Abstract

This study investigates the dynamics, cultural-theological negotiations, and recontextualization of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) practices in Jember Regency. This issue demands urgent examination due to the high prevalence of FGM/C among infants aged 0–11 months, which directly conflicts with the national policy advocating for the total eradication of all forms of non-medical female genital modification. Utilizing a qualitative approach with an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) design, primary data were gathered through collaborative Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and digital-based rapid surveys involving health policymakers, religious organization cadres, and traditional practitioners. This was further reinforced by a critical documentation study of religious texts and positive law regulations. Data analysis was systematically executed through thematic-phenomenological stages, framed by Michel Foucault’s power relations analytical lens. The findings reveal that the persistence of FGM/C at the grassroots level is perpetuated by a patriarchal "regime of truth" that constructs myths regarding the control of female sexuality and requirements for spiritual purity. However, through the relational structure of idhafah (the annexation of two nouns in Arabic) within Islam Nusantara (li, fi, and min Nusantara), this study formulates an emancipatory "Alternative Fiqh." This formulation shifts the community paradigm from destructive physical circumcision toward total abolition in order to uphold the principles of maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah, specifically hifẓ al-nafs (preservation of life) and hifẓ al-‘ird (preservation of human dignity). The implications of this study underscore the necessity of pesantren-based theological deconstruction, cultural de-legitimization within majelis taklim, and the strengthening of local data registry systems to comprehensively implement Government Regulation Number 28 of 2024. Future research is suggested to expand the locus to map cultural resistance following the enforcement of national regulations in the Tapal Kuda  region. Abstract

This study aims to examine the contribution of Islamic feminism to the development of an inclusive gender-interpretation paradigm through a conceptual synthesis of the ideas of Amina Wadud, Fatima Mernissi, and Asma Lamrabet. A qualitative approach with a library research design was employed. Primary data were drawn from the major works of the three scholars, while secondary data consisted of relevant books and peer-reviewed journal articles. The data were analyzed using critical hermeneutics, qualitative content analysis, and comparative analysis to identify conceptual similarities, differences, and complementarities. The findings reveal that gender inequality in many Muslim societies is rooted primarily in patriarchal interpretations of Islamic texts rather than in the normative teachings of Islam. The integration of tawhidic hermeneutics, historical criticism, and the maqāṣid al-sharīʿah approach provides a contextual, humanistic, and justice-oriented framework for gender interpretation. The novelty of this study lies in proposing an integrative Islamic feminist paradigm that synthesizes these three perspectives into a comprehensive conceptual framework to advance inclusive gender interpretation in contemporary Islamic studies, education, and public policy. Keywords: Islamic feminism; gender equality; inclusive gender interpretation; tawhidic hermeneutics; maqāṣid al-sharīʿah; Amina Wadud; Fatima Mernissi; Asma Lamrabet.

Abstract

Traditional village healing practices, as a sociocultural heritage, continue to exist in the modern era, including in Jawa Maraja Bahjambi District, Simalungun Regency. This study aims to examine how local communities receive and practice hadith-related healing norms, and to critically analyze the extent to which village healing practices align with Islamic jurisprudence through the perspective of Living Hadith. This qualitative field research employs a descriptive case study design. Data were gathered through observation, in-depth interviews with two local practitioners (JS and WD) selected through purposive sampling, and documentation. Data validity was tested through source and technique triangulation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results demonstrate the phenomenon of religious syncretism in two main aspects. First, in the material dimension, the use of irrational ingredients such as grave moss and the fetishism of the number seven regarding water sources are assessed as ad-dawa’ al-khabith (foul medicine) based on the Hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah. Second, in the performative dimension, claims of the ability to see and converse with khodam jinn (Opung or prewangan) are assessed as batil (invalid) based on the Hadith of Ibn Abbas and Quranic verses. The novelty of this research lies in its use of hadith as the primary analytical instrument for examining healing practices in the Jawa Maraja Bahjambi area, integrating both material and performative dimensions within a single Living Hadith framework. Abstract

Interfaith marriage remains a highly debated issue in Islamic law and contemporary family law. This study aims to analyze the perspectives of the four Sunni schools of Islamic jurisprudence on interfaith marriage, compare the legal regulations governing interfaith marriage in Indonesia and Jordan, and examine the relationship between classical Islamic legal doctrines and the positive laws implemented in both countries. This research employs a normative legal method using a comparative approach and library research. The data were collected from classical fiqh literature of the four sunni schools, statutory regulations, and relevant scholarly works. The findings reveal that all sunni schools of jurisprudence unanimously prohibit marriages between muslim women and non-muslim men. However, they differ regarding the extent to which muslim men may marry women from the ahl al-kitab (People of the Book). In terms of positive law, both Indonesia and Jordan regard religion as a fundamental basis for the legal validity of marriage, yet they adopt different regulatory models. Indonesia applies a pluralistic legal system in which marriage regulations result from the interaction between state law, religious law, and population administration policies. In contrast, Jordan directly incorporates Islamic family law throughthe Jordanian Personal Status Law, which is strongly influenced by the Hanafi school of jurisprudence. This study finds that the relationship between fiqh and positive law in Jordan is direct and integrative, whereas in Indonesia it is characterized by a compromise-oriented and accommodative approach through negotiations among fiqh norms, national legal pluralism, and state administrative policies. Abstract

This study aims to analyze Generation Z students' understanding of dress ethics from the perspective of Surah An-Nur verse 31 using Tafsir Al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab as the primary analytical framework. The novelty of this study lies in its examination of the gap between Generation Z students’ religious understanding and their dressing practices amid the influence of digital culture and contemporary fashion trends. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three Generation Z university students selected purposively and were analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Generation Z students’ understanding of dress ethics remains predominantly normative, focusing on the obligation to cover the aurat, and has not fully encompassed the moral, social, and spiritual dimensions emphasized in Tafsir Al-Mishbah. This finding is reflected in the participants’ tendency to interpret clothing primarily as a means of covering the aurat rather than as an expression of modesty, dignity, and moral responsibility as outlined in Surah An-Nur verse 31. Furthermore, the participants’ dressing practices were influenced by social media, fashion trends, and their social environment, creating a discrepancy between religious understanding and its practical implementation. Tafsir Al-Mishbah emphasizes that dress ethics are not merely concerned with covering the aurat but also with preserving the identity, dignity, and morality of Muslim women. This study highlights the relationship between Generation Z students’ religious understanding and the influence of digital culture in shaping their perceptions and practices of dress ethics. Keywords: dress ethics, Generation Z, Surah An-Nur verse 31, Tafsir Al-Mishbah, students.

Abstract

Background: Meeting nutritional needs for school aged children is crucial for supporting physical growth and cognitive development during the learning process. Problem: Government policies like the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program need to be examined not only from modern health sciences but also regarding how these practices align with Islamic principles. Objective & Urgency: This study aims to analyze the implementation of the MBG program at SDI Ar-Ridha, Medan Marelan, through the lens of Prophet Muhammad’s hadiths on healthy dietary patterns. This research is urgent because integratingIslamic values with nutritional fulfillment demonstrates that healthy eating is both a biological need and a religious duty. Methods: This qualitative field research employed a case study approach. Data were gathered through observations, documentation, and semi-structured interviews with 13 informants, including the school principal, teachers, and students. Findings & Discussion: The findings reveal that the MBG program at SDI Ar-Ridha is well structured, adjusted to school shifts, and serves balanced menus containing carbohydrates, animal and plant proteins, vitamins, and minerals. In the discussion, these menus featuring chicken, fish, and cucumbers show direct alignment with authentic hadiths regarding the Prophet's preferred foods and the concept of thayyib (wholesome) consumption. Conclusion: This study concludes that theimplementation of the MBG program at SDI Ar-Ridha successfully reflects the Islamic perspective on balanced and beneficial dietary patterns to maintain physical health and support student learning effectively. Abstract

Global ecological crises, such as deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity loss, demand responses that integrate science, public policy, and religious values. In Islam, the hadith encouraging tree planting—particularly as narrated by al-Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad, Ahmad, and Abu Dawud—provides an important foundation for Islamic eco-theology. This study examines the spiritual and ecological values embedded in this hadith through an analysis of its isnad, matn, and their relevance to contemporary ecological findings. Employing a qualitative library research approach, the study uses content analysis alongside isnad and matn criticism, drawing on classical hadith collections, commentaries, and modern ecological literature. The findings indicate that the hadith is authenticated as sahih, as all of its transmitters are regarded as thiqah (trustworthy). Its matn emphasises optimism, diligence, intergenerational benefit, and the enduring reward of ṣadaqah jariyah (continuous charity). Ecologically, the hadith aligns with contemporary scientific understanding of the role of plants in oxygen production, water conservation, erosion control, food provision, soil enrichment through composting, biodiversity conservation, and the sustainable use of timber. It integrates spiritual, social, ecological, and economic dimensions into a coherent framework. The study concludes that the exhortation to plant is not merely an individual act of worship but an intergenerational investment linking piety, human well-being, and environmental sustainability. The study's novelty lies in its focused examination of the hadith encouraging planting even when the Day of Judgement is imminent and in its dialogue with contemporary ecological scholarship.  Keywords: Ecotheology, hadith on planting, environmental conservation, ongoing charity, ecological relevance

Abstract

This article analyzes the concept of monotheism in Surah Al-Ikhlas in the Tafsir Juz ’Amma by Ustadz Firanda Andirja, Lc., M.A. This research not only examines the results of his interpretation, but also traces the continuity and changes in Firanda's thinking with classical commentators. The research uses a qualitative method based on literature study with Walid Saleh's genealogical theory approach to identify the epistemological origins, scientific traditions, and ideological tendencies that shape his interpretation. The results show that, first, Firanda interprets monotheism as a combination of tanzih (purification of Allah from all forms of polytheism) and itsbat (establishment of the oneness of Allah in all aspects of divinity). Second, genealogically, his interpretation has continuity with the Tafsir AlQurthubi, Tafsir At-Thabari, and Tafsir As-Sam'ani. Third, this interpretation is textual-theological, rooted in contemporary Salafi tradition, and serves as an instrument for purifying faith in the context ofIndonesian Muslim society. This research demonstrates that Firanda's interpretation not only represents continuity with classical interpretations but also demonstrates its transformation in the contemporary Salafi context in Indonesia. Abstract

This study examines the contextualization of Abbasid educational values in fostering the character of tolerance among multicultural students at MA Mahrusiyah Lirboyo Kediri. The study is grounded in the need for Islamic education to effectively manage student diversity through the reinforcement of tolerance values. Unlike previous studies that primarily discuss Abbasid education as a historical phenomenon or character education in pesantren through local religious traditions, this study proposes a conceptual framework that contextualizes Abbasid educational values into three interrelated dimensions: social inclusiveness, argumentative dialogue, and intellectual openness for fostering tolerance in multicultural Islamic education. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the inclusive values of Bayt al-Hikmah are contextualized through cross-regional interaction and collaboration that foster social tolerance. The tradition of munāẓarah is actualized through deliberation, bahtsul masā'il, and academic discussions, which cultivate tolerance toward differences of opinion. Meanwhile, the intellectual openness of the Abbasid era is manifested through the integration of traditional and modern sources of knowledge, resulting in intellectual tolerance. The study concludes that Abbasid educational values remain relevant to contemporary Islamic education and offer a conceptual model for developing tolerance among multicultural students. Keywords : Abbasid education, character of tolerance, multicultural students, Islamic education, contextualization of values.
