Abstract

Guna-Guna is a magical practice that has been going on for a long time, not only in the present but has been going on since the colonial era. It is very possible that the practice of guna-guna has had strong roots in people's lives before the arrival of Europeans and the occurrence of colonization in the Dutch East Indies. The phenomenon of guna-guna became a symptomatic practice in the colonial era and made Dutch people living in the Dutch East Indies experience an encounter with other aspects of a culture in the Indies. Cultural encounters through the phenomenon of guna-guna that spread in the community led to a number of responses and reactions ranging from discussions in community discussion forums, tonil performances and the publication of witch-themed romances. The phenomenon of guna-guna entered the life of the Dutch in the Indies through various channels of various social classes ranging from housemaids, nyai alias mistresses from the natives, business colleagues, colleagues of government employees, etc. This article places the phenomenon of guna-guna as part of a social fact – using the sociological concept of Emile Durkheim – which has attached itself to the socio-cultural life of the Indies community and as an external force that has brought a number of influences in various fields of life ranging from the formation of public knowledge, the emergence of distinctive vocabulary , performing arts and publishing a number of novels with the magical nuances of the Indies. Through qualitative research methodologies – literature review and text analysis of colonial documents in the form of newspapers and advertisements as well as romances – the phenomenon of guna-guna is analyzed from a number of selected cases and observes the development of terms and their impacts to get a picture of the social reality of the Dutch East Indies society in the colonial era.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the views of masculinity from the perspective of metrosexual men and the reasons for choosing to be metrosexual men in the modern era. Metrosexuality is known as a new model of masculinity that describes men who have a high awareness of appearance and lifestyle that is usually closely associated with women. This study uses a qualitative method with Alfred Schutz's phenomenological approach, with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation, and supported by a literature study in the form of previous journal references relevant to the research topic. The results show that metrosexual masculinity in Semarang State University students is caused by the desire to find a partner and be appreciated by those around them. They like to use skincare and bodycare products, and regularly visit beauty clinics. However, metrosexuality is not a sexual orientation, but rather a lifestyle, behavior, and a person's preferences in terms of appearance and self-care. Changes in metrosexual men are not only limited to physical changes, but also changes in attitudes that reflect power relations. This study provides a deeper understanding of the subjective experiences and meanings that individuals give to the metrosexual phenomenon. Thus, this study can contribute to the understanding of masculinity and lifestyle in the modern era.

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of luxury Muslim funerals in Indonesia that reflects the negotiation between traditional Islamic values and modernity among middle-class Muslims. Using a qualitative approach, this study explores how the commodification of religious values affects funeral practices and the meaning of death. The study found that luxury funeral services such as Al-Azhar Memorial Garden not only offer exclusive facilities, but also integrate religious values and social status symbols through modern narratives that are in accordance with Islamic law. Luxury funerals become symbolic spaces that represent piety, class identity, and modern lifestyle aspirations. Moreover, the reinterpretation of funerals and death by middle-class Muslims indicates a self-transformation that reinforces religious practices in daily life. Thus, this phenomenon reflects the complex social dynamics between religiosity, materialism and modernity in urban Muslim society.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out about land conflicts that had occurred for a long time and disturbed the people around the Bukit Kaba Nature Park area, Kepahiang Regency, which resulted in the arrest of several residents around the area. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of interviews, FGDs and observations, which are then analyzed using a rapid land tenure assessment and conflict theory by Ralf Dahrendorf to identify the parties involved, the power of attorney, governance, and licensing arrangements in the area. The results determined that the parties involved were transmigrant communities, ministries in charge of forestry, Bengkulu provincial government, the Bengkulu BKSDA, the Bengkulu Provincial Ombudsman, the District Head, forest rangers, Sub-District Head, Kepahiang Police Chief, Village government, private parties, and Akar Foundation. The involvement of several of these parties has an impact on power, governance and licensing arrangements, where researchers found that there was conflict between the government and the transmigrant community in the distribution of managed land as a result of changes in territorial status and changes in the types of plants allowed to be planted, resulting in restrictions on the community's economic activities. According to the regulations in effect at the time.

Abstract

The issue of gender equality in the world of journalism is still a debate, especially related to the position and treatment of female journalists. This study aims to analyze the meaning of gender equality and women's position in facing the risks of the journalistic world, with a focus on female journalists at the Press Institute of the Gema Campus of the State University of Surabaya. The method used is a descriptive qualitative research with a feminist axiology approach, which involves in-depth interviews and observations of female journalists on campus. The results show that although female journalists on this campus have a good understanding of gender equality and are committed to promoting gender inclusion, challenges such as gender stereotypes and discrimination remain significant barriers. Most informants feel that gender equality is important to fight for, but they still face social stigma and the risk of gender-based violence. In addition, Judith Butler's theory of Gender Social Construction shows that public opinion towards women journalists is influenced by social constructions that associate certain traits with gender, thus exacerbating the gap in the world of journalism. This research makes a unique contribution by revealing the dynamics of risks faced by women journalists in the campus environment as a micro-reflection of the broader challenges in the world of journalism. These findings offer a new perspective on the interaction between gender, professional risk, and advocacy in the world of journalism, as well as encourage the formulation of policies that are more responsive to gender equality.

Abstract

Traditional houses are attached to life because they are the space and place where indigenous people live. Generally, traditional houses in the Toraja tribe are known as tongkonan. Meanwhile, there is also another traditional house from the Toraja Mamasa tribe (West Toraja) as a sub-tribe of Toraja that has a special traditional house called banua. For the Toraja Mamasa people, the meaning of a traditional house is more than that. In fact, banua is not just a place to live, but a space that contains religious values within it. Indigenous people have beliefs about banua as a sacred traditional house. The purpose of this research is to argue the sacredness of the banua traditional house of the Toraja Mamasa tribe in shaping the connectivity and collectivity of indigenous peoples with local beliefs. This research used a qualitative approach with a realist ethnography research type. Data collection was conducted using interview techniques and documents, including the use of books and scientific articles. The results showed that the sacredness of the banua traditional house and the kitchen space (lombon) in particular became the basis for the formation of their connectivity and collectivity as indigenous peoples with local beliefs. The most sacred part is the kitchen. The sacredness of the banua socio-theologically functions to construct their communal identity and religiosity related to connectivity and collectivity.

Abstract

This research examines the transformation of religious learning for deaf people through the Deaf Recitation Movement initiated by PPA Darul Qur'an. This research aims to analyse four main aspects: the religious learning methods and curriculum applied, the challenges faced in the learning process, the social impact of this learning approach, and social reflection and comparison of inclusive education contexts in other countries. This research emphasises the importance of empowerment programs to provide equal access to religious education for people with disabilities, especially deaf people. The research results show that the Deaf Recitation Movement program has impacted inclusive social change. Even though it is faced with challenges, this program can increase independence and religiousness for people with disabilities

Abstract

This study aims to challenge the traditional concept of achievement often defined merely as formal recognition. It seeks a broader and more inclusive understanding of achievement by acknowledging various forms of success and abilities possessed by students. The research methodology employed is qualitative research. Data were collected through three main techniques: in-depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation. Informants for the study were purposively selected to ensure they possessed relevant knowledge and experience on the research topic, consisting of three students, two teachers, and three parents of students. Data obtained were analyzed using Interactive Analysis techniques. The findings of the study indicate that the definition of achievement extends beyond academic accomplishments to include personal development, social skills, and the ability to overcome challenges. The implications of this research are crucial in supporting every child to reach their full potential and in fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment. Every child deserves recognition for their achievements, not only in academic fields but also in the development of personal skills and values that prepare them for the future, thereby promoting a more inclusive paradigm shift in the assessment and recognition of student achievements.

Abstract

Women's empowerment has an important role in development. One of the ways to realize empowerment for women is the Sustainable Food Yard (P2L) program. With this empowerment, the community, especially mothers, can experience changes in their level of knowledge, attitudes and increased welfare. Thus, the community in Wonosobo Village, Banyuwangi Regency has implemented Sustainable Food Farming (P2L) activities through the institution of the Sri Tanjung Women's Farmers Group. Through Sustainable Food Yard (P2L) activities, group members can fulfill their need for vegetables for daily consumption. The women's empowerment carried out by KWT Sri Tanjung is related to tradition because Wonosobo Village really upholds traditional values. Social Capital in cultural relationships is highly correlated. Social norms, social networks, and beliefs are the main factors in tradition. The village clean ritual provides space for women to contribute to the ritual, even though women are always placed in the domestic sphere. The culture in Wonosobo Village provides access for women to become ajen or leaders in the mocoan tradition or reading the lontar book. In the era of modernization there have been changes to the village's clean ritual customs, there are several performances such as jaranan, music and so on. Ider bumi is part of the Osing culture, but in its activities there is a mixture of Javanese culture in it which is not a serious problem, because the two cultures coexist. Traditions and P2L programs go hand in hand, resulting in productive and complementary activities. The type of research used in this research is a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. To determine informants, purposive sampling was used and data collection was carried out through observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. In testing the validity of the research data, source triangulation was used and for data analysis, namely through data transcript, namely categorization of data in text form the final step is drawing conclusions.

Abstract

This study aims to understand how members of the Generasi Baru Indonesia XI Universitas Sumatera Utara (GenBI XI USU) community engage in social practices related to the implementation of a zero waste lifestyle. The research addresses the issue of high waste production in Medan City and explores how youth communities respond to environmental challenges through sustainable living. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was used to explore the subjective experiences of community members. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving GenBI members who apply the 5R principles: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot. The analysis was conducted using Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice, focusing on the concepts of habitus, capital, and field. The findings reveal that the formation of a zero waste habitus is influenced by family experiences, educational environments, and community activities. Social, cultural, economic, and symbolic capitals significantly support the sustainability practices adopted by community members. Moreover, the zero waste lifestyle becomes a site of symbolic contestation within the community, allowing members to demonstrate environmental awareness and strengthen their identity as responsible youth. This study highlights the role of communities as agents of change in fostering ecological habits through the internalization of sustinable values and practices within their social fields.
