Abstract

In analyzing utterances there are some branches of pragmatics that we can used, one of them is speech act. Speech act is language cover an action. Speech act divided into 3 levels; locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. This research tells about illocutionary act especially expressive act. Expressive act is what the speaker feels about state of affair in sincerity condition and the social relationship between speaker and the hearer in society is social function. Research questions of this study were: (1) what are the types of expressive speech acts as found on La La Land movie, (2) What are the social functions of expressive speech acts as found on Lala Land movie. The researcher used qualitative approach. The researcher was used Lala Land transcript as a media to collect the data. The data of this research are the utterances containing expressive speech act taken from the conversation between characters in the La la Land movie. The researcher used content analysis, the data are in the form of the script of Lala Land dialogue. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Searle (1976) and Norrick’s (1978) theories. The result of this showed that there are 35 utterances consist of expressive speech act. Abstract

The application of politeness can be found in daily life through behavior of deeds and words, it also can describes in a public service advertisement. The purpose of this research is to determine and explaine the types and markers of politeness depicted in Public Service Advertisement in Pekanbaru. This research is done chronologically based on three steps, they are; collecting of the data, analysis of the data and presenting the result analysis that is guided by methods and various techniques of language analysis. The data are collecting by observational method. Tap technique is used as the basic technique. In observing the data, pictures of the data are documented by using camera tool of observation. Besides, note-talking technique is also used in documenting the data. Data collected then is analyzed by using pragmatic identity method. The result of the analysis then is presented by using informal method. From the results of analysis, there found eights types of politeness that are applied in Public Service Advertisement in Pekanbaru. Related to politeness markers used in Public Service Advertisement in Pekanbaru there found three politeness markers. Those three are; mari, ayo and –lah.Keywords:          Types and markers, politeness depicted, public services, advertisement.

Abstract

This study is concerned with Information Communication and Technologies (ICTs) and Group Discussion (GD) that become one of the most effective solutions to the problem. Universitas Bumigora has numerous students in one class in which each class consists of approximately 50-60 students. The aims of this study are to identify students’ perspectives on GD and ICTs and to compare men's and women’s perspectives on GD and ICTs in large classes. This study was conducted in two big classes. The instrument in this research was a questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to get information about the students’ responses to the application of FGD and ICTs in teaching and learning English and to identify the differences responses between man and women group. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. This study was conducted in two big classes. The instrument in this research was a questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to get information aboutthe students’ responses to the application of FGD and ICTs in teaching and learning English. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Based on the results, the students believed that group discussion and ICTs belong to “very good” and “good” with range score 3.11-3.44.

Abstract

: Writing is the highest level in mastering of language after listening, speaking, and reading. It is unnatural act which is difficult, but it can be learned through practice continuously and intensively. In real condition, students have problem with writing, they were not comprehensible because the content of the composition was not relevant to the topic, the ideas were not clearly stated, the ideas and sentences were not well organized. The aim of this research is to find out the ability of the third semester students of English Department of STKIP YPM in writing a narrative paragraph. This research was descriptive quantitative method. It was done to find out the students’ ability in writing narrative paragraph. It was used in this research because in descriptive research the researcher has been described the events and indications. Meanwhile, quantitative approach was used to give the numeric in analyzing the data, give the table, and calculate the students’ numbers or points. Population of this research was the third semester students English Department of STKIP YPM Bangko. The researcher used total sampling in taking the sample because the total of population was 28 students. The instrument used to collect data in this research was written test. Based on the research finding and data analysis, it can be concluded that students’ ability in writing narrative paragraph. Based on the research finding and data analysis, it can be concluded that students’ ability in writing narrative paragraph, A was 2 students, A- was 4 students, B+ was 3 students,  C+ was 8 students, C was 6 students, C- was 5 students. From the data above, 19 students had low score in qualification C+, C, and C-. Based on the table above, it can be seen the percentage of the students. It just 32 % students who got high score, but 68% students who got low score. It means that the higher of of percentage of the students’ ability who did not understand in writing narrative paragraph.

Abstract

Abstract: English Grammar is the rules how to make a sentence in learning English. English Grammar is the important part in English, but learning Grammar is not easy especially for student Senior High School. It is because grammar has many formulas to be memorized. There are various ways in learning English that can help the students in learning English Grammar. One of the most popular and effective ways is by using games. There are many types of games that can be used as learning method and media, either electronic or conventional. One of the games is Ludo Word Game. In this study, the research question was “Is there a Ludo Word Game to learn grammar for senior high school students?.  The objective of this study was to make a Ludo Word to learn grammar for senior high school students. The method of the study used was descriptive research. The result of this study was a set of Ludo Word Game that was modified with question cards. In addition, this game can help the students in learning English and can be a medium for the teacher in teaching English especially grammar. Keywords: Grammar, Game, Ludo Word Game

Abstract

Abstract: learning English cannot be separated from learning grammar. In grammar the students learn about many things, such as sentence patterns and the combination of words and phrases. Most students faced difficulty in applying correct grammar. This study aimed to find out the students ability in selecting correct verb forms.This research was a descriptive research. This study showed that the level of students ability was at mediocre level. It was at 50.10. It also showed that the highest score obtained by the students was 75. Meanwhile, the lowest score was 32.5. The average score The error commonly occured in selecting correct “infinitive” to complete the sentences.

Abstract

Abstract: This study tries to find out what factors causing students’ fear of English public speaking and what methods could help them to conquer it effectively. This is a descriptive qualitative study where the data for the research were collected through a self-administered questionnaire distributed to all students of the sixth semester at English Study Program of State Polytechnic of Bengkalis – Riau.  The questionnaire was set based on relevant literature review and also focused on condition of the students based on daily observation done by the researcher during his several years of teaching Public Speaking subject to the students. After collecting the data, the researcher sorted the data by summarizing and choosing the specific category, displaying and verifying the data analysis and making the conclusion from the finding data. The result of this study reveals the factors that caused the fear of English public speaking facing by the students and the methods that could help the students most effectively to conquer their fear of English public speaking.

Abstract

As a phenomenon that many students are not so interested in the subject of English. One of the causes is lack of supporting media used by teachers to support the learning process. Students get bored in learning process because some teachers are book-minded. This project deals with The Making of Guess Me Game Challenge to Learn Vocabulary for Junior High School students. The formulation of the problem is how to make Guess Me Game Challenge. The study belongs to descriptive research. The purpose of this study is to make Guess Me Game Challenge to help student in learning vocabulary. There are two components in this game; they are self-made and expert-made components. The conclusions made after the making process of this game are the making processes of Guess Me Game Challenge. Abstract

Abstract : the role of mass media is crucial today. It is used to introduce, inform, and also to promote products, services, and also entertain people. Business English Study Program is one of study programs in Bengkalis which is still limited in media use. As a result, a little information that public knows about it. Therefore, the use of mass media in English that can be read by larger target audience to introduce, inform, and promote it, its achievement and students activities is crucially needed. In this study, tabloid was chosen as media to fulfill those functions for English department. The name of the tabloid designed  is “The Best” (Business English Study Program Tabloid). It contains Business English Study Program profile, student and alumni’s Profile, Students’ Activity, Business Info, and Study Tips. It was created by using CorelDraw Graphic Suit X5.  This tabloid is expected to be a media of promotion for Business English Study Program and be a creativity media for students. Abstract

Abstract: Mastering English vocabulary is essential in this competitive world. By mastering English vocabulary, students can learn English and comunicate with people. However, there are still many of the students cannot learn English Vocabulary well. They still face difficulties for example, in learning simple daily words. This situation, make students feel bored and lose their interest in learning English. Therefore, the use of learning media are needed to attract these learners attention and interest to learn English in more effective and interesting way. Besides, media can be used to learn English anywhere and anytime outside the school. Related to this research, the main purpose of this project is to make Smart Towels which can be used as an alternative self-learning medium in learning English Vocabulary. This project resulted Smart Towels consists of various themes suitable for Elementary School Students. These towels are modified from ordinary towels that is modified to make it look more interesting. These media can be used in and outside classes during learning-teaching process or spare time. By using this media, the students can be atttracted to learn and increase their ability in English vocabulary interestingly and effectively Keywords: Smart Towels ,learning, Vocabulary.
