Abstract

Blue swimmer crab (Portunus pelagicus) are not only tasty and popular, these animals are the producers of hard shell to protect their body. From its shell waste, we can harvest chitin and process it into chitosan. As blue swimmer crabs waste is easily found in Bangka, we hope that it can be used to solve water pollution caused by heavy metals (Pb, Zn, and Cu) in many open pit areas there. The objective of this study was to evaluate effectivity of blue swimmer crabs’ chitosan in adsorbing heavy metals. This study was conducted from May to December 2010 in Sungailiat. Contaminated water from ex-mining open pit was used in this study. A 0,5%, 1% and 1,5% of chitosan was applied in degrading heavy metal. Research showed that there was a decline of heavy metal content caused by chitosan application. Its adsorbing activity was influenced by pH and temperature. We can benefit from blue swimmer crabs waste shell to improve water quality in ex-mining open pit water.

Abstract

The processing of agar produces 65-70% residu from all raw materials that are used. The residu in form of drugs or solid waste contain macro and micro nutrients which unfortunately have not been used optimally. The waste has a potential to use as an organic fertilizer. The effect of agar waste on growth of mahogany seed and physical and chemical properties of tailing were studied. Compost fertilizer was used as comparison to see the effectiveness of addition agar waste on growth of mahogany. The growth of mahogany seed was observed from height and diameter parameter, while the minerals content were measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The result shown thar the highest growth was achieved when mahogany was treated with 1% agar waste, while the biggest diameter was achieved with 1,5% agar waste. Agar waste treatment improved chemical properties of tailing but has not significant change on physical properties.

Abstract

Fishing port has very important role toward the development of marine fisheries, since fishing port is the economic center from landed fish until the fish to be marketed in the port. The purpose of this study was to determine how far the strategic role of the fishing port to the development of marine fisheries and fishing industries through qualitative descriptive methods. Fishing port as a center of economic activity of fishing in Indonesia, the conditions are very limited. Currently the number of fishing ports incomparable to vast potential of fisheries and the vast marine areas especially in eastern Indonesia. The condition of existing facilities at fishing port most unfit or sub-standard so it is difficult to expect domestic and foreign investors to come invest. Undeveloped fishing port in Indonesia is also due to weak management capabilities along with weak policy support and legal instruments. The strategic role of fishing port to marine fisheries would still not optimal. It indicated, among others, are still not done with good handling of the catch in the fishing port which result in decreased quality and selling price; still not companies that invest in industrial processing because of limited facilities and poor management and availibility of raw materials that are not continoues
