Abstract

This research analyzed the political message processing of the voters of Prabowo-Hatta and Jokowi-JK in the Presidential Election 2014 in West Jakarta. The aim was to determine the influence of systematic and heuristic political message processing in the decision of beginner voters. Also, it targeted the political message processing model in the Presidential Election 2014. Quantitative research was used by conducting a survey and heuristic-systematic model was picked as the theory. It was derived into three variables, namely heuristic process variable, systematic process variable, and decision to choose president variable,. The result showed that the decision to vote Prabowo-Hatta was influenced more by systematic than heuristic political messages. On the other hand, the decision to elect Jokowi-JK was influenced more by heuristic than systematic political messages. If Prabowo-Hatta wished to improve their voters, they could strengthen the heuristic political message (emotional message), while for Jokowi / JK, they could strengthen the systematic political message (rational message).

Abstract

Social media is one of the fields for spreading hoaxes or fake news. This study compared the spread patterns of hoax between Generation X and Generation Z. This study used McPrenski's Generation Theory and the concepts of DeFleur and Ball-Rokeach regarding social categories theory. A survey was conducted in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta province, and the sample size was 240. The research was held before the Indonesia General Election2019 due to the high spread of political hoaxes. The hypothesis was tested using the T-test formula. The results showed that there were differences in hoax distribution patterns between both generations. Generation X looked more active in spreading hoax compared to Generation Z. This finding confirmed the Generation Theory and the terminology of digital immigrants and digital natives. The findings can be considered positive since Generation Z, which will be more active in the future, seemed less interested in hoaxes and tended to be more digitally literate. The digital literacy movement should consider the specificities of each target group because each group has different characteristics.

Abstract

The advancement of technology and society has led to innovations, including in the field of media. Media convergence has given birth to a novel audiovisual medium called Video-on-Demand (VOD), which combined the logics of television, film, home video, the internet, as well as technology. This conceptual research applied a literature review method to discuss the journey of the logic of watching television with a specific schedule and a particular medium to the understanding that television, after all, is just an artifact. The paper also discussed new habits that are developed due to the birth of VOD and how VOD branding worked. This research aimed to look at how the development of media convergence in the form of VOD brought new trends, especially in Indonesia. The paper concluded that many new opportunities were ready to be utilized by VOD platforms to develop their content and reach Indonesian audiences. However, it was also necessary to consider that Indonesia’s regulations still were not utterly supporting the development of VOD.

Abstract

The research analyzed the perspectives of Indonesian students that were located in Nanjing by using Jean Baudrillard's theory of simulacra. Recently, China had been trying to revive the silk road, a line connecting the world through trade, that used to be gainful in the past, with a route called the belt road initiative. This program had unlocked China's cooperation gates with many other countries from all over the world, although much undesirable information circulated regarding this initiative, ranging from environmental issues to rumor on the sovereignty of the state of China’s partner. Through simulacra’s logic, the author outlined the perspective of Indonesian students that had studied in Nanjing, China, towards the belt road initiative. The research found that even though the students had long felt education in China and assimilated much knowledge about this country quite first-hand, they did not necessarily believe that this new route would benefit their homeland.

Abstract

Dissemination of information through social media is prone to high school students because of its high social media usage activities. Students need to have propaganda awareness (awareness of the existence of propaganda practices), which is mainly disseminated through news or other media content. By having propaganda awareness, students can analyze information or news, so they can sift essential information, including information that they wish to redistribute. This research used a mixed method. The data was collected with a focus group discussion and propaganda test to students of State Madrasah Aliyah (MAN) in the Yogyakarta Special Province. The result of the propaganda test before the simulation showed the strong influence of the media on student attitudes. After simulation and retesting, the effect decreased significantly. Propaganda awareness can be a provision for students to be more alert in filtering information from social media that contain radicalism.
