QSKW is written in Arabic language and is a manuscript which its stories are well-known in several version in Indonesia. As a fiction work, this manuscript cannot be separated from the narrative structure building the manuscript internally. The background of the birth of Islam and the struggle of Prophet Muhammad SAW (Salallahu Alaihi Wassalam or peace be upon him) affect significantly to the narrative structure of the QSKW manuscript, including the moral teachings delivered. The moral teachings can be analyzed with the method of Roland Barthes (2009)’s semiotics, namely with looking into the manuscript narration as signs showing meanings in two levels, that is “denotative” and “connotative” meanings. The result shows that the manuscript of QSKW contains Islamic values manifested into the moral teachings based on the holy book of Al-Qur’an and Hadiths (words and deeds of Prophet Muhammad). This shows also that the QSKW manuscript is an ancient manuscripts functioning as the teaching of the Islamic values in the aspects of “tawhid” (acknowledge the oneness of God) and “akhlak” (noble character). The background of the fictional story represents spirit and persistence of the “sahabas” (companions of Prophet Muhammad) in depending Islam.  KEY WORDS: Moral teaching, Islamic old manuscript, fictional story, Islamic values, and figure of Syam’un.About the Author: Dr. Dedi Supriadi is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, Faculty of Adab and Humanities UIN (Universitas Islam Negeri or State Islamic University) Sunan Gunung Djati in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The focus of this study is to unravel the conflict between British and Japanese investments in the Federation of Malaya from 1946 to 1956, after the Second World War. The method used in this study is based on the method of observation of the resources available in Libraries and the National Archives of Malaysia. After Japans defeat in the Second World War, on 15 August 1945, between the months of September 1945 until 1 April 1946, the British administration of Malaya back through the BMA (British Military Administration) with all Japanese assets in Malaya was placed under the British Custodian of Enemy Property. Meanwhile, the priority of the United States of America policy after the Second World War was to stop the spread of Communism during the Cold War. The United States of America saw Southeast Asia as a natural market for Japanese goods and a source of raw materials for the Japanese industry, also as an alternative to relations with the Chinese Communist government. The Federation of Malaya’s iron ore mining is considered important to the United States of America effort in connecting Japan and Southeast Asia. Although it led to friction with the British, but their main interest is to overcome the Communist threat in the region, especially from China. Japan did not indicate significant interest on the question of retrieving the whole importance of their economies to the extent as it did before the war, there was only an effort to recover their position in the Federation of Malaya’s iron ore mining.KEY WORDS: United States of America, British, economics interests, Japan, and Federation of Malaya government.    About the Authors: Dr. Uqbah Iqbal is a Research Scholar and Alumnus of School of History, Politics and Strategy, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities UKM (National University of Malaysia), UKM Campus, 43650 Bangi, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This writing discusses the background of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad founded Ahmadiyya  and the response of Indian people at that time. Ahmadiyya was founded by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in the city of Ludhiana, India, in 1889. He was born on 13th February 1835 in Qadian, India, and died in the city of Lahore, India, on 26th May 1908. At the end of 1890, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad claimed to be “Imam Mahdi” and “Al-Masih” (Messiah) promised by the Prophet Muhammad to revive Islam and enforcing Islamic law at the end of time. Recognition of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as “Imam Mahdi” and Messiah is a revelation which he admits received from God, as well as the “Prophet” (for Qadianism) and “Mujaddid” (for Lahoreism) is the core ideology of Ahmadiyya. At the beginning of his activities in India, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was accepted by the Muslims in general as “mujaddid”. However, after he claimed to receive revelations and had been appointed by God as the “Mahdi” and Messiah, and even claimed to be a “Prophet”, then, many Muslims opposed it. The ulemas in India also imposed infidel to Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and his followers. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and his followers were downed on and isolated by the Muslims in general, because they were stipulated as astray and out of Islam. The conclusion of this writing is that although Ahmadiyya considered astray and infidel, but Ahmadiyya continues to grow and expands to all corners of the world, and now the movement is international. KEY WORDS: Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, Islam, Ahmadiyya community, revelation, astray, and infidel.About the Author: Kunto Sofianto, Ph.D. is a Senior Lecturer at the History Department, Faculty of Art and Humanities UNPAD (Padjadjaran University) Bandung, Jalan Raya Bandung-Sumedang Km.21, Jatinangor, Sumedang, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Madrasah is still interesting to talk over. Madrasah, as an Islamic education institution in Indonesia, has emerged and developed as Islam came to Indonesia. The madrasah has developed into some levels and types as the Indonesia developed. So that madrasah, as an Islamic education, has been a part of national education system. With the emergence of Law Number 20 Year 2003 on the National Education System in Reform era in Indonesia, madrasah exactly equate with public schools. This equalisation creates types of madrasah, such as madrasah “skill”, madrasah “excellence”, madrasah “model”, and religious madrasah. Until now, madrasah is at the crossroad, pulled between the maintenance of historical tradition and the adopting a new developing phase. Madrasah is supposed to be built on the foundation of Islamic values, the essential characters of Islamic education history, and the formula of future’s challenge. The Islamic characters and the popularity of madrasah is the identity of history reflected on its education curriculum. Madrasah is obliged to apply the bottom vision and mission of “pesantren” (Islamic boarding school), namely “tafaqquh fi al-din” (fully understanding on religious affairs), by increasing society participation in the empowerment of madrasah by implementing accountable management and quality oriented, which will encourage madrasah to be centers of excellence; and increasing participation, so that madrasah will be the core of learning society, capable, and integrated with society.KEY WORDS: Madrasah, globalization, vision, accountable management, and quality oriented.About the Author: Dr. Mukhibat is a Lecturer of Islamic Education Management at the Department of Tarbiyah (Education) in STAIN (Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Negeri or State Islamic Religious College) Ponorogo, Jalan Pramuka No.156 Ponorogo, East Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Since the end of the 19th century, indigenous-run press had developed rapidly in various regions of the East Indies (Indonesia now), especially in Java and Sumatra. In the beginning of the 20th century, the development of indigenous-run press developed more rapidly than before, in consequence of the fact that the press became the means of struggle used by numerous social, political, and religious organizations. The development of religious organizations, especially in Java and Sumatra, were influential as the press was used as a means for preaching on religious matters and was further expanded on social, economic, and political matters. It was stated that Islamic press played a significant role in the lives of the people. This development can be observed by the emergence of Islamic magazines pioneered by “Al-Moenir” (Enlightenment), in 1911-1916, which was circulated in West Sumatra. This magazine was influenced by the publication of “Al-Imam” (Leader), in 1906-1909, which was circulated in Singapore. While in Java, Islamic organizations such as SI (Sarekat Islam or Islamic League), Muhammadiyah (Followers of Prophet Muhammad), and PO (Persjarikatan Oelama or Islamic Scholars League) also actively made use of newspapers and magazines as their means of struggle. Through news and views, Islamic press called upon people to keep up with progress. Through Islamic press, people also were called upon to learn science, religion, and were given the awareness of nationalism. KEY WORDS: Islamic society, indigenous Islamic press, colonial Islamic politics, Islamic progress, and Netherlands Indies government.About the Author: Imas Emalia, M.Hum. is a Lecturer at the Department of History and Islamic Civilization, Faculty of Adab and Humanities UIN (Universitas Islam Negeri or State Islamic University) Syarif Hidayatullah in Jakarta, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The objectives of this research is to explore the geological conditions and tales about earthquake narrated by local people in Indonesia and Japan; and the local wisdoms contained in traditional houses in Kampung Naga, West Java, Indonesia and in Shirakawa-go, Japan in relation to seismic resistant. This research employed qualitative approach, an approach that tends to have a subjective perspective. Sources of data were obtained from literature review, interviews, and a FGD (Focus Group Discussion). The results showed that although the traditional houses in Kampung Naga, Indonesia and in Shirakawa-go, Japan have many differences, but both architectural models have in common purpose to reduce the damage to the building in case of earthquake. Building resilience in both traditional houses has similarities to the foundation and the materials used. “Rumah Panggung” in Kampung Naga and “Minka Gassho Zukuri” in Shirakawa-go do not have a rigid structure for their foundations, floors, and buildings. In the event of an earthquake, the houses just shifted their positions following the horizontal force of the earthquake. The buildings will move freely and return to their original positions after the quake without causing any serious damage. Difference between the two are house in Kampung Naga only uses materials that are lightweight and thin, while house in Shirakawa-go uses thick roof to adjust to the local climatic conditions. The people in Kampung Naga and Shirakawa-go are considered successful in building seismic resistant houses. KEY WORDS: Rumah Panggung in Kampung Naga, local wisdom, Minka Gassho Zukuri in Shirakawa-go, mitigation earthquake, and local natural conditions.     About the Authors: Dr. Ahmad Yani is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Geography Education, Faculty of Social Studies Education UPI (Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia or Indonesia University of Education) in Bandung.
