Abstract

Scaffolded Reading Experience (SRE) is a set of pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading activities which is specifically designed to assist the students in successfully reading, understanding, and enjoying the English text. The objectives of the research were to identify: (1) whether SRE is more effective than Direct Instruction (DI) to teach reading; (2) whether students who have low reading anxiety have better reading ability than those who have high reading anxiety; and (3) whether there is an interaction effect between teaching methods and students’ reading anxiety on the students’ reading ability. The research method used in this research was experimental method. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMKN 6 Surakarta, Central Java. The sample of the research was X Pm 1 and X Pm 2. Each of them consisted of 30 students. The students in X Pm 2 were as experimental class who were taught using scaffolded reading experience and the students in X Pm 1 were as control class who were taught using direct instruction. The data were in the form of quantitative data and they were taken from a test. They were the scores of students’ reading test after having eight times treatments for each class. The researcher analyzed the data using ANOVA or analysis of variance and Tukey test. Based on the result of data analysis, the research findings are: (1) SRE is more effective than direct instruction to teach reading; (2) the students who have low reading anxiety have better reading skill than the students who have high reading anxiety; and (3) there is an interaction effect between teaching methods (SRE and DI) and students’ reading anxiety on the students’ reading ability.

(2) to determine the effect of the use of learning media on the ability to write a descriptive text at SMA Swasta in Kecamatan Balaraja. (3) to determine the effect on the ability of learning motivation to write descriptive text at SMA Swasta in Kecamatan Balaraja. Sampling technique is done by cluster sampling. Total sample of research for visual learning media projection of 20 students and 20 students to study nonproyektion media. Measurement instrument used to measure the ability to write tests in narrative form. To get the data from the motivation to learn to use the instrument of motivation. The method used is quasi-experimental research design 2 x 2 factorial ANOVA Analysis using two lanes on the significant level of 0.05. The findings of the researcher show that: (1) there is no significant effect of interaction learning media and motivation towards the ability to write descriptions . F-count = 0.390 <F table = 4.08 and sig. = 0.536> 0.05. (2) the ability to write a descriptive text of students taught using visual media projections using visual media nonproyeksi (mean = 74.3), with the F test = 5.635> Ftabel = 4.08 and sig. = 0.023 <0.05. (3) the ability to write a description of the students who have high motivation to learn (mean = 77.8) is higher than the ability to write descriptions that have low learning motivation (mean = 73.65), with Fhitung = 11.949> F table = 4.08 and sig. = 0.001 <0.05.

Abstract

A compound verb is made up of two or more words that function as a single verb. A compound verb can be a phrasal verb or a prepositional verb that behaves either lexically or syntactically as a single verb. Compounding or composition is the process of combining two free morphemes into one word and form a new meaning. This compound is different from the phrase. The phrase is a combination of words and formed through a process of syntax. The compound formed a meaning, while the phrase formed more than one meaning. This compound can be divided based on the morphological form and the relationship of the components. Morphologically, compound words are divided into (1) a basic compound word ; (2) a compound word affixed ; and (3) a compound word repeatedly . This compound was a construction line between morphological and syntactic constructions. A compound word is two or more words that have undergone a process of compounding, which then represents a new understanding.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to determine the relationship between (1) reading habit and listening skill in English, (2) vocabulary mastery and listening skill in English, and (3) reading habit together with vocabulary mastery and the students’ English listening skill. The research was conducted in As-syafi’iyah Islamic Senior High School (SMA Islam As-syafi’iyah 02 Pondok Gede). The population of the research is all students in As-syafi’iyah Islamic Senior High School. The sample used 30 students who selected randomly. The technique for analyzing the data was the statistical technique of correlation and regression. The results of the research are as follows: (1) there is a positive correlation between reading habit and listening skill, with coefficient correlation (rx1y) = 0,646 and the regression equation Ŷ = 5,742 + 0,152X1. The coefficient of determination yielded is (r²) = 0,416. It means that 41,6% of the listening skill in English is determined by reading habit. (2) there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening skill in English, with coefficient correlation (rx2y) = 0,764 and the regression equation Ŷ = 6,161 + 0,657X2. The coefficient of determination yielded is (r²) = 0,583. It means that 58,3% of the listening skill in English is determined by vocabulary mastery. (3) there is a positive correlation between reading habit, vocabulary mastery and listening skill, with coefficient correlation (Ry1.2) = 0,791 and the regression equation Ŷ = 3,613 + 0,063X1 + 0,510X2. The coefficient of determination yielded is (R²) = 0,626. It means that 62,6% of the students’ English Listening skill is determined by reading habit and vocabulary mastery. Therefore, from the result of this research it can be concluded that students’ English listening skill can be enhanced by increasing students’ reading habit and vocabulary mastery either individually or simultaneously.
