Abstract

Banana peel contains fructooligosaccharide (FOS), which is useful as a prebiotic for the intestinal microflora of livestock, but easily rots. Banana peels were processed into silage with the addition of Javanese turmeric as a feed additive derived from herbal plants within 21 days of the ensilage process. The effect of Javanese turmeric addition on kepok banana peel silage was determined by its physicochemical characteristics. The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 replications consisted of P0 (0% javanese turmeric + 4% EM4 + 6% molasses), P1 (1.5% javanese turmeric + 4% EM4 + 6% molasses), P2 (3% javanese turmeric + 4% EM4 + 6% molasses) and P3 (4.5% javanese turmeric + 4% EM4 + 6% molasses). The parameters observed were physical quality, fermentation quality, nutritional content, and water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC). The results showed that the addition of Javanese had no effect on the physical quality parameters and no significant effect on the fermentation quality, nutrient content, and water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) in the kepok banana peel silage compared to the control treatment. It can be concluded that the addition of javanese turmeric to kepok banana peel silage does not alter its physical quality, fermentation quality, nutrient content, and water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC).

Abstract

This study evaluated the safety of binahong leaves (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Stennis) as a potential rumen feed additive through microbiological observations and in vitro fermentation characteristics. Microbiological testing used binahong leaf infusion extract with levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, then measured total bacterial and protozoal populations. In vitro experiment used a Randomized Block Design with seven ration treatments and three groups of rumen fluid collection times, with control ration (60% Forage: 40% Concentrate), and suplementation binahong leaf 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, 12.5%, and 15%. In vitro parameters include fermentability (total N–NH₃ and VFA, microbial protein synthesis, and digestibility (dry matter and organic matter). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by orthogonal polynomial tests. The results showed that binahong leaf infusion extract up to 20% caused a linear reduction in total bacterial and protozoal populations but remained within normal ranges. The use of binahong leaf powder (TSB) in the ration of more than 7.5% resulted in a decrease in all in vitro variables to abnormal levels. In conclusion, binahong leaves are safe for rumen microbial activity when applied as an infusion extract up to 20%, whereas their use as leaf powder in dairy cattle rations should be limited to 7.5% to maintain normal fermentation, microbial protein synthesis, and in vitro digestibility.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the addition of butterfly pea flower extract as a natural antioxidant source in Skim Milk with Egg Yolk on the quality of Boer goat spermatozoa. The study used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with five treatments and four replicates, and the data were further analyzed using Duncan's test. The treatments consisted of sperm added to skim milk (control, P0) and to skim milk with egg yolk, with the addition of butterfly pea flower extract at various doses (P1 = 2 mL, P2 = 4 mL, P3 = 6 mL, P4 = 8 mL). The parameters observed were motility, viability, abnormality, and intact plasma membrane. The results showed that the addition of butterfly pea flower extract had a significant effect (p<0.05) on all parameters observed. Increasing the treatment dose produced a consistent biological response, with treatment P4 (8 mL) being the best treatment. Based on the results, the antioxidant content of butterfly pea flower extract protected the membrane and structure of spermatozoa from oxidative damage during storage. The study concluded that the addition of butterfly pea flower extract has the potential to be used as a supplement in semen diluents to improve the stability and quality of Boer goat semen.

Abstract

The current global challenge in the feed industry is to produce products that are both natural and functional. One potential natural ingredient is Marigold (Tagetes erecta). Marigold is rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, natural pigments and antioxidants with health benefits, and can be applied to increasing egg production in laying hens. This study aims to evaluate the effect of Marigold flower extract supplementation on egg weight, egg component weight, and yolk color in laying hens. The study was conducted experimentally using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments: without marigold extract (P0), 0.1 g kg-1 ration (P1), 0.2 g kg-1 ration (P2), and 0.3 g kg-1 ration (P3), each replicated five times with five hens per replication. The feed used was a commercial feed. Observed variables included egg weight, shell weight, albumen weight, yolk weight, and yolk color. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and if significant differences were found, followed by the LSD test. The results showed that Marigold extract supplementation had no significant effect on egg weight, shell weight, albumen weight, and yolk weight, but significantly increased (p<0.05) yolk color scores. Thus, it can be concluded that Marigold flower extracts play a greater role in improving the visual quality of egg yolks by increasing color intensity while enriching carotenoid content, which potentially increases the functional value of eggs as a healthy food.

Abstract

The extension of laying hens’ productive lifespan up to 100 weeks is associated with a decline in egg physical quality during the late laying phase due to reduced magnum gland function and impaired liver health, leading to albumen thinning and weakening of the vitelline membrane, which may result in failure to meet SNI 3926:2023 standards. This study aimed to determine the optimal crude protein (CP) level in an isocaloric diet to maintain the stability of egg physical quality in ISA Brown laying hens during the late laying phase. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was applied using 100 ISA Brown hens aged 72 weeks, assigned to four dietary protein levels: P1 (16%), P2 (17%), P3 (18%), and P4 (19%) with metabolizable energy of 2650 kcal/kg. Parameters measured included Albumen Index (AI), Haugh Unit (HU), Yolk Index (YI), and eggshell thickness (EST). The results showed that increasing crude protein levels improved AI, HU, and YI, with the highest values observed in P4 (19% CP), resulting in HU (95.96), AI (0.14), and YI (0.47), classifying eggs as Grade I according to SNI 3926:2023. In contrast, a metabolic dip indicating inefficiency was observed at 18% CP (P3), reflected by decreased internal egg quality. Eggshell thickness remained relatively stable across treatments and was categorized as medium shells. In conclusion, a crude protein level of 19% is the most effective formulation for maintaining the stability of egg physical quality in ISA Brown hens during the late laying phase.

Abstract

Optimizing the physiological status of lactating dairy cows is greatly influenced by feed quality, particularly the availability of adequate protein and minerals to support systemic functions. This study was conducted to evaluate the erythrocyte response of lactating Peranakan Friesian Holstein (PFH) dairy cows supplemented with lamtoro leaves (Leucaena leucocephala). Twelve lactating PFH dairy cows, aged 3–4 years, in the 4th to 8th month of lactation, and with an average body weight of 450 kg, were placed in a Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of two treatments and six blocks. The diet consisted of a 40:60 ratio of forage to concentrate, with the concentrate comprising rice bran, coconut meal, coffee husks, wheat flour, vitamins, minerals, and soybean meal. Lamtoro leaf supplementation was 10% for P0 and 20% for P1 based on the dry matter of the forage. Blood samples were collected via the jugular vein for analysis of hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell count (RBC), hematocrit (Hct), and indices including Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH), and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC). Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Duncan’s test. The results showed that the addition of lamtoro had a significant effect (p<0.05) on MCV, MCH, and MCHC, while hemoglobin and red blood cell count showed a positive upward trend. MCV (p<0.01) increased significantly from 39.90 fL in P0 to 47.8 fL in P1. MCH also increased from 11.54 pg to 12.31 pg. MCHC increased from 29.94% to 33.73% (p<0.05), indicating better hemoglobin saturation. RDW remained stable at 33.62% and 33.81%, reflecting uniform erythropoiesis. The conclusion of this study is that lamtoro supplementation up to 20% improves several erythrocyte indices, indicating improved erythrocyte characteristics in lactating dairy cows.

Abstract

The use of additives plays a crucial role in providing energy sources for microorganisms during the ensiling process, enabling optimal physical quality of silage to be formed. Avocado seed meal (ASM) provides gradually released energy to support fermentative activity, while expired commercial syrup (ECS) contains easily degradable sugars that accelerate lactic acid production. The synergy between these two helps the preservation process occur more rapidly, allowing silage to reach stable conditions and exhibit better physical characteristics. This study was designed to evaluate the influence of these two materials in fattening sheep concentrate formulations, with a focus on changes in physical characteristics and acidity levels as benchmarks of fermentation success. The research was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design with five treatments and five replications, where ASM and ECS were administered at levels of 1.50%, 3%, 4.50%, and 6.00% of dry matter, while the base treatment without additives served as the control. The observed variables included silage aroma, texture, and color characteristics, as well as dry matter content, dry matter loss, pH value, and Fleigh Value as indicators of fermentation stability. The obtained data were analyzed using analysis of variance, followed by DMRT test at a 1% significance level. The research findings demonstrated that the combination of ASM and ECS had a highly significant effect (p<0.01) on the aroma, texture, color, pH, and Fleigh Value of fattening sheep concentrate silage, except that dry matter content and dry matter loss were not affected by the two additives. Treatment P5 (addition of ASM and ECS at 6% DM) emerged as the most superior treatment, characterized by strong fermentative aroma (3.32±0.06), smoother texture without clumping (3.49±0.07), more consistent yellowish-brown color (3.47±0.05), lower pH (4.31±0.07), and the highest Fleigh Value (98.9±1.05) as an indication of superior fermentation quality. In conclusion, the combination of avocado seed meal and expired commercial syrup at a dose of 6% of dry matter (3% ASM + 3% ECS) is recommended as an effective local additive to improve the physical quality and fermentation stability of fattening sheep concentrate silage.
