Abstract

This study aims to empirically examine the auditor choice in family firms. The study investigates the relationship between family firms, family ownership, and the family identity of the CEO with auditor choice. The research sample consists of 931 firm-year observations non-financial listed companies on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2015- 2021. A company is considered to use a high-quality auditor if it is audited by one of the BIG 4 Firms. Logistic regression analysis results indicate that family firms are less likely to hire high-quality auditors compared to non-family firms. Besides, the percentage of family ownership is negatively related to auditor choice, where companies with higher family ownership less likely to hire high-quality auditors. In terms of the family identity of the CEO, companies with a descendant CEO are less likely to hire high-quality auditors. However, the presence of a founding family CEO and a professional CEO is not related to auditor choice.

Abstract

This study aims to understand how traditional small retail businesses in Italy compete with large modern retail businesses. This study is a qualitative case study and utilized direct observation for 145 hours in three regions in Italy”Pescara, Chieti, and the factory area”and then conducted a thematic analysis of their survival strategy. The study find that the main factor that determines the sustainability of tabaccai (a traditional small retail in Italy) is the support of the local government, which is strengthened by the local society and the ability of the owners to adapt to the environment. Government support in the form of providing access to limited public goods is an important element in the survival of traditional small retail. These empirical findings provide a new recommendation for traditional small retail businesses in developed countries on how to survive amid the growth of large modern retail businesses.

Abstract

This study aims to fill some fundamental research gaps by examining a model of the chain effect of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on a firm's ability to survive during a pandemic. With the help of research assistants, the team collected data from five districts in the Lombok Island, Indonesia. Data were collected from purposively selected small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that were established before the pandemic and were able to get through it. The findings provided some interesting understandings. First, EO does not directly strengthen knowledge assets (KAs). However, in difficult situations, EO becomes the foundation for redirecting and redesigning internal human resource practices (IHRPs) and relational capability (RC) to strengthen KAs and ensure firm survival. Second, EO prevents firms from failing by being proactive and innovative risk takers in reformulating and energizing internal practices and capabilities to strengthen KAs and survival. Third, survival requires innovativeness, proactiveness and risk taking behavior to quickly and efficiently redesign strategy, capability and assets.

Abstract

Customer-Oriented Boundary-Spanning Behaviour (COBSB) reflects employee's behaviour to connect the organization's services with customers. It plays an important role in determining service quality, in which most of the industry depends on the success of this aspect. This study aims to investigate the factors that influence COBSB, considering the role of proactive personality, role stress, and creativity. There were 160 hotel employees in Surakarta, who participated in the survey by using a purposive sampling, while SEM-PLS was conducted to analyse data. The results showed that proactive personality has a positive effect on employee creativity, which in turn influences COBSB in the dimensions of external representation and internal influence. Furthermore, internal influence has a positive effect on service delivery. In addition, internal influence also mediates the effect of employee creativity on service delivery. The findings also showed the negative effect of role stress in the dimensions of role conflict on employee creativity.
