Abstract

Social movements are one of the civil society entities that play an essential role in triggering elite responses to fulfill their responsibilities for the welfare of citizens. We can call various collective activism carried out by these social movements as a contention. This research analyzes internal and external strategies in the dynamics of movement mobilization by the Koalisi Serius Revisi UU ITE, which can create contentious political episodes. Several previous researches in Indonesia have outlined the internal and external strategies that influence the success of a single movement. However, no one explained that movement collaboration is vital in creating sustainable conflict. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. This research chose five key informants by purposive sampling and did in-depth interviews, and supplemented with secondary data by documents and literature. The data obtained was elaborated using Sidney Tarrow's contentious politics perspective and resources mobilization by Edward, McCarthy, and Mataic. The first research finding is related to the importance of internal strategies with resource expansion, and external strategies with the management of threats and opportunities in the process of mobilizing social movements. The second finding shows that collaboration in social movement networks can strengthen the quality of collective contention and encourage the formation of contentious, sustainable political episodes.

Abstract

Nickel downstreaming is considered a key step in boosting Indonesia's economic growth. However, nickel mining practices remain a serious issue, particularly in terms of their impact on local communities and the environment. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aimed at balancing economic benefits with local and environmental sustainability is often seen as inadequately implemented by companies. This study examines the socio-ecological impacts of nickel mining at PT IWIP in Central Halmahera, focusing on the effects of CSR initiatives on local communities and the environment. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with local community members, government representatives, and NGOs, along with participatory observation. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes from participants’ perspectives. The study found that while PT IWIP’s CSR programs improved infrastructure and social access, the benefits were unevenly distributed, with marginalized groups receiving limited support. Furthermore, ecological degradation from mining activities increased the vulnerability of local communities to natural disasters. This research contributes to the understanding of CSR in resource extraction industries, emphasizing the need for more inclusive and sustainable CSR practices to address socio-ecological risks. The study recommends PT IWIP revise its CSR strategy to focus on long-term sustainability and inclusive community development.

Abstract

The phenomenon of climate change is caused by increasing global warming, which affects the length of the dry season, melting polar ice caps and rising sea levels. Fishing communities rely on marine resources to fulfill various livelihood needs. However, this situation is disrupted due to climate change. This research aims to analyze the role of social capital in helping traditional fishermen in Pasar Bengkulu Village overcome the decline in fish catch due to climate change. The method used to analyze this problem will use a qualitative method. Data collection techniques include observation and interviews. The informants in this research are the fishermen community, especially in the Bengkulu market area. Determination of research subjects was done through the snowball method. The results revealed that the impact of climate change causes fishing communities to experience socio-economic problems. The impact of climate change hampers the fishing community in fulfilling their livelihood needs and makes them vulnerable to poverty. From the social side, fishermen are unable to determine the season due to erratic weather, and the longer distance traveled to catch fish, causing large costs for the community.

Abstract

The problem of low interest in reading is one of the fundamental problems that occur in Indonesia. The government is trying to overcome these problems through community reading premises or TBM. In Kutowinangun Lor Village there are six TBMs. TBM is sourced from government programs and community wishes. This study aims to describe the role of TBM in Kutowinangun Lor Village in fostering the interest of the reading community in Kutowinangun Lor Village. The results of the data in this study will be analyzed using the Social Practice Theory put forward by Pierre Bourdieu. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, namely the collection of primary data and secondary data. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation, interview, and documentation methods. The data analysis technique used is data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The results of this study indicate that: (1) According to Bourdieu's perspective, growing interest in reading is influenced by habitus, capital and strategy. (2) According to Bourdieu's perspective, TBM in Kutowinangun Village belongs to three characteristics, namely, having habitus and capital, not having habitus but having capital, and not having habitus and capital. (3) Bottom-up TBM has a role in fostering reading interest, while top-down TBM has not played an optimal role in fostering reading interest. (4) TBMs that have implemented a strategy to foster interest in reading are TBM Garuda, TBM Melati and TBM Semar. Keywords: Reading Interest, Social Practice, Community Reading Park (TBM) AbstrakPermasalahan rendahnya minat baca merupakan salah satu masalah mendasar yang terjadi di Indonesia. Abstract

This study examines how women in Indonesia construct smut manhwa as a safe space, and how this practice illustrates their agency in shaping sexual desire and gender relations within patriarchal structures. Using a phenomenological approach with four informants and three rounds of thematic coding, this study analyses data from online interviews. The findings reveal that women's agency operates ambivalently, simultaneously establishing hidden normative boundaries and negotiating alternatives to patriarchal norms. Women utilize digital resources to access restricted desires, continuously sorting and interpreting content reflectively. A comparison with China highlights how different forms of structural control (social stigma vs. state censorship) shape distinct forms of women's agency. This research contributes to the understanding of women not as passive consumers, but as reflective actors who continuously negotiate the meanings of desire, gender relations, and bodily autonomy within structural constraints.

Abstract

The problem of counterterrorism in Indonesia continues to evolve, including institutional challenges and coordination effectiveness, terrorism funding, implementation of deradicalization efforts, and the political dimension of terrorism. It is important to discuss this phenomenon through a criminological approach that emphasizes the sociological paradigm. Previous studies have limitations in explaining social construction, institutional challenges, and offering Peacemaking Criminology approach in a more comprehensive and efficient counterterrorism effort in Indonesia. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach through thematic analysis of literature review on 57 previous studies. This research found four important findings. First, there are limited preventive detention clauses and communal or sectarian violence in Indonesia. Second, terrorism financing comes in various forms, poor coordination, and no comprehensive approach involving relevant stakeholders. Third, the complexity of efforts to deradicalize terrorism prisoners in correctional institutions. Fourth, the uncertainty in determining the status of terrorism due to political considerations. Peacemaking Criminology approach in this research offers a new solution to counter terrorism in Indonesia by targeting the root of radicalization through emancipative community development and discussing institutional challenges and ways to overcome them.

Abstract

Korean culture has become part of popular culture, giving birth to the Korean wave phenomenon. In Indonesia, Muslims are involved as fans of Korean popular culture, including in their food consumption. For this reason, this research aims to explore the experiences of Muslim Korean fans with halal Korean food and how they negotiate Islam with Korean popular culture through food. This research is field research using descriptive qualitative research methods. The research was conducted at waroeng Hana Gimbab Yogyakarta by conducting interviews with six consumers. The results of this research explain that Muslims' involvement in popular culture as Korean fans shapes their social identity as Muslims and Korean fans. This is done to participate in emerging cultural trends. Apart from that, popular culture also creates a culture of consumerism for Muslim Korean fans, where they consume Korean food as a form of merging with Korean popular culture. In this context, there are two negotiation patterns carried out by Korean Muslim fans regarding Korean food. First, there are strict negotiations, where the encouragement of piety encourages them to adopt halal consumption patterns. Second, there are looser negotiations, where some Muslim Korean fans do not really question the halalness of food and are more free to experiment with consuming Korean food.

Abstract

Reproductive health is often narrowly framed around menstruation, childbirth, and pregnancy, reflecting a patriarchal view of women’s bodies as production tools. In Indonesia, public health behaviors remain below optimal standards, necessitating strategic health promotion efforts. As centers of knowledge production, universities hold significant potential to advance public health education, particularly for younger generations. One such initiative, Menuju Kampus Sejahtera, aims to disseminate reproductive health information and promote a holistic, gender-inclusive understanding. However, the content still predominantly centers on women’s health, reinforcing gendered assumptions. This research employs Michel Foucault’s theory of biopolitics to analyze how power operates through biological regulation, especially via medicalization where medical discourse is used to shape and control individual behaviors. The study uses a qualitative method with a reflexive ethnographic approach to explore how reproductive health narratives are shaped, internalized, and challenged within the university setting. Data was gathered through literature studies and in-depth interviews with students who had engaged with the HPU platform. Reflexivity and positionality were used to address ethical and interpretative dimensions, particularly when dealing with sensitive topics. By critically examining the content and framing of campus health promotion programs, the research highlights the limitations of current narratives and calls for more inclusive approaches that address reproductive health beyond traditional gender binaries. This study contributes to the sociological understanding of how health knowledge is produced, distributed, and experienced in higher education settings, and proposes a gender-transformative framework for reproductive health promotion.

Abstract

The use of smartphones in Indonesia is increasing, including in Kupang City, which affects the pattern of human social interaction with other humans in real and virtual encounters. This study aims to analyze the impact of smartphones on the interaction patterns of students from rural areas in Kupang City. The paradigm used in this study is constructivistic to focus on subjective understanding and individual experience with a qualitative approach. The method is a case study by taking data from 9 appropriate informants to obtain data through interviews in March-May 2023. The results showed: first, there was a change in students' misconceptions in using smartphones. Second, social interactions use smartphones as imitation and imitation, third but due to the disappearance of real space and virtual face boundaries, dissociative interactions shift to associative interactions that make students aware of using smartphones wisely. The implication of this research is the need to increase digital literacy among the younger generation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the survival strategies employed by MSME workers in the kerupuk komplang sector of Bengkulu City. This sector serves not only as a local culinary provider, but also as a significant source of income for the community. However, businesses and workers face several challenges, including changes in income, rising raw material costs, limited funds, and dependence on the local market. This research employs a qualitative approach, utilising the case study method. Data were collected through various means, including observation, document collection, and in-depth interviews with five key informant workers, business owners, and family members who are directly involved in the komplang cracker production process. The findings of this study reveal that MSME workers implement various ways to survive, both economically and socially. Techniques include job variation, austerity, saving even small amounts of money, and leveraging social networks for informal support, such as interest-free loans or labour assistance. Social capital is a crucial element in enhancing workers' resilience. In this context, Robert D. Putnam's theory of social capital is highly relevant, given the importance of networks, norms, and trust in fostering mutually beneficial social cooperation. Social capital is evident in the form of community solidarity, mutual trust between individuals, and the exchange of resources within family environments and the workplace. Even in times of crisis, social capital serves as a major lifeline. From a theoretical point of view, social workers face economic labour.
