Abstract

Late-night wakefulness has become a common lifestyle among Generation Z due to academic demands and intensive use of digital technology. This study explores the experiences of Qur’anic Studies students in engaging with this habit and examines it through a contextual interpretation of Q.S. Al-Qashash [28]:73 and Q.S. Ar-Rum [30]:23. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved 30 purposively selected students of the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Studies at UIN Sumatera Utara who met the established research criteria and provided data until saturation was achieved. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. The findings indicate that late-night wakefulness is shaped by academic pressures, digital distractions, and the perception of nighttime as a productive period. This habit contributes to decreased concentration, reduced quality of Qur’anic memorization, physical fatigue, and theological dissonance between religious understanding and daily practices. Contextual interpretation of the verses shows that the Qur’an positions the night as a period of sakan (tranquility), rest, and recovery, while daytime is intended for productive activities. The study highlights the importance of tawazun (balance) as a framework for harmonizing academic productivity, physical well-being, and spiritual awareness in the digital era. Keywords : late-night wakefulness; Generation Z; Qur'anic Studies students; sakan; tawazun; contextual interpretation.

Abstract

Research on Islamic educational civilization has predominantly focused on macro-level dimensions such as institutions, curricula, policies, and technology, while paying limited attention to the deeper foundations that sustain educational civilization. This article proposes the concept of Micro-Civilization of Education as a philosophical framework for understanding how Islamic educational civilization is constructed through everyday educational practices. Using a philosophy of education approach and conceptual analysis supported by relevant literature, the study argues that civilization emerges not primarily from institutional structures but from the accumulation of micro-practices that shape educational culture. The framework identifies five interconnected foundations: Intellectual Civilization (Iqra’), Moral Civilization (Akhlak), Spiritual Civilization (Tauhid), Social Civilization (Ta‘awun), and Digital Civilization. The first four are derived from Islamic conceptions of human nature, knowledge, and educational purpose, while Digital Civilization serves as the contemporary arena in which these values are enacted and tested. The study proposes a developmental chain linking micro-practices, character formation, educational culture, and educational civilization. It concludes that strengthening educational culture, rather than merely expanding institutions or technology, is essential for sustaining Islamic educational civilization in the age of artificial intelligence. Abstract

The concepts of paradise and hell are central themes in Islamic eschatology, reflecting Islamic beliefs about the afterlife and their ethical implications for human life. This study aims to analyze the concepts of paradise and hell from the perspectives of Harun Nasution and Nurcholish Madjid and to identify the similarities and differences in their interpretations. This research employs a qualitative library research method with philosophical-theological and comparative approaches by examining the primary works of both scholars and relevant academic literature. The findings indicate that Harun Nasution interprets paradise and hell through a rational theological framework influenced by Mu‘tazilite thought, emphasizing divine justice, human freedom, and moral responsibility as the basis of reward and punishment in the hereafter. In contrast, Nurcholish Madjid understands paradise and hell not only as eschatological realities but also as symbols of spiritual closeness to God and the moral quality of human life. Although both scholars affirm the theological significance of paradise and hell, they offer different interpretative emphases that complement one another. Their perspectives demonstrate that Islamic eschatology extends beyond beliefs about the afterlife by providing an ethical and spiritual foundation that encourages responsible, meaningful, and morally conscious human conduct in worldly life.  Keywords : Islamic Eschatology, Heaven, Hell, Harun Nasution, Nurcholish Madjid, Islamic Theology

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the leadership of village clerics in preserving the tradition of post-Eid prayer celebrations among urban communities in Jember Regency amid the dynamics of modernity. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design to explore in depth the experiences, strategies, and meanings constructed by the clerics and the community. Data collection methods included in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, with village clerics, community leaders, and residents participating in the study. The results indicate that the leadership of village clerics plays a significant role in preserving traditions through three main strategies: a cultural-religious approach, the reinforcement of religious and social values, and adaptation to changes in community lifestyles. The findings also reveal that the tasyakkuran tradition is not merely preserved as a ritual, but has been reimagined as a vehicle for social solidarity and the teaching of religious values. In conclusion, the leadership of village clerics plays a key role in sustaining local religious traditions within an urban society that tends toward individualis. This study contributes to the development of a locally-based theory of religious leadership, offers practical implications for the preservation of Islamic traditions in the modern era, and opens up opportunities for further research in this context .Keywords: Kiai Leadership, the Tasyakkuran Tradition, Urban Communities.

Abstract

Pragmatism is a contemporary philosophical school that has made significant contributions to the development of modern epistemology, particularly in understanding the nature of truth. This article aims to analyze Charles Sanders Peirce's concept of truth and its relevance to the logic of scientific research and development. This study uses a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach to the primary literature on pragmatism and works discussing Peirce's thoughts. The results of the study indicate that, according to Peirce, truth is not only understood as the correspondence between statements and reality but must also be tested through practical consequences in empirical experience. The concepts of belief, doubt, inquiry, and habit of mind are key elements in the process of seeking scientific truth. Peirce emphasized that the scientific method is the most reliable method compared to authoritative, a priori, or trial and error methods because it allows for rational and continuous verification. Thus, Peirce's pragmatism not only offers a theory of truth but also builds a methodological foundation for scientific research that is critical, dynamic, and open to revision based on experience. Keywords : Charles Sanders Peirce, pragmatism, truth, epistemology, scientific method.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of economic justice in the Qur’an through Fazlur Rahman’s double movement approach as an effort to understand and overcome poverty in Indonesia. The research focuses on the values of wealth distribution contained in Q.S. At-Taubah: 60 and Q.S. Al-Hasyr: 7 by exploring the historical context of the revelation and its relevance to contemporary social realities. The study employs a qualitative method with a contextual interpretation approach and library research analysis. The findings reveal that the Qur’an places distributive justice as a fundamental principle of Islamic economics to prevent the concentration of wealth among elite groups. In the Indonesian context, poverty is not merely caused by low income but also by structural inequality in the distribution of economic resource, oligarchic practices, and limited public access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Through Fazlur Rahman’s second movement, the universal moral values of the Qur’an are recontextualized into public policy reforms, strengthening zakat management, anti-monopoly regulations, and the development of community-based economic systems. This study emphasizes that Qur’anic teachings possess transformative relevance in building a more just, inclusive, and socially oriented economic system.
