Abstract

Chitosan is product of shrimp shell waste utilization that derived from chitin. Based on its nature and characteristics, it is known that chitosan has important role in agriculture as a stimulant for the plant defense system as well as growth and production of some horticultural crops such as tomatoes. The purpose of this research is to study the influence of the chitosan treatment on the growth of tomatoes and to determine the effect of treatment combination on the growth of tomatoes. Chitosan treatment experiments on the growth of tomatoes during vegetative phase is done by Complete Random Design with 1 factor, that is chitosan treatments combination including P1 (control), P2 (chitosan soaking 25 ppm), P3 (watering and chitosan soaking 25 ppm), P4 (soaking and spraying chitosan 25 ppm) and P5 (soaking, watering and spraying chitosan 25 ppm). Chitosan soaking treatment at 25 ppm in tomato seeds have more value in growth rate and growth effort than the untreated plant. The best treatment is founded in the combination of soaking treatment with chitosan spraying in 25 ppm (P4), it’s better if it’s compared with other treatment (each parameter include the height of plants, the number of branches, the number of leaves, the length of leaves and wet weight and dry weight of the plants)

Abstract

Fish skin is one of many parts from fish that can be utillized beside the muscle. Proteolytic enzymes like cathepsin and collagenase are known as one of the factors that influence in fish skin quality deterotiation after death. The research purposes were to determine post mortem phase, quality deterioration pattern, cathepsin and collagenase activity, and its correlation to the parameters of milkfish freshness. The observations were done on fasted and fed fish before harvested at room and chilling temperature storage. The highest chatepsin and collagenase activity i.e. 7800-1429 U/ml and 0,0667-0,0792 U/ml respectively, were found in fish during the post-rigor phase. Simple linear correlation analysis showed that chatepsin and collagenase activity have a very close linear relationship (r 0.7) with fish freshness quality parameters during the process of quality deterioration from pre rigor until post rigor phase.

Abstract

Yellow velvetleaf (Limnocharis flava) is aquatic plant and known as vegetable and source of bioactive compound but it has aerenchyma system which affects to its proximate. The research purpose was to determine microscopic characteristics of yellow velvetleaf tissues such as leaf, stem, and root tissue. The proximate and bioactive compound from fresh and steam materials were also evaluated. The methods of the research consisted of plant dimension measurement, making of tissue slide by paraffin method in Johansen-TBA series, phytochemical analysis, proximate and carotenoid total analysis. The results showed that leaf tissue was composed by epidermis unilayer containing stoma, a palisades parenchyma layer, spongy parenchyma layer with some aerenchyma system, and vascular bundle. Stem tissue consisted of epidermis unilayer, cortex containing chlorophyll, starch, and some aerenchyma system, and vascular bundle was amphicribral type. Root tissue was composed by rhizodermis, cortex with aerenchyma system, endodermis multilayer, and vascular bundle. Fresh yellow velvetleaf contained 91,76% of moisture, 12,40% of ash, 7,95% of fat, 22,96% of protein, 11,93% of crude fibre, and 219,01 g/g of carotenoid total in its leaf. Its stem contained 95,33% of moisture, 16,38% of ash, 5,62% of fat, 13,23% of protein, 16,12% of crude fibre, and 92,99 g/g of carotenoid total. Steaming decreased crude fibre content, but increased ash, fat, and protein content. Steaming also increased leaf carotenoid total, but decreased stem carotenoid total. Leaf extract contained flavonoid, phenol, reducing sugar, and amino acid. Stem extract was composed by flavonoid, reducing sugar, amino acid. Flavonoid and reducing sugar were major bioactive compounds in this plant.

Abstract

Scales of fish represent side product which not yet been exploited optimally. Fish scales in industrial scale (side product of fish fillet industry) can be used as collagen source, while in domestic scale generally only thrown. This research aim to know fish scales potency by determining rendemen, chemical composition and physical, and possibility of existence active component in fish scales. If the target point have been known, hence which wish known hereinafter is influence of fish weight toward content of fish scales. Result of research on fish scales of carp with 260-3.315 gram in weight is rendemen mean of carp scales from 3,0-5,7 %. Carp scales is over three big component which is protein 29,8-40,9%, water 30,0-36,8%, and dusty 18,7-26,3% ( content of calcium 5,0-8,6%). Other component are fat 0,1-1,0 % and carbohydrate by differences 2,0-5,7 % ( content of chitin 0,4-3,7 %). Carp scales is alkalis, pH 8,0-8,7. Carp scales thickness is 0,02-0,07 mm and diameter range is 0,9-2,1 cm. Carp scales contain alkaloid, carbohydrate, compound of peptide, and amino acid. Carp weight have an effect on chitin rate. Ever greater of carp weight, progressively have lower chitin rate at its scales

Abstract

Existing problem in production process for fulfilling International standard still taking as a problem for Indonesian product, therefore need modification of production process which can match with the commercial standard even also International standard. One of alternative of the production process that is through input of chitosan as impurity absorbent in its extraction, so can get high quality product of jelly for medium, and others. This research aim to application of chitosan as absorbent, to produce jelly with simple method and without chemicals, and characterize of jelly and also compare it to commercial bakto ( difco). Method used in this research is using impurity absorbent by chitosan in extraction process through chitosan filtration which obtainable absorbs can directly acquire jelly extract in order to clear of pollutant omit continued with draining. Result of jelly extract analysis showed characteristic quality of jelly produced which is viscosities 9,1cPs - 12,5cPs ( bakto 17,5cPs), value of TPC 1,8x101 CFU ( bakto 1,1x102 CFU), gel strength 261,26 gF - 297,8 gF with irrigate rate 20,9% - 23% higher than bakto jelly 16,9%. Bacterium growth through TPC test at chitosan treatment 0,1% obtained TPC value is 1,8x101 colony, while TPC value in bakto jelly is 1,1x102 colony. Sulphate value is very determine and difficult enough to decrease it. Sulphate value of jelly of chitosan absorbs treatment showed vary value, from 0,15% until 0,28%, but statistically do not differ reality. Sulphate value is lower than jelly without treatment ( 0,65%) and also is lower than bakto jelly as standard (0,35%)
