Abstract

Tobacco farmers in Temanggung Regency, the largest and best tobacco producing region in Central Java, still have low incomes. However, local farmers still cultivating tobacco and believed that tobacco is a "tanaman wali" that brings blessings to farmers, so ritual practices similar to ngalap berkah are carried out to gain good luck when harvesting tobacco. This research aims to dissect the cultural factors that influence the economic behavior of Temanggung tobacco farmers and their perceptions regarding welfare. This research method is ethnography with the help of a historical perspective. Data was obtained from field observations and in-depth interviews, welfare data archives at social services, BPS data archives, and scientific literature. Data analysis was carried out using a process of verification, reduction, interpretation and triangulation. The research results show that historical factors in the form of farmers' debt bondage with Chinese middlemen, which are mystified in tobacco myths, are the reason why farmers find it difficult to switch to other commodities. Belief in these myths also creates a perception of prosperity that is inverted from the reality of the tobacco economy, but fosters other sources of welfare that are subjective with three dimensions including harmony, social relations and the environment. Keywords. tobacco farmers, subjective-well being, contradiction, ngalap berkah, Temanggung.

Abstract

The process of empowerment through the collection of charitable resources for individuals with disabilities is predominantly associated with economic factors. Nonetheless, the distribution of zakat plays a pivotal role for beneficiaries (mustaḥiqq), emphasizing inclusive models rather than productive approaches. To explore these dynamics, the researchers conducted fieldwork in Rowosari Village, Semarang City, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with representatives from relevant institutions and disability advocacy groups, employing a phenomenological analytical framework. The findings reveal that zakat institutions, such as Darut Tahuhid Peduli, have implemented the Indonesia Peduli Difabel initiative, which focuses on sustainable economic empowerment, entrepreneurial training, and community integration. These programs have demonstrated success in planning, assessment, distribution, assistance, and evaluation. Consequently, a bottom-up model for empowering individuals with disabilities has emerged, facilitating the development of pertinent business models, such as catfish farming, through the verification of beneficiaries’ eligibility and the execution of feasibility studies. The initiatives are effectively utilizing allocated zakat funds in aquaculture and financial management. Continuous support is provided to assist individuals with disabilities in both economic and personal development. This research not only addresses material considerations but also incorporates social and spiritual dimensions as mechanisms for empowerment that positively influence personal well-being. Thus, this article contributes to the advancement of knowledge regarding welfare provision discourses, aligning with additional elements that enhance empowerment studies.

A critical aspect of addressing this issue pertains to the integration of local assets into community empowerment initiatives. Consequently, this study seeks to investigate the tourism potential of Desa Sekura by employing an ethnography-based model of community empowerment that incorporates local assets. Utilizing an ethnographic methodology, this research examines the ways in which cultural traditions, social capital, and natural resources in Desa Sekura, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, can be leveraged to promote sustainable tourism development. The findings suggest that principles of social inclusion, community participation, and locally-based management can enhance the tourism potential of Desa Sekura while preserving its cultural identity. Furthermore, the evolution of local institutions in the management and utilization of cultural and social assets is effectively illustrated as a means of fostering tourism village potential. This study aims to contribute new perspectives on the development of tourism villages that emphasize local community empowerment and the preservation of cultural heritage as essential components of sustainable economic development.
