Abstract

Indonesia is a country rich in culture. In everyday life, people still apply traditions, norms and regional methods that apply in social life. One of the traditions that are still used in everyday life is the Irutan Tradition. A tradition that prioritizes active communication between participants to find solutions to problems experienced by farmers. The aim of this research is to explain the forms of the Irutan Tradition which encapsulate the social solidarity of the rice farming community in farming life as a local resistance in the current global era. This research uses a qualitative research method which describes the research results descriptively and uses a case study approach and uses a purposive sampling technique, namely determining informants based on certain characteristics. The results of this research are that the Irutan Tradition is a solution to farmers' problems when working on their rice fields regarding capital and tools... apart from that, the Irutan Tradition can also be a reinforcement of social solidarity in the Kedungmentawar Village community which has an impact on the emotional attachment of rice farmers so that can achieve a life of harmony and prosperity.

Abstract

Food security is one of the major themes that has received attention from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In Indonesia, one of the government's efforts to achieve food security is to release a subsidized rice program (Program Beras Miskin or Program Raskin) that began in the Monetary Crisis in 1998. Unfortunately, the implementation of this program has always triggered social protests from the beneficiaries of the program. This article aims to analyze the determinants of social protest in the context of implementing a subsidized rice program with logistic regression techniques. Based on the 5th Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) data, this article found seven independent variables can estimate social protest. This model can explain social protest significantly by 0.0515 (5.15%), X2 (7) = 428.32, p <0.01. This article recommends that the government improve the quality of governance at the district/city and village level, formulate public policy that can increase the stock of social capital at the community level, and improve equal access to primary, secondary, and higher education for citizens, to minimize social protest from the citizens.

Abstract

The law of attraction is a concept that some people rely on to realize their desires. The increasingly dynamic nature of modern society has led to the Law of Attraction becoming a strategy in individuals' mindsets, motivations, and behaviours, enabling them to achieve their goals. This concept is related to the self-fulfilling prophecy theory proposed by Robert K. Merton in 1948. He stated that a person's beliefs or expectations can motivate them to act in such a way that those expectations ultimately become reality. This view is also held by Generation X, who are insurance agents. This study examines insurance agents' understanding of the LoA as it is applied in their daily work. This study employed a qualitative method, conducting in-depth interviews with three informants who have worked as insurance agents at Company Z. The informants believe that their various achievements are the result of consistent LoA practice. In addition, LoA has also influenced their way of thinking and has become a mainstay of the informants when carrying out their work. This phenomenon demonstrates that believing in LoA is a rational action. However, the method of implementation is not concrete, as it relies on the influence of the subconscious, which becomes an adaptive strategy when facing life's uncertainties. This finding also shows that, amidst modernization, some individuals remain at the metaphysical stage, believing in abstract concepts such as LoA. This indicates that development towards a positive stage of society is not occurring evenly.

Abstract

Merariq is a unique customary marriage process among the Sasak people, which is through abduction. This tradition has been passed down through generations to the present day. Literature review indicates that merariq publications are more abundant from cultural, legal, and religious perspectives. Some researchers delve into gender studies and tourism, but the perspective of communication sociology is very rare. This article aims to discuss merariq marriage from the standpoint of communication sociology, explicitly analyzing the patterns of communication relationships among individuals involved in merariq.Researchers employ a qualitative approach with a natural observation method, where primary data excavation is through interviews supplemented by a literature review. Researchers engage five key informants, including customary leaders, cultural observers, individuals who have experienced merariq, and civil marriage registry officials. Researchers conclude that merariq is a kidnapping event in the context of a 'drama' aimed at marrying a woman based on cultural norms. The stages of merariq remain unchanged over time, including pre-merariq, merariq execution, negotiation, inauguration, and post-merariq. Courtship in Merariq employs indirect communication patterns facilitated through mediators. Generally, the communication patterns in each stage of merariq vary, but interpersonal communication patterns occur in many stages. In the inauguration stage, communication patterns arise within a group setting, except for the marriage sermon in a public communication setting. Communication patterns in the negotiation stage are the most dynamic and critical to Merariq's success. In Merariq, society places women in a subordinate position, unequal to men, where women tend to be objectified, and men hold more power over women. This imbalanced gender relationship tends to persist to this day.

Abstract

The current Pancasila has been left unclear and with a vague concept. Historically, the formation of the state foundation in 1945 was marked by a debate on Pancasila that centred on ideological values and social representations of the Indonesian people. A need in the scientific realm and government practice to find out how Pancasila is debated ideologically and whether Pancasila can indeed be practised. The writing of this journal employs a qualitative descriptive method, incorporating a literature review to collect data from previous research, public sources, and credible, legitimate information. The results of the data and information that have been checked for validity are then analysed comprehensively and critically. The findings indicate that the concept of Pancasila encompasses a range of values and ideologies, including those from religion/theology, humanism, nationalism, liberalism, and socialism, all of which are intertwined within the concept of Pancasila. In the practice of the old order state, Pancasila could not be operationalised because the newly established state, the New Order, interpreted it manipulatively for the interests of power and during the reform order, Pancasila experienced degradation. However, the Pancasila study institution, namely BPIP, re-emerged, which became an academic arena for the concept of Pancasila and an opportunity for the operationalisation of Pancasila in the context of government and state.

Abstract

This study examines how unmarried Salafi Muslim women navigate religious values in choosing cosmetics in the midst of modernity. The study uses an anthropological approach with in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and cultural artifact analysis. The findings show six main negotiation dimensions: (1) product halalness, (2) appearance in public spaces, (3) use of cosmetics at home and outside the home, (4) interaction with the cosmetics industry, (5) dependence on modern products, and (6) compatibility of cosmetics with worship. This dimension reflects a commitment to sharia while adjusting to social dynamics and modern aesthetics. Salafi Muslim women tend to prefer halal-certified cosmetics that fulfill the principle of tayyib (good and pure) and support the performance of worship. However, they face challenges, such as a lack of industry transparency, limited access to high-quality products, and social pressure to follow beauty trends. This study highlights the importance of collaboration between cosmetics manufacturers and halal certification bodies to improve product quality and transparency. This research provides new insights into the relationship between religion, culture, and consumption behavior, particularly in the context of Salafi Muslim women. Recommendations include quantitative research to expand the generalizability of the results and the development of more inclusive halal cosmetics. These results are relevant for global Muslim consumers and the cosmetics industry looking to respond to the needs of the halal market.

Abstract

The family is the first socialization agent that children get since they are born into the world. The role of the family is very significant in the formation of a child's character. One of them is the role in overcoming drug abuse behavior and free sex among children and adolescents. This study uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological design, exploring the perceptions of children and adolescents towards drug abuse and free sex. The determination of informants is done through purposive sampling, while data sources are obtained from observation, unstructured interviews, documentation, and literature studies. Triangulation of data and theory is used for data validity, by integrating Structural Functionalism theory from Talcott Parsons and conflict theory from Karl Marx in analyzing how the role of family in Pagerwangi Village contributes to preventing drug abuse and free sex behavior in children and adolescents.   Strategic steps including passive observation and unstructured interviews are conducted to create a natural environment and gain in-depth information. The results showed that drug abuse and free sex in children and adolescents in Pagerwangi Village were caused by lack of parental supervision, low communication intensity, and inequality of access to information, so that families have not been optimal in carrying out social control functions. Intensive measures are needed, such as building a communicative family environment, providing age-appropriate education, and strengthening equal access to information to create a stable environment.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of echo chambers in the digital public sphere and its implications for the formation of political opinions among Generation Z on social media, through a comparative analysis of Indonesia and Thailand. The rapid development of information technology has positioned social media as a primary arena for participatory public discourse, while simultaneously fostering information fragmentation driven by algorithmic personalization. This research aims to analyze the formation of echo chambers and their impact on the quality of political discourse by employing the theoretical frameworks of Jürgen Habermas’s public sphere, network society, and filter bubble. A qualitative approach with a netnographic method was applied, focusing on observations of TikTok, Instagram, and X. The data, consisting of digital interactions such as posts, comments, and political narratives, were analyzed using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The findings reveal that echo chambers emerge from the interaction between individual cognitive biases, homogeneous social networks, and platform algorithms that reinforce content personalization. This condition contributes to political polarization, limits the diversity of perspectives, and constrains the development of an inclusive and deliberative public sphere. Comparatively, in Indonesia, echo chambers are largely shaped by electoral competition and popular digital culture, whereas in Thailand they are more closely linked to power relations and state control over digital spaces. These findings indicate a transformation and degradation of the digital public sphere, where opinion formation is increasingly dominated by the reproduction of homogeneous narratives rather than rational-critical debate. Therefore, strengthening digital literacy and critical awareness is essential to sustain an open and democratic digital public sphere.

Abstract

This study explores how Muslim students utilize their leisure time to enjoy entertainment at Cinépolis, a halal-certified cinema in Yogyakarta. The research focuses on value negotiation, moral flexibility, and the construction of religious identity amidst the dynamics of modernity. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and direct observation of students visiting the cinema. The findings reveal that students' choices are not merely driven by entertainment preferences but also reflect efforts to uphold religious values, including the selection of films, the management of prayer times, and interactions with the opposite gender. Halal entertainment options like Cinépolis illustrate the complex negotiation between the desire for recreation and the commitment to religious principles. Students demonstrate moral flexibility by considering the halal aspects of entertainment while navigating dilemmas such as films with adult scenes or schedules that conflict with prayer times. Furthermore, halal entertainment serves not only as a medium for relaxation but also as an expression of an adaptive religious identity, blending Islamic traditions with modernity. Halal cinemas provide a space for compromise where Islamic values can be preserved without disregarding the need for modern entertainment. This study contributes to the understanding of the role of halal entertainment in shaping the religious identity of Muslim youth and offers insights into how halal regulations in Indonesia influence entertainment choices. By highlighting the interplay between social and religious dimensions, the research underscores the dynamic interaction between religion, culture, and modernity in the lives of Muslim students.
