Abstract

A green and facile saccharin-catalyzed procedure is developed for the one-pot convenient synthesis of dihydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole, tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyran and pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidinone scaffolds via multi-component tandem Knoevenagel cyclocondensation reaction. This procedure has the chief advantages of green, inexpensive and readily available catalyst, high atom-economy, high to quantitative yields and the reaction procedure is mild and involves facile workup procedure to obtain the desired products in short reaction times.

Abstract

Salicylic acid-modified magnetite (Mag-SA) and gallic acid-modified magnetite (Mag-GA) particles were prepared by co-precipitation procedure. Characterization results showed the interaction that occurs between the surface of magnetite with salicylic acid (Mag-SA) and gallic acid (Mag-GA) was through hydrogen bonding. Adsorption of [AuCl4]– onto Mag-SA and Mag-GA surfaces as a function of initial pH, contact time, and initial concentration of the [AuCl4]– solution were comparatively investigated. Result showed that the optimum adsorption of [AuCl4]– onto Mag-SA or Mag-GA was found at pH 3. The adsorption process were found to allow the pseudo-second order equation, both for Mag-SA and Mag-GA. The parameters in isotherm adsorption equations conformed to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms very well for Mag-GA, but for Mag-SA, only conformed to the Langmuir isotherm very well. The result of this study demonstrate that the ability Mag-GA to adsorb [AuCl4]– higher than Mag-SA.

Abstract

The influence of calcination temperature on the synthesis of zirconia-pillared saponite (PILS) and on its catalytic activity in menthol esterification has been studied. Zirconia pillarization was conducted using zirconium tetraisopropoxide as a precursor and with calcination temperatures of 450, 600 and 700 °C. Evaluation of physicochemical characteristics at these varied temperatures was carried out by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), surface area analysis, Scanning Electron Eicroscope (SEM) analysis, Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and total acidity. The obtained results indicate that the structure and surface acidity of saponite were strongly influenced by calcination temperature. The solid acidity and surface parameters such as specific surface area, pore volume, and pore radius play an important role in the total conversion and selectivity in menthol esterification.

Abstract

In this study, the distribution and source identification of sedimentary PAHs from 13 rivers running through Jakarta City were investigated. Freeze-dried sediment samples were extracted by pressurized fluid extraction and purified by two-step of column chromatography. PAHs were identified and quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). High concentrations of PAHs, ranging from 1992 to 17635 ng/g-dw, were observed at all sampling locations. Ratios of alkylated PAHs to parent PAHs exhibited both petrogenic and pyrogenic signatures with predominantly petrogenic inputs. High hopanne concentrations (4238-40375 ng/g dry sediment) supported the petrogenic input to Jakarta’s rivers. The high concentration of PAHs is indicator for organic micropollutant in the aquatic urban environment in Jakarta that may have the potential to cause adverse effect to the environment.

Abstract

Samama (Anthocephalus macrophyllus) is one of a pioneer indigenous fast growing species in Indonesia which have been used as traditional medicine for various diseases. The objectives were to determine the yield extract, to analyze their antidiabetic activity by inhibition assay for α-glucosidase enzyme activity and chemical analysis with GCMS. Extraction of leaves, bark and wood samples were done by using ethanol 95%. Fractionation the most active  ethanol extract was conducted by using n-hexane and ethyl acetate. The yield of ethanol extracts in leaves, bark and wood were 13.90%, 12.87%, and 2.18% respectively. Based on antidiabetic activity assay, the bark ethanol extract was the most active extract by the IC50 value of 5.86 μg mL-1. Phytochemical analysis on bark ethanol extracts showed that they contained flavonoid, quinon, triterpenoid, saponin and tannin which were assumed have high contribution in antidiabetic activities. The result of fractionation ethanol extract bark showed that the ethyl acetate fraction was the most active fraction (IC50 6.82 μg mL-1). GCMS analysis indicated the presence of dominant phenolic compounds such as pyrocatechol, antiarol, isopropyl myristate and phenol in which were suspected have antidiabetic activity. These results strongly suggested that ethyl acetate fraction of Samama bark was a potential natural source for antidiabetic agents.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the possible use of ion-exchange resin on Dowex AG 50x8 in separating Y-90 from Sr-90 which then could be applied in the basic of manufacture of producing Sr-90/Y-90 generator for the production of radiopharmaceutical cancer therapy. The findings showed that a distributive coefficient of Sr-90 and Y-90 with HCl 6 N solvent showed that distributive coefficient of Sr-90 in cation-exchange resin on Dowex 50x8 was greater than Y-90. Y-90 in HCl 6 N solvent was more easily eluted, while Sr-90 was bound to resin.. In conclusion, resin on Dowex AG 50x8 with HCl 6 N elution solvent might be able to separate Y-90 from Sr-90 as the basis for Sr-90/Y-90 generator.

Abstract

This research aims to calculate energetics parameters, hydrogen bonding, characteristics local hydration, and proton transfer in phosphorylated nata de coco (NDCF) membrane using ab initio method. The minimum energy structure of NDCF membranes and the addition of n water molecules (n = 1-10) determined at the B3LYP/6-311G** level indicates that proton dissociation requires a minimum of four water molecules. Dissociated protons stabilize with the formation of (hydronium, Zundel, Eigen) ions. Calculation of the interaction energy with n water molecules indicates an increasingly negative change in energy (ΔE) and enthalpy (ΔH), and hence an increasingly positive interaction with water molecules. This interaction facilitates the transfer of protons in the membrane matrix. Calculation of the rotational energy at the center of C-O indicates that the pyranose ring structure, with a maximum barrier energies of ~ 12.5 J/mol, is much more flexible than the aromatic backbones of sulfonated poly(phenylene) sulfone (sPSO2) and the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) backbones in perfluorosulfonic acid ionomers (PFSA). These energy calculations provide the basis that the flexibility of the pyranose ring and the hydrogen bonding between water molecules and phosphonate groups influence the transfer of protons in the membrane of NDCF.

Abstract

Ethyl p-methoxycinnamate (EPMC) (1) has been isolated as a major compound from the rhizome of Kaempferia galanga together with the other compound ethyl cinnamate (2). As reported in the literature, EPMC (1) exhibited a significant in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory activity. In this research, we investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of compounds 1 and 2 by using anti-denaturation of heat bovine serum albumin (BSA) method. In order to analyze active sites that are responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity, therefore, it is necessary to conduct structural modification of EPMC (1). The structural modification was performed through re-esterification reaction by using conventional and assistance of the unmodified microwave oven. Evaluation of the results of the bioassay indicated that the ester and methoxy functional groups of EPMC (1) play an important role for the anti-inflammatory activity.

Abstract

Surface morphology of Fe(III)–porphyrin thin layers was studied using atomic force microscopy. The thin layer samples used in these experiments were deposited by spin coating methods on indium–tin-oxide substrates at room temperature under atmospheric conditions. Variations of thin layer of Fe(III)-porphyrin were done by modifying the rotational speed and the concentration of the solution. The experimental results demonstrated that the Fe(III)–porphyrin layers were observed as discrete nanomolecular islands. Both the number of nano-islands and thickness of the layer increased significantly with increasing concentration. A layer thickness of 15 nm was obtained for low concentrations of 0.00153 M and become 25 nm for dense concentrations of 0.153 M. Conversely, the higher number of islands were deposited on the surface of the substrate at a lower rotational speed.

Abstract

Antioxidant activities of Syzygium polyanthum leaves extracts (methanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane and n-hexane) were evaluated by using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2’-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazole-6-sulfonic acid) methods. The methanol extract showed the highest antioxidant activity of DPPH assay among extract with IC50 value of 44.35 mg/mL. In addition, methanol extract also showed the highest antioxidant activity of ABTS assay among extracts with IC50 value of 17.69 mg/mL. This study indicated that the methanol extract of S. polyanthum leaves is potential as antioxidant.
