Abstract

Code switching and Diglossia’s population can be found in variety places, both formal and informal places. This paper is aimed to report the data analysis relate with diglossia and code switching which is happen to Indonesian Scholar. For many reasons diglossia and code switching are parts of language varieties, and as the unique Indonesian characteristics, because not all countries are getting diglossia phenomenon. It happened only for country that has high and low languages use in their daily interaction. This belief assumes that diglossia and code switching as the varieties of language can be adapted to foster learner’s ability, creativity, and awareness in practicing their language. The study is uses qualitative approach, with descriptive analysis. The purposive sampling is used to gain the data, with 5 questions in short answer form, and 5 questions with close ended question-answer to 16 higher students of 2nd semester from University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta majoring of religious education department. This research uses triangulation to know the validity of the data. The result of this research shows; firstly, bilingualism is a language varieties and happened in Indonesia with highest code-switching population can advocate Indonesia scholar to conserve one of local wisdom, and language varieties.  Secondly, bilingual is familiar to Indonesian Scholar, because most of Indonesian scholars have their own local language. This also shown from their status in some social medias, way of interact; daily language uses, and etc. Thirdly, practicing bilingual is fun, and it could be good habit for them, because in special condition, sometimes their own language helps them to melt the situation in conversation context

Abstract

A gossip as a casual conversation usually occurs in diverse context or a wide range of social situations; has distinct and various topics; and involve an irregular set of participants. The scholars scrutinize that conversation has highly structured activity of which people tacitly realize that there are some basic conventions to follow – such as when to speak or to stay silent and to listen. In this study, I specifically discuss one of the speech genre – a gossip, in Australia English speaking context. The gossip data of the study is taken from the research conducted by Thornburry, Scott, and Slade, Diana (2006). In a discussion, I focus the analysis of the generic structure of the gossip and how it establishes the social function (within) the speech members. Several findings conveyed that: 1) there is a leeway of shifting from one genre to another – e.g. narrative to gossip, within the same participants; 2) conversation can be successful if all the participants aware of and follow the basic conventions – when to talk or to listen, support to judgement or reluctant to the focus of conversation; 3) the genre, e.g. narrative or gossip, could motivate people to leave or to join the conversation which then could establish and reinforce the group membership and maintain the values of the social group.

Abstract

The text of Syair Lebay Guntur contained in the Syair Lebay Guntur text by Raja Ali Haji records the traces of the 'disgraceful' behavior of some Malay people in the past who practiced "Cina Buta" marriages. It is aiming to find muhallil or a proponent to reconcile a couple (wife and husband) who had divorced by triple divorce. Because the problem raised in the poetry is a matter of muhallil, inevitably, its diction appears to be erotic in every verses of the poetry. This study employed the theory of diction and language style with stylistic analysis of Malay to uncover two raised problems they are (1) Can erotic diction contained in SLG be categorized as vulgar pornography? (2) How to interpret the erotic diction? The findings show that the erotic diction in Syair Lebai Guntur poem cannot be categorized as pornography diction, but it rather as a diction adapted to the poem's theme of the practice of "Cina Buta" marriage. The diction considered as an allusion that is intended as teaching values which is not need to be copied by anyone to avoid a disgrace.

Abstract

Self-Assessment is one kind of assessment technique that used by the teacher and conducted by the students in making grade of learning. By using this kind of assessment, students are stimulated to find strength and weakness in learning process, to assess the understanding about material given by the lecturer, and to judge the achievement in Academic writing class. This paper aimed to investigate the roles of self-assessment in Academic Writing Class. Purposive sampling used as sampling technique, where 5 students in Academic Writing Class involved as research sample. Self-assessment questionnaire applied in this research to know the roles of self-assessment in Academic Writing class. Interview also conducted in collecting some additional information regarding the student difficulties in conducting self-assessment. The result of the study showed that the use of self-assessment in Academic Writing class is important to know students strength and weakness in teaching and learning process, to increase the motivation in writing, and to improve the writing performance. This research expected to give contributions in the educational development especially encourages student’s awareness to optimize the use of self-assessment in Academic Writing Class and as consideration for the teachers in conducting assessment process in the teaching and learning activity.

Abstract

Error analysis is a way to investigate errors in the second or foreign language acquisition. This study of error (error analysis) is part of an investigation of the process of English language learning. This research will find the kind of error analysis found in students’ writing composition in the aspects of grammar, punctuation, and spelling and to find the most dominant kind of error analysis found in students’ writing composition of simple future tense. This research used the qualitative research to collect empirical data from the students’ written. By using this method, the data would be accurately collected. The object of the research is fifteen students’ writing composition which taken from 15 students of S1 Accounting STIE AAS Surakarta. The result of analysis shows that the students’ error in writing composition of simple future tense consists of three aspects of writing. First, in grammar, punctuation and spelling. In grammar aspect, there are errors in some points of class word like in noun (21 data or 36,84 %), determiner/article (2 data or 3,51 %), pronoun (1 data or 1,75 %), preposition (15 data or 26,32 %) and verb (18 data or 31,58 %), then the most dominant error in grammar aspect is noun. Second, in punctuation (16 data or 17,20%). Third, in spelling (20 data or 21,51%). Based on the frequency of each aspect of error writing shows that the most dominant error found in the students’ writing composition is in the aspect of grammar as 57 data or 61,29.

Abstract

Malaysia gained its independence on 31 August 1957 after the British Empire have fully relinquished its colonisation on the land. As with any newly independent polity, one of the ways for Malaysia, a multi-ethnic country, tries to establish its national identity is by establishing a language policy. This paper will examine Malaysia’s language policy planning using Bernard Spolsky’s (2004) model proposed in his book ‘Language Policy’ published by Cambridge University Press in 2004. In the book, Spolsky (2004) theorised that there are four major motivations that influences the decision of a country’s language policy planning. These four major motivations are, the sociolinguistic situation of a country, a country’s national identity or ideology, the effects of English as the language of a wider communication, and minority linguistic rights. In the case of Malaysia, each of Spolsky’s (2004) four forces does seem to have an impact on Malaysia’s language policy planning and the forces are very intertwined with each other. Malay as the dominant ethnic group in a sense has influenced the language chosen as the national language. However, being a diverse country, this decision does pose an issue at creating a national identity among its people. At the same time, English being the past colonial language and at present, the language for wider communication has caused Malaysia’s medium of instruction in public education policy to be seen as oscillating back and forth between Malay and English. On the other hand, minority linguistic rights in Malaysia has a long way to go since only certain indigenous languages are taught as elective subjects in schools.

Abstract

For the foreigner students, Time aspects (usually can be referred as aspects) in Mandarin is a difficult grammar to be grasped. Indonesian student is no exception. There is only a little bit of similarities exist between Mandarin and Indonesian time aspects. For the example from the semantics point of view: Mandarin “le” and Indonesian “sudah” both of them can modify verbs to indicate an action that have been finished. Mandarin “zhe” and Indonesian “sedang” both of them also modify verbs indicating action that still happen. Mandarin “guo” and Indonesian “pernah” both of them also can modify verbs indicating action that had been happened, etc. Except these similarities, Mandarin and Indonesian time aspects have a lot of differences. For the example, in Mandarin time aspects are usually placed after the verbs, while in Indonesian time aspects placed before the verbs. Mandarin time aspects can only modify verb, while Indonesian can modify verb and adjective. For example, in Mandarin the action is already happened, it can’t use the adverb of frequency “chang-chang”. Eg “ta chang-chang shang xue chi dao le”. We can’t write it like this. But In Indonesian “sudah” can use adverb of frequency “sering” in sentences, eg : “dia sudah sering terlambat”. This sentences in Indonesian is correct. So, this paper will be analyzed the grammar of Mandarin aspect “le, zhe, guo” with Indonesian aspect “sudah, sedang, pernah”, compared both of them, and find the differences between both of them.

Abstract

This research investigates the students’ perceptions of creating videos to engage them in speaking. This research employed a descriptive method. The population of this research was the third year students of Social Program of SMAN 1 Soppeng in the academic year 2017/2018. This research used purposive sampling, taking XII IPS 1 totaling 25 students as the sample. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and interview. The results of this research showed that creating videos has many advantages in engaging the students to speak English. Recording the conversation or dialogue is a fun activity for them although they feel nervous for the first few minutes, a few minutes later, they feel very much enjoying recording their activities and performance with their friends. Creating videos seems to be interesting and motivating the students to speak fluently. The students stated that they can see their expressions, gestures, and their mistakes by replaying their videos, so it will make them aware of their weakness and their mistakes. It creates self-learning and self-evaluation for the students. It makes the students motivated to improve their speaking skills. Thus, it is concluded that the students have positive perceptions on the effectiveness of creating videos in engaging them to speak English.

Abstract

AbstractThis study focuses its investigation on the problems of stress placement in English words made by Indonesian learners of English (ILE). The subjects of the study were the students of English Literature Study Program Universitas Negeri Makassar (N = 66, 20 or 30.30% males and 46 or 69.69 females). Results of the study show that the Indonesian learners of English (ILE) were able to put the an acute accent (´) illustrating the primary stress on monosyllabic words (one syllable words) easily; two syllable words, except for word permit; three syllable words, except for the word determine; words with suffixes in reading test; words with prefixes, except for word imbalance; compound words, except for word sunrise; noun phrases; stress on verbs and stress on nouns. The ILE were not able to put an acute accent (´) illustrating the main stress on polysyllabic words with suffixes in written test, but the ILE has excellent competence for the words objectivity and disagreement. The ILE therefore tended to put the correct stress placement on reading test than on written test. The ILE often mistress the words in polysyllabic words, like: permit, determine, imbalance, accuracy, anchorage, etc.  Additionally, descriptive statistics shows the percentage of correct and incorrect pronunciation made by Indonesian Learners of English (ILE) in recording and written test. The educational implication of this study is that the practice for stress placement of words, ranging from monosyllabic words to polysyllabic words needs to be taught in English learning and teaching process in the classroom setting. This in keeping with the results of the questionnaires that ‘Learning correct stress placement needs large portion in EFL classroom’ with a mean 3.6061 and SD = .87493 and ‘Correct stress placement on words is important’ with a mean of 4.1515 and SD = .68483. Abstract

In social life there are always rules, norms and values that organize the behavior or patterns of society. Yet some members of society cannot fulfill the rights and responsibilities in accordance with the norms and rules. Unequal rights and obligations in social life is the reason why there are social classes in society. It means that the people who have wealth and someone who can carry out many rights and obligations will be in the upper classes and those one with little or even no rights and responsibilities will be grouped in the lower classes. This research therefore aims to explain the phenomenon of social classes in the novel Pamela, and social condition in 18th century life in England that reflected in the novel. This research used descriptive  qualitative  method.  It was conducted by describing the data within literary work which were related to the topic of the research. The analysis of the data was done using sociology of literature approach put forward by Swingewood and Laurenson. The results of this research show that during England 18th century, social discrimination has become a major problem in the community. Social status become the standard of interaction in the society. Success and prestige of a person are measured based on his/her birth. Nobody wants to be at the bottom of the social hierarchy. The character of Pamela never think that money and power is everything. She never despise her identity as a lower class citizen who is always treated unequally in the society.
