Abstract

Giving a name at birth or birth name is often associated with various things, such as place, atmosphere, or event. The current era, where technological develops and increasing public access to the outside world through electronic equipment and everything based on the Internet is believed to have an influence on giving birth names to people. It is interesting to examine how parents currently consider giving names to their children; consider that naming is related to the population policy issued by the Indonesian Government, especially in the Population Identification Card (KTP) and Family Card (KK) services. This research located in Kotayasa and Karanggintung Villages, Sumbang District, Banyumas, aims to reveal and describe parents' considerations in giving names to their children and its relationship with population administration. This research uses a survey or questionnaire method targeting heads of families who have immature children (under 18 years). The sample used a proportional simple random sampling technique of 160 respondents. The interview method used to support the questionnaire method. Data analysis uses descriptive statistics. The results of this study show that around 60% of respondents said that considerations for giving names came from the media or television shows, both soap operas and other types, others from the Internet, and only around 15% looked for data about names and their meanings. Most of these names consist of two syllables. The myth about names as prayers only believed by around 50% of respondents.

Abstract

The phenomenon of "nembak SIM," which refers to obtaining a Driver's License (SIM) without going through the official examination process, has become an issue that poses a potential risk to road safety, especially among students. This study aims to analyze the impact of this practice on the road safety of students at the State University of Surabaya (UNESA) using a descriptive qualitative approach through in-depth interviews. The results indicate that students who obtained their SIM through illegal means have a lower understanding of traffic rules, are more likely to violate regulations, and are more prone to being involved in accidents. Theoretically, this research contributes to understanding the impact of administrative social deviance on road safety behavior, as well as highlighting the importance of comprehensive traffic awareness and education. Methodologically, this study offers a qualitative interview approach as an effective tool to explore individuals' perceptions and experiences regarding the "nembak SIM" practice, which can serve as a foundation for further research on social behavior in the context of traffic safety. The results showed that students who obtained their driver's license through illegal channels tend to have a lower understanding of traffic rules and break the rules more often than those who took the official exam. In addition, this group also had more accidents due to a lack of preparedness in dealing with situations on the road. In conclusion, the practice of “SIM shooting” contributes to the low driving safety of UNESA students. Therefore, there is a need for more intensive education on the importance of obtaining a driver's license officially as well as increased awareness of the risks of driving on the road without adequate skills.

Abstract

This research examines how gender stereotypes shape the social construction of women as leaders, often perceiving them as less competent than men. Focusing on the 2024 East Java Gubernatorial Election, where all candidates are women, the study aims to understand university students' perceptions of women's leadership. It analyzes the influence of patriarchal norms on these perceptions and explores how views may vary based on gender, cultural background, and geography. Utilizing Peter L. Berger's social construction theory, which consists of three stages—externalization, objectivation, and internalization—the study employs a qualitative approach, conducting in-depth interviews. The research involved 12 participants: six students with East Java ID cards and six students from outside East Java who are currently studying in Surabaya. Participants were selected through purposive sampling to ensure representation from various study programs and included individuals aged 18 to 25. This approach aimed to encompass a diverse range of social, educational, and geographical backgrounds. The data were analyzed thematically through processes of data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that gender stereotypes remain a significant obstacle, particularly among male students who tend to be skeptical of women's leadership abilities. However, progressive views are starting to emerge, especially among female students and the younger generation, who evaluate leadership based on individual competence rather than gender. The 2024 East Java gubernatorial election is viewed as a crucial opportunity to shift the patriarchal social construct toward greater gender equality.

Abstract

Generation Z's flexing and personal branding practices on social media that display wealth, achievements, appearance, and relationships attract public attention. This qualitative study with a virtual ethnography research design aims to identify the behavioral patterns of generation Z in interacting on social media as well as the perceptions of the viewing audience. Data was collected through observations on influencers' social media accounts and Twitter using the keywords 'flexing' and 'personal branding' and interviews with 6 informants. Data that met the criteria was then interpreted contextually and recontextually until it entered the content analysis stage. The results were analyzed using symbolic interactionism theory, social reality construction theory, and critical theory. As a result, Generation Z's behavior patterns in flexing or personal branding have characteristics that describe symbols of wealth, achievement, appearance, and relationships. This forms a social reality about the standard of living reflected in social media. The negative impact affects the emergence of alienation, social inequality, and exploitation.

Abstract

Since the enactment of Law No. 6 of 2014, villages have received funds directly from the central government. In practice, village funds are subject to a number of binding regulations that have altered the established practices of village fund management, significantly impacting fund management at the grassroots level. The method used in this study is quantitative descriptive analysis to compare village fund management before and after the Village Law, as well as quantitative methods to determine the relationship between village funds and the increase in the Village Development Index in Gresik Regency. In this study, researchers found a positive relationship between increases in village funds and increases in the Village Development Index (IDM). The regression coefficient for village funds was 0.64, indicating a positive influence on the Village Development Index. However, this influence is small. Therefore, it can be concluded that village funds have an influence on increasing the Human Development Index (HDI) in Gresik Regency. Consequently, in accordance with Bourdieu’s theory, it is emphasized that the distribution of village funds does not merely increase the index but also creates opportunities for social transformation.

Abstract

This study explores the role of the halal concept as social capital in shaping the economic identity of Muslims in the globalization era. Using a qualitative literature review approach, the study maps relevant literature related to the transformation of halal values and Muslim consumer behavior. The findings reveal three main dimensions. First, the halal concept has evolved from a mere religious obligation into a symbolic capital that adds value to products in the global market while strengthening the collective identity of Muslims. Second, within Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework, halal functions as symbolic capital that provides social legitimacy, economic differentiation, and reinforces new hierarchies in the global market. Third, Putnam's theory explains how halal practices build solid social networks through a combination of bonding and bridging capital, fostering trust among producers, consumers, and certification bodies. Halal contributes not only to the sustainability of the global halal industry but also promotes the creation of a more ethical and inclusive business ecosystem. This research provides new perspectives on how the halal concept functions as social capital, reinforcing global economic dynamics while supporting the sustainable growth of the halal market.

Abstract

Development cannot be separated from the situation of the capitalist system. Ulrick Beck explains that development will lead to a society that has a high risk of life. Development with the concept of Neoliberalism will focus on economic growth. Urban development requires land, which can be obtained from evictions. The urban poor become vulnerable groups who are often affected by evictions. This situation makes people fight back against the injustice they experience. The people who live in Kampung Kentingan Baru are a picture of the evicted residents and fight back. This research uses Qualitative research method with Critical Ethnography approach. Data were collected through interviews, participant observation, direct observation, FGD, and document study. The results of this study illustrate that the people of Kentingan Baru live in high risk. They live in a cycle of evictions that is not just one-time, some residents have been evicted before living in Kentingan Baru. People who moved from Kentingan Baru also live in villages that are also threatened with eviction. Thus, the urban poor are in a perpetual cycle of eviction. The urban poor also have a low health risk because they live in inadequate housing after the eviction. When they resist, they are also threatened in the economic aspect because they are laid off or cannot work because they have to stand guard in the village when there is news of eviction and the security aspect where they often get intimidated.

Abstract

This study analyses the response of Indonesians to MUI fatwa No. 83 of 2023 on the law of supporting the Palestinian cause, specifically the boycott of Israeli products through Instagram. Using a qualitative case study approach with data collection techniques through systematic observation and documentation, this research analyses 20 posts with the highest engagement and around 2,500 comments in November 2023. The theoretical framework integrates Resource Mobilisation Theory, Collective Action Theory, and Digital Activism Theory. The results showed that public responses fell into three categories: pro-fatwa groups that emphasized humanitarian and religious solidarity, contra-fatwa groups that were concerned about economic impacts such as layoffs and losses of small traders, and neutral groups that questioned the clarity of the fatwa. Instagram serves as a discursive space for the dissemination of information on Israel-related products, the articulation of collective Muslim identity in solidarity with Palestine, and the coordination of boycott actions. The ambiguity of MUI's fatwa in mentioning specific brands led to various interpretations and public debates. This research expands the understanding of the transformation of religious authority in the digital era, showing how fatwas are negotiated through digital spaces. This phenomenon reinforces the theory of ‘connective action’ where social media is a channel for collective message dissemination and enables the personalization of resistance narratives and the formation of transnational solidarity.

Abstract

The Ngabers youth group is one of the group-based juvenile delinquency cases that causes unrest and threats in the community because the presence of the Ngabers youth group with all its activities such as rolling, arrogance driving, and other delinquency activities can be detrimental to road users and the people of Bandung City itself. This phenomenon creates an analogy for the city of Bandung to be similar to a fictional city, namely Gotham City. Gotham City is a fictional city full of darkness and crime that is contained in the storylines of films and comics produced by DC Comics. This writing uses a qualitative approach with the case study method. Through a data collection process, the results obtained from the research are: (1) Bandung City and Gotham City have similar aspects, namely criminal characteristics and different aspects as well. (2) The factors that cause youth to join the Ngabers group are internal factors and external factors. (3) The general description of the behavior/activities carried out by young ngabers includes disturbing activities such as rolling, arrogance driving, abusing illegal drugs, and drinking liquor and there are also supporting activities such as street photography. The solution from the police that has been outlined is action against noisy exhausts, night patrols, to guidance by the Criminal Investigation Unit. However, this solution is not effective considering that community participation is still not sensitive and communicative.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of fintech lending in Indonesia has coincided with rising concerns over digital debt dependency, particularly among low-income and young populations. While regulatory and financial risks have dominated public discourse, less attention has been paid to the psychosocial and socio-cultural conditions underlying fintech lending behavior. This study examines the deviant aspects of fintech use through an integrated psychosocial-cultural lens, highlighting how such behaviors arise not solely from individual irresponsibility but from the intersection of emotional vulnerability, social marginalization, and the cultural normalisation of debt. A mixed-methods approach was employed. The first phase involved a scoping literature review to identify conceptual and theoretical gaps. The second phase applied supervised machine learning (SVM, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Neural Network) to national survey data (BPS and OJK) to detect behavioral patterns. The third phase conducted a thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with five fintech users from high-risk urban areas. The findings indicate consistent patterns of emotional fragility, fintech use dependency, institutional distrust, and symbolic adaptation to debt culture. These behaviors reflect structural and psychological deviance, where fintech use serves as both a coping strategy and a socio-cultural adaptation amid economic precarity and institutional exclusion. This study contributes to interdisciplinary scholarship by extending strain and labeling theories in tandem with psychological theories of vulnerability and coping, reframing fintech use as a socially and emotionally constructed adaptation rather than moral failure. Policy-wise, it calls for culturally grounded financial literacy, stronger digital consumer protection, and inclusive reforms that address systemic inequality and distrust in formal institutions
