Abstract

In the twenty-first century, many people now live their lives through text messaging. In fact, you can witness people using their cell phones to send character-based messages to their friends, classmates, family members, and coworkers in malls, schools, and pretty much anywhere else. The popularity of this method of communication has increased particularly among young people. One benefit is that technology enables people to speak with others virtually anywhere. Second, it enables individuals to speak softly, which is useful in noisy places like bars, where it would be challenging to have a productive conversation over the phone, or when extraneous communication needs to be done quietly, such as in a school. Thirdly, it combines some of the advantages of phone and email communication by allowing them to communicate both synchronously (i.e., two-way communication occurs concurrently) and asynchronously (i.e., two-way communication is delayed). The usage of acronyms, abbreviations, and other shorthand notations has become commonplace in this technology's creation of a new language form. The focus of this research is on these qualities specifically and how they are used. The aim of this study was to analyze not only how frequently but also how these symbolic expressions are used in relation to the linguistic functions that they signal, which was followed by a number of discoveries.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the discourse of the destructive environment found in the book Indonesian Children's Stories of Choice and explain the presence of destructive environmental discourses as an author's writing strategy. Environmental discourse is a subject of special attention in studying language related to the environment. This study uses the Ecolinguistic theory of the story we lived by Arran Stibbe. Environment discourse is stories that live in a community environment that influences and even determines one's mind. The environment consists of constructive and descriptive discourse. This study focuses on destructive environmental discourse, i.e., disasters containing information that violates or opposes environmental conservation values. The results of this study indicate that destructive environments are one of the authors' writing strategies for punishing characters in stories that contradict the environmental values of intelligence. In addition, the discourse of environmental destruction is created to be the reason for the presence of the discourses of resistance that are constructive and on the side of the wisdom of the environment. This study concludes that the authors use the environmental disasters as part of the message of the story to be known so as not to be done or followed by readers, especially readers from among children.

Abstract

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most widely used tests of English internationally. It is a testing system designed or owned by three partners: University of Cambridge ESOL Examination, British Council, and IDP Australia. This research is to critique the speaking section of the IELTS based on the experience of some test-takers involved as the subjects of this research. The method used was descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques applied were content analysis, interview, and self -reflection. Two IELTS test-takers were interviewed to get their views on the three phases of the speaking section. The authors’ own experiences when taking the IELTS were also reported.  It was found that there are issues with the speaking section of the IELTS. Those issues are its: fairness, authenticity, validity, and the appropriateness of interview as a sole tool to assess speaking ability. This paper also suggests a number of actions to be taken in order to make the speaking section fair, authentic, and valid. Additionally, other ways of assessing speaking ability are proposed.  This paper then reveals what these issues mean to test-takers, examiners, and organizations running IELTS.

Abstract

The poem "This Is Not a Small Voice" by Sonia Sanchez is a moving examination of how ethnic identity is asserted within the American community. Sanchez captures the voice and experiences of African Americans collectively through vivid imagery and evocative language, highlighting the importance of group membership in forming both individual and collective identity. This analysis explores how Sanchez's poem serves as an example of the processes of self-enhancement and uncertainty reduction within the context of ethnic identity, drawing on social identity theory's emphasis on self-categorization and intergroup dynamics. By emphasizing their beauty, skill, aspirations, joy, and love, the poem goes beyond the common narrative of trauma and oppression, highlighting the diverse and multifaceted aspects of their identity. Further, the poem shows how people can assert their ethnic identity to combat harmful stereotypes and promote a sense of belonging by celebrating the strength and love of the African American community. It also provides insights into the varied ways in which ethnic identity is affirmed and communicated. The investigation offers a powerful message of solidarity and pride, reinforcing the idea that every voice within the community contributes to its strength and effect

Abstract

This research focuses on the hero's death in two Shakespearean plays, Othello and Romeo and Juliet. It attempts to answer how the author depicts death and dying in Shakespeare's plays. Benstock and Dickinson, two specialists on death and dying, will provide an answer to the challenge. Benstock divides the death stages into three categories: deceased, moribund, and living-dead. Simultaneously, Dickinson mentions three periods of life: children strove (early life), gazing grain (physical maturity), and setting sun (ageing). This qualitative research uses textual analysis by deeply reading to describe the heroes’ deaths in the plays. The conclusion was that the hero's death is simply a Shakespearean device for revealing the truth about anything. The message of peace is Romeo and Juliet's death as a vehicle for unifying two opposing families, as in Romeo and Juliet's tragedies between Capulet and Montague. It explains why there should be death when peace can be easily achieved. Furthermore, the revelation of truth through death confirms Desdemona's loyalty to Othello.
