Abstract

This research investigates how students at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Jenderal Soedirman University, utilize Chat GPT to complete academic tasks and how this affects academic ethics. It is driven by the rising use of artificial intelligence—particularly Chat GPT—which is reshaping students’ learning patterns and assignment completion strategies. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings suggest that a desire for time efficiency, limited access to academic supervisors, and academic pressure drive the use of ChatGPT. Students use Chat GPT to generate ideas, draft task structures, and develop thesis outlines. However, most students still revise the output to avoid plagiarism. The study reveals that uncritical use of ChatGPT can lead to academic ethical violations. Based on Robert K. Merton’s theory of anomie, such deviations arise from systemic pressures that emphasize academic success while overlooking individual capacities and talents. Thus, there is an urgent need for clear academic ethical guidelines in the use of artificial intelligence within higher education. This study extends Merton’s anomie theory by demonstrating how students adapt innovatively—utilizing artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT—when academic goals conflict with limited resources. Universities should establish clear guidelines for ethics and digital literacy to ensure the responsible use of artificial intelligence in learning.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has shaped the lifestyle of Generation Z, or “zoomers,” who are known as digital natives. iPhone ownership among zoomers in Purwokerto reflects not only functional needs but also symbolic consumption linked to identity and social status. This study aims to analyze how zoomers in Purwokerto interpret iPhone ownership as part of their self-identity construction. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, which were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model to identify patterns of meaning. The results indicate that iPhone ownership among zoomers is closely linked to status symbols, personal branding, social integration, and the representation of a consumerist lifestyle. Although aware of the consumptive nature of this practice, the Zoomers generation continues to prioritize avoiding social pressures such as the fear of missing out (FOMO) by making the iPhone a symbol of modernity and prestige. This study concludes that the iPhone functions not only as a communication tool but also as a cultural symbol that reinforces a consumptive lifestyle while legitimizing social existence in the digital age.

Abstract

This research explores the experiences of veiled women in the digital era, particularly in Surabaya. Using Alfred Schutz's phenomenological approach, this research examines how veiled women express their identity and respond to social stigma through social media. Digital platforms become an important space for them to share their beliefs, build communities, and redefine how society perceives them. However, these platforms also bring challenges in the form of negative stereotypes and discrimination, both directly and indirectly. The research data was obtained through in-depth interviews with veiled women who actively use social media. The results showed that social media became an important space for veiled women to build positive narratives, expand social networks, and counter negative stereotypes. However, they also face challenges in the form of online discrimination, negative comments, and social pressure. Each subject shows different strategies: some utilize social media for da'wah, some are cautious in sharing content, and some are more selective in showing their veiled identity. The findings emphasized the role of social media as a dynamic space for negotiating social identity, as well as the importance of lifeworld, intersubjectivity, and typification in this process. The novelty of this research lies in exploring the experiences of veiled women in digital spaces, which extends previous studies that focus more on physical social interactions. The results of this study are expected to enrich the literature on gender, religion, and technology, as well as provide practical insights for religious moderation efforts and empowerment of veiled women's groups in the digital era.

Abstract

The world is having globalization, especially in culture. Childfree is one of the many cultures as well as the ideology of western society which has been globalization into the layers of Indonesian society. This has received public scrutiny because it is considered to be very incompatible with the idealistic Indonesian family culture. To find out the public's view of childfree by liberalism, the authors use a comparative method by making comparisons of the variables tested. The results of the research show that people who are against childfree are people who have high religious values and have a strong spirit of upheld culture. Meanwhile, the majority of people who are pro with western ideology are the millennial generation who have precipitated citizenship rights but have not acculturated a new culture. They are individuals who really care about their future careers. Childfree is a western culture that enters Indonesia and undermines society's construction of the ideal family. However, if we review it again, the western ideology, which is considered too liberal by the people, contains the value of rights as citizens which cannot be interfered with by other people in statutory regulations.

Abstract

This article examines the social manifestations of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by highlighting the role of global social movements, such as Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS), as a response to human rights violations, genocidal crimes and longstanding conflict. The main focus of this research is to analyze the potential of nonviolent movements in building dialogue, easing tensions, and supporting the effectiveness of diplomatic negotiations to achieve peaceful resolutions. This research uses a literature review approach by utilizing books, journal articles, and media reports as primary sources. The results show that resource mobilization theory can explain the success of the boycott movement, which is supported by a structured organization, cross-country cooperation, and global solidarity networks. The movement had an impact on the formation of public opinion, changes in international policy, and the development of diplomacy. However, to increase its effectiveness, broader support, solid international cooperation, and concrete diplomatic steps from the global community, including Indonesia's active role, are needed to realize justice and sustainable peace.

Abstract

This article focuses on the dynamics of young women's experiences in using internet-based technology amid the increasing trend of online gender-based violence (OGBV). This study deploys a qualitative approach, in which data collection is conducted through Forum Group Discussion (FGD) and in-depth interviews. Using feminist standpoint theory, women tending to be at risk of being victims become main informant. From their experiences, the   meaningful information of how technology turns to be a new arena for the practice of violence against women could be identified.  However, sociologically, based on the subaltern counterpublic perspective, the current study also shows that technology allows women to create safe spaces. Therefore, there is capacity of agentive practice that could be utilized to anticipate, respond to and resist the risk of OGBV, whether in the individual level or based on collective solidarity.

Abstract

Alternate Universe (AU) is a form of fan fiction that talks about the main character (idol) in a situation and life that is made different from their original life. Twitter is one of the media used to write AUs. The majority of AUs on Twitter are presented in the form of threads containing fake chats, narratives, pictures or photos, and even videos. The blurred boundaries of reality that exist in AUs have several impacts, such as the construction of the reader's mind that their idols have the characteristics shown in the story. Many writers create role-player accounts of fictional characters to accommodate readers' imaginations. Thus, many readers cannot distinguish between the original and simulated realities. One of the most popular AUs is “Komdis” which will be the focus of this research. The researcher will examine in more depth how the relationship between AU “Komdis” in the hyperreality process and how readers represent it in social media. This research uses a qualitative method with an autoethnographic approach where the researcher is also the author of AU “Komdis”. The theory used to analyze the data findings in this research is Jean Baudrillard's hyperreality theory and Stuart Hall's representation theory. The results show that there is a double simulation where the AU itself is a simulation. Then, the readers who are simulated by “Komdis” simulate it again on social media.

Abstract

The batik workshop with people with disabilities in the Difabelzone.Id community is an interesting phenomenon to study. People with disabilities become batik mentors, while visitors become their students. In this activity, there is direct interaction between visitors and people with disabilities, which shows a blurring of space between normal and inclusion spaces. This paper describes how the interaction in the batik workshop at Diffablezone.Id changes the perspective of people with disabilities towards themselves. How is the interaction able to bring visitors into the inclusion space? This research uses qualitative and ethnographic methods, using George Herbert Mead's symbolic interaction theory framework. Data collection techniques were carried out through participant observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature study. The results showed that the interaction in the batik workshop activities was able to change and create new meanings for people with disabilities. Initially, they were insecure and exclusive in becoming secure and open to many people; this was due to the exchange of symbols between the two, who could fight the stigma and negative stereotypes attached to them. The interaction also creates a mentor-student relationship between visitors and people with disabilities that can bring visitors into the inclusion space. They interact directly and experience an environment different from their own, creating a deeper understanding of them. In addition, the batik workshop activity creates an inclusive space through direct social interaction.

Abstract

This research examines the discipline and power of the body that occurs in the bodies of women on diets. Women are often objectified in society because of their behaviors, obligations, social values, and even their bodies. As a result of this objectification, an idealized image of the female body emerges in society. This construction causes women to be dissatisfied with their bodies both biologically and aesthetically, which makes them feel inferior and compare themselves to the ideal body image. Women's desire to fulfill this image leads them to self-control, which can be achieved through dieting. Some popular diet methods are calorie deficit and intermittent fasting (IF), which are also practiced by many women who are followers of the X (Twitter) account @diethingy. This research uses the theory of discipline and power of the body introduced by Michel Foucault using qualitative research methods and a phenomenological study approach. The data collection techniques used were observation and interviews conducted online. This research uses a purposive sampling technique to determine informants—data checking and validity techniques using source triangulation. The results of this study show that not all women go through a complete disciplinary process, as Foucault conveys. Most of the women in this study feel they have power over themselves. However, in reality, this power is pseudo-power because the women are not completely free and are still bound by power relations in society.
