Abstract

Military coups are nothing new in the 21st century. Myanmar's military overthrew the existing democratic government in a coup d'état to gain power. Opium is the key behind the Myanmar military coup taking place in 2021. This article was written using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. News in the mass media, both print and online, is also a source. The thirst for power has influenced the existing military so that actions without morals are committed. Many people consider that the coup carried out by the Myanmar military was an ordinary coup that was normalized because of the thirst for power. But behind that thirst for power lies a bigger plan for profit. The public needs to see the real reason behind the coup carried out by the Myanmar military in 2021 so that it can clearly and structuredly understand the coup that was carried out in 2021 which further put Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest Keywords: Opium, Government, Military, Power, Coup

Abstract

Palm Oil plantations in Indonesia are experiencing a trend of land expansion. The land expansion makes Indonesia, the country with the largest palm oil plantation land in the world, and at the same time the world's largest producer of palm oil. Land expansion is carried out by Government Plantation, Smallholders Plantation, and Private Plantation. However, when observed in more detail, land expansion from Government Plantation has not shown a significant increase and has recently decreased. Seeing the decline in the land area of Government Plantation amid the trend of land expansion of palm oil plantations in Indonesia, this paper argues that liberalization encourages the government to reduce its economic activity in the palm oil plantation sector, and provides opportunities for the market to develop Smallholders Plantation and Private Plantation. Liberalization encouraged the expansion of plantation land nationally, but limited the increase in the land area of Government Plantation. Abstract

This paper discusses the role of young people in realizing gender equality in the midst of a strong patriarchal culture in two regions of Indonesia, namely East Nusa Tenggara and Papua. The strong patriarchal culture in East Nusa Tenggara and Papua causes women to experience violence in the home to the household. From the data obtained, domestic violence (KDRT) that occurred in East Nusa Tenggara was caused by the existence of belis in NTT and the influence of dowry on Papuan women so that there was a sense of male authority over these women. The rate of violence has increased over the years and this requires a serious subscription both from the government and from the community. This paper uses qualitative methods with case studies, interviews and documentation studies through journals, books and research results. To minimize violence against women, it is necessary to have the role of young people in the family, education and society through the socialization of the importance of gender equality in the family and society. Abstract

This paper examines Indonesia’s policy response during the outbreak of the rebellion of the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PRRI) and the Universal Struggle Charter (Permesta) and the involvement of the United States in it. By using the omnibalancing theory, this paper aims to investigate more deeply Indonesia’s contradictory responses, which have been given special attention in previous studies. This study uses the historical study method which consist of four stages, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. This study shows that the normalization path taken by Indonesia after the US involvement in the PRRI/Permesta rebellion was a tactical strategy made to ensure regime survival which was being hit by a crisis of legitimacy and threatened by state disintegration. Omnibalancing is carried out in two ways, i.e. internal balancing in the form of eradicating PRRI/Permesta elements and rearranging the political system to create Guided Democracy and external balancing in the form of normalizing relations with the United States after its intervention is publicly known. Sukarno’s omnibalancing regime then succeeded in ensuring the survival of government in power and annihilating the PRRI/Permesta while also maintaining relations with the United States.

Abstract

This paper examines the implications of China's massive foreign direct investment (FDI) in Cambodia through the lens of Dependency Theory. Drawing on the theoretical perspectives of Theotonio Dos Santos and Fernando Henrique Cardoso, this study analyses how China's capital hegemony and foreign financing have led to Cambodia's dependence on Chinese investment. The findings reveal that the influx of Chinese FDI, while contributing to economic growth and infrastructure development, has also resulted in negative consequences across political, socio-cultural, environmental, and socio-economic dimensions. The dominance of Chinese investment has undermined Cambodia's governance, eroded local autonomy, exacerbated corruption, marginalized local communities, and caused environmental degradation. This study argues that Cambodia's reliance on foreign capital, compounded with inadequate governance, has perpetuated its dependency on China, compromising its sustainable development and national interests. This study emphasizes the importance for Cambodia to reduce its dependence on foreign investment, strengthen domestic economic capacity, and prioritize national interests through sound governance and regulatory mechanisms to mitigate the negative impacts of FDI.

Abstract

This research will examine the reasons why Indonesia has not ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) into its Tobacco Control policy in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the largest tobacco producing countries in the world with a large number of smokers and a large tobacco industry. A study by the Indonesian Ministry of Health found that tobacco-related deaths increased from 190,260 in 2010 to 240,618 in 2013. Initially, Indonesia was one of the 20 full drafting members for the formation of the FCTC since its initial formulation in 1996. However, until now Indonesia has become one - the only country in Southeast Asia that has not ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) into its Tobacco Control policy in Indonesia. Using Robert Putnam's Two Level Games Theory, the aim is to see the interaction between level 1 (international level) and level Il (domestic level). The research results show that the Indonesian government did not ratify the FCTC because the level II win-set size was small and did not overlap. Clearer national economic considerations for the tobacco sector as well as strong lobbying from related interest groups are the main factors in rejecting ratification. Therefore, this paper seeks to explain the research question: "Why does Indonesia not ratify the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)?". This research uses secondary data collection methods, namely through books, journals and documentation.

Abstract

As the research on moderate Islam is very state-centric, we need an alternative understanding by exploring the role of non-state actors in the issue. This article aims to provide the view by identifying the transnational religious actors from Indonesia, especially the Nahdlatul Ulama, in promoting moderate Islam on the global stage amid ongoing bad image of Indonesia and that religion circulated among global citizens because of terrorism. The research consists of two layers of analysis. First, we identify several cases of terrorism and radicalisation affecting Indonesians, and to the extent they also impacted Indonesia's image. Second, we explore the role of the Special Branch of Nahdlatul Ulama (PCINU) in the United Kingdom, that is actively constructing the message that Islam is not what people perceive. It is worth noting that PCINU has been in more than 30 countries, one of them is in the UK. The writers of this article chose the PCINU UK as representing the Western world in which people have a limited understanding of moderate Islam, moreover when there was the 9/11 attack affecting negatively on Islam. To analyze it further, we conducted in-depth interviews with PCINU UK and used library research by collecting data from journals, reports, and news related to the topic. It found that while terrorism has contributed negatively to Islam and Indonesia’s reputation, it is worth noting that PCINU in the UK plays a pivotal role in neutralizing the issue. NU is essential to bring another image of Indonesia and Islam that is modern and dynamic. Key words: transnational religious actor, multi-track diplomacy, nahdlatul ulama.
