Abstract

This study aims to analyse the impact of tanah sangkol conversion on environmental damage in Sumenep Regency, Madura, and to understand the social factors that influence changes in land function. Tanah Sangkol conversion, generally in the form of conversion of agricultural land to land for settlements or the shrimp farming industry, is an important issue that impacts environmental quality and community welfare. This research methodology uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and participatory observation. The study results indicate that tanah sangkol conversion in Sumenep has caused soil quality degradation, reduced productive agricultural areas, and decreased biodiversity. Social factors influencing land conversion include increased demand for residential and industrial land, economic pressures, and weak implementation of environmental protection policies. In addition, uncertainty in land use regulations has worsened environmental conditions in the Sumenep area. The contribution of this study to sociology is to provide an understanding of the relationship between social, economic, and environmental dynamics in the context of land conversion. This study also contributes to the study of social change related to natural resource management and its impacts on local communities, especially in efforts to achieve sustainable development. Thus, this research can be a reference for more holistic land and environmental management policies in rural areas.

Abstract

This research on the perceptions of Islamic Religious College students in Jambi City towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) aims to see the extent of their perceptions (cognitive, affective and conative) and intentions towards LGBT at PTKI Jambi City. This research involved all PTKI students in Jambi City (13,237 students). The sample was determined using proportionate stratified random sampling (389 students). The research method uses a combination (mixed method research) with a sequential explanatory type strategy. Data collection techniques use questionnaires, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique used is a mixed method technique. Quantitative analysis uses the mean formula followed by qualitative analysis. Influence analysis is seen by evaluating the model by examining the R Square value and analyzing the relationship between variables using the SEM-PLS bootstrapping method. The total mean perception value (3.046) shows that students reject LGBT behavior. Student perceptions have a strong influence on intentions to engage in LGBT as seen from the R Square value (82.4%) and significantly seen from the statistical T value and P values. Students' intention to break the LGBT chain is high (mean value 3.23). The interview results show that government outreach about the dangers of LGBT can be introduced early. Removing LGBT content on social media is also very important to do.

Abstract

This study was carried out with the intention of discovering the minimalist lifestyle of members of the Liyfe With Less Community in their everyday activities and their efforts to protect the environment. The research approach utilized is netnography, which involves examining the culture of a specific group or community virtually by leveraging information gathered through digital platforms. Data gathering was conducted through netnographic observation, interviews, and documentation, while data analysis employed Max Weber's social action theory. The findings of the study indicate that members of the Lyfe With Less Community practice a minimalist lifestyle through decluttering, utilizing items until they are finished or worn out, making thoughtful consumption choices, and opting for products made from eco-friendly materials. A minimalist approach positively influences the environment. First, it decreases waste generation by adopting mindful consumption habits. Second, it fosters a sustainable lifestyle through the use of eco-friendly products. Third, it minimizes the carbon footprint by embracing the principle of living "just enough. Fourth, it encourages the shift from a linear economy to a circular economy, which emphasizes the use of sustainable and environmentally considerate materials.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the increasing number of child-friendly villages (Kampung Ramah Anak, KRA) is directly proportional to the growing number of cases of unsustainability in their management, with some even experiencing stagnation. Various development strategies have been implemented to support KRA initiatives, one of which involves transforming these villages into educational tourism destinations. This approach is designed to enhance public interest in KRA while strengthening local community participation in their management. This phenomenon serves as the scientific rationale for determining the object of study in this research, which focuses on the development of child-friendly village-based educational tourism in Sabrangrowo Hamlet, Borobudur Village, Magelang Regency. The research seeks to answer the question: How sustainable is the development of child-friendly village-based educational tourism in Sabrangrowo Hamlet?. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, grounded in three main variables from Jim Ife's community development theory: (1) increasing critical awareness within the community, (2) fostering active participation of the target community, and (3) ensuring the sustainability of development through independent initiatives by the target community. The research findings indicate that the development of child-friendly village-based educational tourism in Sabrangrowo has not progressed, with KRA management showing signs of stagnation. The primary causal factors identified are: (1) efforts to increase critical awareness were primarily focused on youth groups as the main managers, without involving the broader community, and (2) the development program design, which was based on local aspirations, proved less effective because the Sabrangrowo community lacked sufficient knowledge and experience in managing child-friendly village-based educational tourism. The findings emphasize the importance of developing an integrative model of child-friendly village-based educational tourism, supported by intensive mentoring strategies. Such assistance aims to prepare the community to independently manage the program, ensuring sustainability in the long term.

Abstract

This study examines the #MeToo movement in India as a form of digital activism advancing gender justice. Despite legal reforms such as the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act and the POSH Act (2013), institutional protections for women remain insufficient, particularly within informal sectors. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach and drawing upon secondary data, the research utilises Melucci’s theory of new social movements and Hunt and Benford’s identity-oriented framework to analyse how the movement constructs collective identity, fosters emotional solidarity, and mobilises moral commitment. The findings reveal that #MeToo in India enabled survivors to transform personal experiences of sexual violence into a shared collective narrative, using digital platforms as both spaces of testimony and resistance. The movement exposed structural inequalities, particularly caste- and class-based exclusions, while simultaneously disrupting dominant narratives through acts of online solidarity and public accountability. However, challenges persist in ensuring intersectional inclusivity and bridging the gap between digital mobilisation and institutional change. Theoretically, this article contributes to scholarship on social movements by highlighting how digital platforms facilitate identity-based mobilisation in contexts of legal and structural deficiency. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the Indian #MeToo movement illustrates both the emancipatory potential and the structural limits of digital feminist activism in advancing inclusive gender justice.

Abstract

The Ngaju Dayak tribe upholds ancestral traditions that are evident through attitudes of kinship and mutual cooperation. These traditions show customary ties that become moral rules that also regulate their relationship with the transcendent and that instruct Kaharingan people to belom Bahadat, which means good behavior or deeds, so that balance, harmony, and natural order will be maintained. The gap in this research is the need for social actions that arise to regulate balance, harmony, and the maintenance of natural order. This research used the qualitative research by producing narrative and descriptive data. Data sources came from interviews with Basir as well as books, journal articles, and party documents related to the issue of the Ngaju Dayak tribe's actions towards the forest. Four distinctive idealized forms of action are distinguished from some of these social actions, but certain actions appear to consist of a combination of these four idealized forms of action. Customary actions may reflect the beliefs of the Ngaju Dayak tribe. That is, plots contain value-based rationality and reflect a conscious choice of goals, including the goal of maintaining a balance between the Ngaju Dayak tribe and the forest in their utilization.

Abstract

This study examines how social structures influence and legitimize early marriage practices, and how these practices impact family functions in Tanjung Harapan Village, Tanjung Raya Subdistrict, Mesuji Regency. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and Talcott Parsons' structural functionalism theory, this research involved ten purposively selected informants, including underage married couples, their parents, village officials, and religious leaders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings reveal that early marriage is driven by economic vulnerability, cultural normalization, peer influence, and the weak role of formal institutions, resulting in informal legitimacy that overrides state law. These conditions lead to family dysfunction, marked by financial dependence, emotional immaturity, and constrained social roles. Through the AGIL framework, this study identifies the failure of adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and latency functions within the local social system. It concludes that early marriage is not merely a personal or moral issue, but a systemic problem rooted in structural inequality. The study recommends strengthening preventive efforts through community-based education and the involvement of local institutions in promoting healthy family development.

Abstract

Rebu is a tradition of the Karo people that imposes restrictions on speaking, touching, and being in the same room with parents-in-law, sons-in-law, or siblings-in-law after marriage. This tradition aims to maintain the harmony of kinship relationships formed through marriage. This study aims to describe the kinship relationships between in-laws in Karo families in Padang City and to depict the changes in rebu practices there. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques including observation, in-depth interviews, literature study, and documentation. Informants were selected using the snowball sampling technique, consisting of six key informants and five supporting informants. Data analysis utilized the concepts of avoidance relationship and joking relationship, as well as cultural contact theory. The findings indicate that the rebu tradition in Padang City has undergone changes. The practice of rebu among the Karo community in Padang is not as strict as it is in Karo Regency. Reasons for these changes include a lack of social control and the more relaxed urban lifestyle, such as living together in the same house or the necessity of greeting each other during certain moments. The practice of rebu in the hometown differs from that in Padang City because the Karo community in Padang has started to abandon this tradition due to the absence of strong social control from the local Karo community.

Abstract

This study explores the perceptions of art students in Surakarta regarding religious moderation in artistic expression and compares them with the context in Cairo through a literature review. The research employs a qualitative method with a literature-based approach and thematic analysis techniques. The analysis integrates Talcott Parsons' AGIL theory (adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and latency) and Dahrendorf's conflict theory to examine the tension between freedom of expression and social norms. Religious elements in art often spark controversy, especially in culturally diverse regions like Surakarta. The study aims to understand how future artists view and incorporate religious values into their work. Participants were purposively selected, considering religious diversity and artistic experience. Findings reveal that art students in Surakarta view religious moderation as an effort to create harmony in art, despite challenges in balancing religious values and creative freedom. Using AGIL theory, the study identifies students' adaptation to religious values, their goal to produce inclusive art, integration of artistic freedom with religious norms, and the latency of internalizing moderation values. Meanwhile, Dahrendorf's conflict theory highlights social tensions influencing students' creative processes. The literature review on Cairo underscores religious moderation as a foundation for social harmony, with Al-Azhar University exemplifying tolerance through religious education. This research contributes to the academic field by offering deeper insights into the relationship between art, religion, and religious moderation. It provides practical guidance for art institutions to develop inclusive and harmonious art practices in diverse cultural and religious contexts.
