Abstract

The increasing number of vocational schools has contributed to the rapid expansion of English for Specific Purpose (ESP) in Indonesia. The first stage in developing learning materials for ESP is conducting needs analysis. It refers to activities in collecting information as the basis for academic development of a particular group of students. The aims of this study were to investigate and analyse the needs of students in learning English at Medical Vocational High School (SMK Kesehatan) of Prof. Dr. Moestopo. The data were collected through questionnaires and interview. The result showed that: 1). Students tend to learn English because of their needs to improve language competences than to prepare their professional job in the future, 2). Students need more practices in speaking compared to other language skills, 3). Students need materials that meets their needs, particularly in general and medical vocabulary since most of them have difficulties to understand the meaning of words, 4). The teaching method that suit to the students were based on the materials itself. It can be teachers or students centred learning. This study recommended that students need more extra times to learn English. Besides, teachers should create supportive learning environment to motivate them in study English.

Abstract

Abstract Probing question  as part of basic teaching skills becomes a substantial aspect in teaching learning activities to dig up students’ higher order thinking. This study aimed to investigate the types of probing questions used by English Department practice teachers year 2016 of State University of Jakarta. This study implemented qualitative research which focused on classroom observation. Data of this study were probing question utterances asked by practicesd teacher during teaching learning process. The instrument of this study was classroom observational sheet. The data source of this study were 3 English Department PKM students and students of 3 class in SMP Negeri 97 and SMP Negeri 139. The result of the study is in average all types of probing questions found in three English Department PKM students, however only 1 student employed all types of probing question and prompting probing question is the most frequent used by the practice teachers. The study also showed that probing question used in delivering material section in English teaching-learning process. The study also showed that the students were able to respond probing questions used by practice teacher by think correctly and critically while the teacher probed them with probing questions.    Keywords: Probing Question, Students’ higher order thinking, English classroom, Teaching practice.

Abstract

This article entitled A Discourse Analysis : The Adjacency Pairs Analysis on Talkshow Youtube Presents, has one objective that is to find out the type of conversation aspects found in the conversation. The study focuses on 4 aspects of conversation those are adjacency pairs, topic management, preference organization and turn – taking.             The main data of the research is a script of interview between presenter Kevin O Rourke and a songwriter Taylor Swift. The data were video and script which took place in a studio on September 1st, 2011 and the duration was 30 minutes. This video was downloaded from http://youtube.com/youtube present/taylor swift/. The video was transcribed into the script and found that there were 12 turns. Then it was analyzed based on theory by Paltridge about conversation analysis.             From the data, it was founded that there were 6 adjacency pairs that consisted of 1 pair of greeting - greeting, 4 pairs of assessment – agreement, 4 pairs of question – answer, 1 pair of compliment – acceptance, 1 pair of offering – acceptance and 1 pair of leave taking adjacency pair. 3 topics were found in the conversation, all topics were initiated by the Kevin O Rourke and Taylor Swift only follows.             Beside the adjacency pairs, there are 10 preference organizations in the data. Me wanted to describe the types of preference organization into two parts: those are preferred response and dispreferred response. Me only found 10 preferred responses and there was no dispreferred response founded in the data. Preference organization was founded in the data and consists of: Question - Answer 4 pairs, Assessment - Agreement 4 pairs, greeting – greeting 1 pair, compliment – acceptance 1 pair, offering – acceptance 1 pair and leave taking adjacency pair 1 pair. 12 turns were taken by speakers in the conversation, and each speaker took 6 turns.

Abstract

Environment analysis is one of the important processes in designing curriculum. It aims to examine the situational factors that strongly affect the course and learners. The purpose of this paper is to explain how to execute environment analyses for the early childhood education for the golden age children using 2013 Curriculum in PAUD As-Salam, Colomadu, Karanganyar. This study is a descriptive-qualitative study. The data were collected and analyzed using observation and document method. Based on the observation throughout the constraint in the environment and identified using 2013 Curriculum, the teaching environment could be defined whether the Curriculum 2013 is suitable for PAUD As-Salam or need to be improved. Finally, according to those constraints analysis, there are drawn conclusions regarding the improvement of the curriculum which need to be developed more for the students of PAUD As-Salam.

Abstract

Facebook is considered as an effective Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) form. It is estimated that 2/3rd majority of Pakistani Facebook users are below 24 years old. The users spent around 40 minutes every day on facebook. They are either reading posts or responding by different emojis or comments. The study attempts to weigh the role of Facebook in developing writing skills in the students of English literature. 210 students of literature from four public sector universities participated in this research. A 15 item questionnaire suing a 5 – pint Likert scale was applied to record their observations. All students were invited to write at least one academic paragraph. Later their views, draft and profiles were cross tabulated through a data base to determine the results. The results show that 87% students use Facebook. The users consider Facebook as an opportunity to improve their writing skills. Among those who do not use Facebook around 30% did not participate in paragraph writing. The communication traffic on Facebook is found pertinent, critical and relevant. It was established that Facebook and other social media channels can be useful of distant or e-learning prospects.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating and analyzing  students’ responses towards Drama Performance Course learning process by surveying sixth (6th) semester students of English Department, Universitas Pamulang. The purpose of this study is to get a general description of students’ responses, especially from the students’ point of view who are directly involved in the process. In addition, this study is also expected to provide benefits as an evaluation material for teaching literature and as a reference for continuing practicum-based courses namely Drama Performance. Qualitative research design is employed concerning to the learning process of Drama Performance Course. The data were collected by using observation, questionnaire and documentation. As many as 94 respondents in this study were taken from seven classes of the sixth semester students. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that the response of students towards the learning process were positive which taken from 5 categories, namely: the response to the Drama Performance course, the students’ response to the learning process, the process of role deepening, increasing speaking skills,  students interaction and the role of the lecturer. Indeed, the students’ creativity in drama production,  as well as their performances and staging actions were also ran successful.

Abstract

The study was conducted to improve the students’ reading comprehension in comprehending descriptive text at SMP N 2 Pariaman. The research was carried out due to the low learning outcomes in comprehending reading descriptive text, so creative learning technique that can improve learning outcomes is absolutely needed. Adapted monopoly game was chosen to improve the students’ reading comprehension. This research was classroom action research with two cycles. Each cycle consist four components; they were planning, action, observation and reflection. This research was conducted in class VIII 1 SMPN  2 Pariaman. The class consisted of 37 students. The reason of choosing this class because from the observation in reading activity especially in comprehending descriptive text the students had low ability in reading  comprehension. The data were collected through the test and observation sheet. Students’ average score at pre test is 5,3,  after using adapted monopoly game at first cycle, it increased into 5,3. Then, after cycles it increased into 7,08. The adapted monopoly game was seen effectively improving students’ reading comprehension in comprehending descriptive text at SMP N 2 Pariaman.

Abstract

Improving the quality of education is one important point planned by Indonesian government. In order to achieve the good quality of education, Indonesian educational system has set the goal to be achieved; as written in Indonesian constitution number 20, year 2003. To achieve the national educational goals set by Indonesian government, curriculum should be arranged and formulated strategically into certain programs. In the process of developing a language curriculum, needs analysis take a big part in setting the result to be achieved by the learners. Needs analysis in language curriculum development is defined as the process of determining the needs for which a learner or group of learners requires a language and arranging the needs according to priorities. Needs analysis is normally required before syllabus can be developed for language teaching. The study attempts to investigate the role of needs analysis in a language curriculum design and materials development. It will also discuss about managing the needs analysis in classrooms and procedures for conducting needs analysis.

Abstract

This study describes the use of Facebook for educational purposes among female students. The study focuses on two main objectives. First, the study reveals the causes to use Facebook as educational platform. Second, the study depicts the learning activities which female students did with Facebook. To explore the findings, the study gathered the data from survey among twenty-one female students of Bina Nusantara University who were selected randomly. They were asked to complete the closed-ended Likert-scale questionnaires. Then, the data were quantified and analyzed descriptively. The results show that the main reason of female students to use Facebook for learning was its ease accessibility from anywhere with the respondents’ personal gadget. Finally, the research proved that female students were extremely used Facebook to post the writing assignments like stories and essays. Overall, the study significantly conveys the worth usages of social networking sites as Facebook for educational purposes.

Abstract

English grows fast in Southeast Asia due to the importance of it as the language of modernization and international communication. Thailand and Indonesia are both located in Southeast Asia with their own national language, Thai and Bahasa Indonesia and thus English in both countries functions as a foreign language. This research tries to reveal English in higher education context by focusing on university students’ perception on English. The respondents of this research are the student of Jenderal Soedirman University and Burapha University It investigated 120 students consisting 30 male Indonesia students, 30 female Indonesia students, 30 male Thailand students, and 30 female Thailand students. Several aspects are investigated to capture students’ perception based on the following aspects (1) students perception on English as a compulsory subject, (2) students’ preference on their English teacher, (3) English hour in university, (4) the level of difficulties of English features, and (5) students’ preferable ways to improve their English.
