Abstract

Abstract: Reading as one of the language skills needs to be developed at various levels of education so that students are able to understand the contents of the reading well, especially texts that use the English language. This study aims to discuss one way to solve students’ problem in reading descriptive text which is by using text-related picture. The text used is descriptive text. In this activity, the teacher shows the picture that is related to the text that will be given. The teacher asks the students about the pictures and brainstorms their knowledge about the picture. Therefore, it is expected to the English teachers to be able to develop the students' reading skill by using the right strategy so that the students can understand the English reading texts quickly and easily. Through this image media teachers can guide students to the text to be learned. Finally the authors hope this paper can be useful for English teachers as an alternative strategy applied in teaching reading.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the needs in the process of learning English and to know the specific information about content and material needed by math students. This research is descriptive qualitative and conducted in the third semester of the Mathematics Education Department of STKIP Muhammadiyah Pringsewu Lampung. It was qualitative descriptive research by collecting data from interviews and documentation. The results show that English is important for professional needs because it is needed in all fields. In addition, speaking and grammar are difficult aspects for students. The basic laws of mathematics as materials are needed the most.

Abstract

Abstract : Rupat Island, part of Bengkalis Regency of Riau Province has many interesting tourism objects and attractions. For many years, North Rupat has become tourism destination for tourists, especially the domestic tourists. Lack of creative promotion makes North Rupat known only by the domestic tourists. Therefore, creative promotional items such as a profile book which is written in English is needed to promote North Rupat to international tourists. This study is about making a profile book about tourism objects and attractions in North Rupat. The profile book is made by using Photoshop CS3 program. It describes some of tourism objects including Natural Tourism, Cultural Tourism and Man-made Tourism. The profile book consists of eighteen pages with pictures and description text in dual language; English and Bahasa. The profile book is expected to be able to help the government of Bengkalis Regency to promote the tourism objects in North Rupat both for domestic and international tourists. Keywords: Tourism Object, Profile Book

Abstract

Abstract: Malay story “Yong Dollah” is one of cultural heritage in the form of oral literature in Bengkalis. This story has been very popular and often been told to children, teenagers or even adults in certain occasion like at night or free time. It has been told throughout generations in the life of Malay people in Bengkalis. Yong Dollah is a character created by a man named Abdullah bin Endong, Bengkalis Malay artist. In his entire life, he liked to tell stories that mostly came from his imagination to entertain people. The contents of his stories were often related to his daily life, adventure and often contained certain moral value for audience. The popularity of the stories could be used as learning resource text and media to teach English for senior high school students. However, English version of these stories had never been made before. The exploration and translation of the original stories into English were done to meet the need of learning. Method of translating used in this study was adaptation where intercultural differences between original text from source language (Bahasa Melayu) and target language (English) were adjusted to convey the original meaning from the content of the language. Results of the translation were set of translated stories of Yong Dollah. These Stories can be used by teacher in teaching English for senior high school students. Abstract

This study aimed tofind out to what extent the use of communicative approach in the teaching of english as a foreign language by teachers of senior high schools in Bengkalis. This study was done to see the phenomenon of lack of communication skill in English at the number of senior high school graduation. It might be caused of inappropriate approach applied at senior high school. This study found that most teachers strongly agreed that their role is as a facilitator. Furthermore, most teachers indicated that their class is more student centered than teacher- centered, the teacher is just as a facilitator in the classroom. This study could be used as empirical data for further research and as a review for the stockholders in making decision. Finally, this study could contribute to improve the senior high school graduation ability in English.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to describe the learning atmosphere during the implementation of “Fix the Mistake Game Book”. Besides, the research was also designed to know how the improvement of the students’ grammar during the implementation of “Fix the Mistake Game Book”. This research was a classroom action research. The research was carried out in first year students of MTSM Penyasawan. This research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of action research, i.e. planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The results of the research showed that the learning atmosphere also improved. The class became more enthusiastic and feel comfort. Furthermore, Fix The Mistake Game Book was able to improve the students’ grammar mastery. It was proven by the increase of the students’ mean score from 41.34 in pre-test to 47.83 in cycle 1, and 49.84 in cycle 2, although the results of the research were just a little bit improvement. It could be concluded that the use of Fix the Mistake Game Book has proven to be an effective way in teaching-learning of grammar on first year of MTSM Penyasawan.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to find out the effect of using Spelling Bee game on students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using this game. Simple random sampling was used to determine the sample where 20 students in controlled class and 20 students in experimental class. There were three formulations of the problem: a) How is the students’ vocabulary mastery before being taught by using spelling bee game. b) How is the students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by using spelling bee game. c) Is there any significant effect by using spelling bee game on students’ vocabulary mastery of the seventh grade at SMPN I Bantan. Based on the result of the test mean score of experimental class was 83, controlled was 67, 5 and ttestwas 6, 18. It showed that ttest is higher than ttablein 1% and 5%(2.02 ≤ 6, 18 ≥ 2.69).  It meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. On the other hand, Spelling Bee Game was effective to increase the students’ vocabulary mastery of the seventh grade at SMPN I Bantan.

Abstract

Abstract: The purposes of the research are to (1) introduce the method of  “The Tense Key Matching” which is used to create English sentences easily to the Class X students of MAS Nurul Falah, Airmolek, INHU, Riau, (2) find out if “The Key Tense Matching” is usable to be applied in Class X of MAS Nurul Falah, Airmolek, INHU, Riau to help the students face difficulties in creating English sentences so that they can master the four language skills in the future, and (3) know if the effectiveness of “The Key Tense Matching” to the students’ability in creating English sentences will give the effect on their English learning outcomes or not. This is a quasi experimental research which uses the pre-test and post-test design. The sample consist of two group: experimental class (given treatment of the tense key matching method) and controlled class (taught through conventional method). The subject of the research is the Class X students of MAs Nurul Falah Airmolek. The data is gathered through the techinqes of observation, test, documentation, and interview. Ttest  is used to analysed the data. The result of the test shows that the tense key matching method is more effective than he conventional  method when it is applied in teaching English grammar (t = 8.547 and p ˂ 0.000).

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of the research was to describe the learning atmosphere during the implementation of “Talking Chips” (TC) technique in Speaking skill. Besides, the research was also designed to know how the improvement of the students’ Speaking skill during the implementation of “Talking Chips” (TC) technique. This research was a classroom action research. The research was carried out in second semester students of English Study Program at STAIN Bengkalis. This research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of action research, i.e. planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, interview, questionnaire, and test. The lecturer was the researcher assisted by collaborator as observer. The interview and questionnnaire were given to the students before and after the implementation of Talking Chips (TC). The tests were in the form of pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2. The data were analized qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative data were analized using Interactive Model of Data Analysis as propounded by Matthew M. Miles and A.M. Huberman. The results of the research showed that the learning atmosphere also improved. The class became more confident, fun and enjoyable. Furthermore, Talking Chips (TC) Technique was able to improve the students’ Speaking Skill. It was proven by the increase of the students’ mean score from 40.84 in pre-test to 45.92 in cycle 1, and 49.61 in cycle 2, although the results of the research were just a little bit improvement. It could be concluded that the use of Talking Chips has proven to be an effective way in teaching-learning of Speaking Skill on Second Semester of English Study Program at STAIN Bengkalis.  Keyword: Speaking Skill, Talking Chips (TC) Technique

Abstract

Speaking skills has become the major priority to be taught between the four skills since communicative approach communication has been influenced in foreign language learning. Random Picture game is one of communicative technique that can motivate students in speaking English. This study aimed to find out the effect of using Random Picture Game toward students’ speaking ability at the second semester students of Business English Study Program. This research used experimental research design. It was conducted at State Polytechnic of Bengkalis. The design of this research was pre-experimental design with one group pretest and posttest. The population of this research was the second semester students with the total population was 20. The sample was taken by saturation sampling. This technique included all members of the population as the sample of the study. 20 students was the sample of this research. The result of this research was students who were taught by using random picture game had a significant effect toward speaking ability. In conclusion, random picture game can be used as a teaching technique in teaching speaking. For further researchers, this technique can be applied by English lecturers to other skills.  Keywords: Speaking ability, random picture game, pre experimental design
