Abstract

ABSTRACT: A Bajau ancient sailing scripture owned by a famous Bajau sailor of Sabah called “Kitab Pelayaran Sampang Bulan (Sappit)” was discovered in Bum-Bum Island, Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia in 2009. The scripture is now kept by his great grandchild, Tuan Hj. Bakara Maharaja Onnong, who is living in Bum-Bum Island. The scripture shows that the Bajau community was definitely the famous sailor of its time in Sabah as well as in the “Dunia Melayu” (Malay World). They had knowledge, understanding and practising tradisional science, and Islamic Mathematics in their daily life. Based on previous studies, the content and the physical form of this scripture show that it is the only ancient sailing guide and also the oldest scripture ever found in the traditional maritime history of Sabah. The scripture and calendar show that Bajau sailors living in islands and coasts of Sabah, before and during the Sulu Sultanate’s era, have already possessed the significant knowledge and understanding on falaq that is outdated according to the Westerners.KEY WORDS: Ancient sailing scripture, Sampang Bulan, Bajau sailors, people science, Ismalic Mathematics, and traditional maritime history.About the Author: Assoc. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Since many years ago, Bangka’s tin had been recognized as one of prior commodities having been known by people outside Nusantara (Indonesian archipelago). Due to its high economic value, this natural resource had invited the other huge power from outside this island, intending to have control over it. In the 19th century, the map of political power in this island changed, along with the strengthening of colonial influence. Their political authority was connected to the maintaining of tin trenches. People were asked to obey the colonial provisions, as undergone by Chinese mining laborers. The difficulty suffered by the people and Bangka Chinese laborers had caused Depati Amir to struggle to resist against the imbalance. The battle was then continued by Depati Amir who tried to fight the colonial power in Bangka. One of the sources of Dutch power was their ability in developing administrative communication. Correspondences and report arrangement became the references to make the next fighting scheme. Later these reports were then used to be the primary references to reveal the activities of Depati Amir, Chinese laborers, and Dutch government in Bangka. This paper is based on the findings of a research some time ago, discussing about the struggle of Depati Amir and Chinese people againts Dutch colonial government in the mid of 19th century. The findings showed that “the archive tells the story”, that is by showing the contents of archives as a material to understand the story of Depati Amir and his cooperation with Chinese people in overthrowing the wall of Dutch colonialism.  KEY WORDS: Depati Amir; Chinese People; Dutch Colonialism; Resistance; Archive Tells the Story.About the Author: Prof. Dr. M. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Diversity in the writing of history is not just about the topic but also about the object of study or research in the historical writing. Spanning the history of the Muslim community in Indonesia was started since the vast stretches of the Islamization process and economic and political power were formed to the resistance movement against the occupation of Western nations with a peak of Indonesia’s independence declaration. Therefore, in the historiography of the Islamic community in Indonesia is very improbable that the historians with all their limitations are able to describe or reconstruct the whole history of Muslims from the beginning until now. Nevertheless, the works of the writing on the history of Islam in Indonesia have been widely written, both by Indonesian and foreign writers. One important thing about the history of Islam in Indonesia is analyzing the roles and position of “pesantren” (Islamic boarding schools), “kyai” (Islamic religious scholars), and “santri” (Islamic students in boarding school). Therefore, if we discuss about resistance movement against the Western penetration in Indonesian history, there are many events related to the resistance movement of the Islamic society. KEY WORDS: The roles of kyai, pesantren, santri, Indonesian historiography, Islamic society, and diversity in history.About the Author: Dr. Sulasman is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Islamic History and Civilization, Faculty of Adab and Humanities UIN (Universitas Islam Negeri or State Islamic University) Sunan Gunung Djati, Jalan Jenderal A.H. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Political leadership of woman in Islam in Nusantara (Indonesia) has been existing long time ago. But in Indonesia, its discourse more existed at the end of the 19th century. The strength of current understanding of woman political leadership as a leader (imam) in shalat (praying), it used at home and in the politics area becoming a status quo. The decision of MUI (Majlis Ulama Indonesia or Indonesian Ulema Council) – that forbids a woman to be a President – is not represent an acclamation in a comprehensive collective intellectual voluntary agreement, but the majority. Finally, their opinion has been dissociated by itself from the reality of leadership with division of duty from collective modern political leadership. The division of this duty made the leadership of woman can be realized in the politics area. Therefore, the political leadership of woman in its practical reality doesn’t have any resistance taken as forbidden reasons of the woman leadership, both from religion and ideological view.KEY WORDS: gender, feminism, imām, woman study, ijtihād, and Islamic society in Indonesia.About the Author: Dr. Haji Endis Firdaus is a Lecturer at the Study Program of Islamic Education, Faculty of Social Studies Education UPI (Indonesia University of Education), Jalan Dr. Setiabudhi No.229 Bandung 40154, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Ahmadiyah constitutes the modern movement in Islam, which was founded by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad at Qadian, India (recently, Pakistan) in the early of 19th century. From the earlier development, this school had been procuring the resistances from Islamic majority in India for having and developing some distorted Islamic teachings. Because the vision of the movement is based on the ideas related to the issues of “aqidah” or basic beliefs in Islam, which includes the concept of Isa al-Masih death, Prophecy, al-Mahdi, and al-Masih al-Mau’ud, so Ahmadiyah was also seen as part of the “Kalam” schools science or theology in Islam. Those ideas are what ultimately dragging this stream into the protracted conflicts that occur among Muslims. Since its presence in Indonesia in 1920s, Ahmadiyah had been confronting some various conflicts against the majority of Islamic society. The conflicts were initially limited to the theological debates. However, since the years of 2000s, the conflicts burst out into the physical actions, such as destroying the worshipper’s places and in the end turning up the victims. The conflicts involving Ahmadiyah and the Islamic mainstream continue to grow, even after the issue of SKB (Surat Keputusan Bersama or Joint Decree) of the three Ministers in Indonesia in 2008. This present research, then, is aimed at the description of the history of Ahmadiyah, including the conflict and its problem solving, which are conducted by those who quarreled, especially in West Java, Indonesia.KEY WORDS: Ahmadiyah; Mirza Ghulam Ahmad; Revelation; Prophecy; Religious Conflict.About the Author: Dr. Ujang Suyatman is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Adab and Humanities UIN SGD (State Islamic University, Sunan Gunung Djati) Bandung, Jalan A.H.
