Abstract

Kefir is a fermented milk product made by inoculating milk with kefir grains, a combination of bacteria and yeast. These microorganisms will play a role in the fermentation of lactic acid and alcohol, which can provide a therapeutic effect. The presence of probiotics in feed can increase enzymatic and digestive activity. As a natural probiotic, Kefir contains various strains of bacteria and yeast that can be used as a substitute for antibiotics that are limited in their use nowadays. The effectiveness of kefir as a probiotic was studied on the production, feed efficiency, and relative weight of the digestive tract in broiler chickens. This study used DOC broiler strain MB 202 with as many as 200 unsexing using a completely random design with four treatments and five replicates for five weeks. Treatment consisted of T0 = basal ration (control), T1 = basal ration + 1.5% probiotic kefir, T2 = basal ration + 3% probiotic kefir, T3 = basal ration+ 4.5% probiotic kefir. The kefir used comes from goat's milk which was given as much as 10% grain kefir fermented for 48 hours. The ANOVA resulted from a real difference (P<0.05) in performance for each treatment compared to the control. At the same time, the intestinal weight parameters of the digestive tract did not show a real difference (P>0.05). The addition of 4.5% probiotic kefir showed the best results on four performance parameters, including consumption, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio, which is also supported by the highest carcass yield compared to other treatments.

Abstract

Mung bean sprout husk is waste with promising nutritive value (crude protein 14%, Total Digestible Nutrients 64.58%, moisture 63.35%) and, due to its high moisture, is suitable for processing via feed-wafer technology. This study aimed to evaluate the physical quality and identify the best storage duration of complete wafers formulated with mung bean sprout husk. A completely randomized design with four treatment levels (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%) and three replicates was used. Organoleptic traits were described descriptively, while physical traits density, water absorption, impact resistance, and wafer durability index (WDI) were analyzed by one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (α = 0.05). Supplementation of mung bean sprout husk significantly affected density and water absorption (P < 0.05), with the 30% treatment achieving the highest density (0.57 g·cm⁻³) and water absorption (83.0%), both superior to the control (P < 0.05). In contrast, impact resistance (99.1%) and WDI (85.8%) did not differ among treatments (P > 0.05). Overall, the 30% supplementation delivered the best physical quality and the best storage duration among the tested formulations.

Abstract

Livestock performance is influenced by genetics, the environment, and their interactions. The livestock commonly raised by the community are small ruminants, particularly sheep. Therefore, it is important to provide knowledge and information regarding sheep breeding stock selection. This activity was also based on regional regulations concerning sheep farming in East Kalimantan. The purpose of this program was to educate farmers in North Samarinda District on selecting quality breeding stock, thereby improving their understanding and awareness of good breeding practices. The community service activity (PKM) was conducted at the Community Hall of Lempake Subdistrict, North Samarinda District, Samarinda City. The implementation methods included introductions and opening, delivery of educational materials, and discussion through a question-and-answer session. Through this educational activity, it is expected that farmers will gain better awareness of the importance of breeding stock selection, adapt improved management practices after socialization and training, and increase active involvement from the farming community. Farmers in North Samarinda District became more aware of the importance of breeding stock selection based on SNI (Indonesian National Standard) criteria after attending the educational program at the Lempake Community Hall. Farmers also demonstrated positive behavioral changes in selecting sheep using SNI standards. The impact of education was reflected in improved health, body size, and qualitative traits of sheep, resulting in better performance. In addition, this activity received strong support from farmer associations and related institutions in applying breeding stock selection practices. Conclusion: To improve productivity, proper breeding stock selection and management, along with the application of supporting technologies, are necessary. Thus, sheep farming has the potential to become an important source of household income and help farmers expand their sheep farming businesses.

Abstract

Banana peel contains fructooligosaccharide (FOS), which is useful as a prebiotic for the intestinal microflora of livestock, but easily rots. Banana peels were processed into silage with the addition of Javanese turmeric as a feed additive derived from herbal plants within 21 days of the ensilage process. The effect of Javanese turmeric addition on kepok banana peel silage was determined by its physicochemical characteristics. The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 replications consisted of P0 (0% javanese turmeric + 4% EM4 + 6% molasses), P1 (1.5% javanese turmeric + 4% EM4 + 6% molasses), P2 (3% javanese turmeric + 4% EM4 + 6% molasses) and P3 (4.5% javanese turmeric + 4% EM4 + 6% molasses). The parameters observed were physical quality, fermentation quality, nutritional content, and water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC). The results showed that the addition of Javanese had no effect on the physical quality parameters and no significant effect on the fermentation quality, nutrient content, and water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) in the kepok banana peel silage compared to the control treatment. It can be concluded that the addition of javanese turmeric to kepok banana peel silage does not alter its physical quality, fermentation quality, nutrient content, and water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC).
