Abstract

In this presentation I firstly review different approaches and methods that have been used to teaching English. Based on these approaches and methods, our understanding of how students learn their second language has been greatly enhanced. However, students in the 21st Century have more demands and needs than previously and we now have to use more progressive pedagogies to teach them. Some features of a progressive pedagogical approach are: learners are active participants; teachers are facilitators and guides; there is shared decision-making by the group; learning is seen as part of real-life experiences; and learning is conceptualized as a spiral where knowledge is constructed through experience and social interaction (Peters, 2012). This type of pedagogical approach is student-centred and lends itself to the promotion of learner autonomy. By way of an example I will talk about a university level English for Science course I have been involved in developing and teaching over the past five years. Keywords: Progressive pedagogies, learner autonomy, project learning.

He always uses Madura culture and na-ture as the identity in his poems. The imagery, alliteration, simile, and other figurative languages refer to Madura culture and nature can be analyzed as the basic elements in D.Zawawi Imron’s poems. Thus, the sociology of writer is one of an appropriate approach to comprehend D.Zawawi Imron’s poems. Because by using sociology of writer, it can uncover the relationship between the writer’s/the poet’s life background, the creative process, and the content of the poems. Abstract

English teachers from time to time have been trying multiple methodologies to teach ESL. They are ranged as Grammar Translation Method,The Direct Method, The Audio-Lingual Method, The Silent Way, Desuggestopedia, Community Language Learning, Total Physical Response, Communicative Language Teaching, Content-based to Task-based, and Participatory Approaches. Thesemethodologies are based on both teacher centered approach and student centered approach. LarsenFreeman views that methods serve as a foil for reflection that can aid teachers in bringing to conscious awareness the thinking that underlie their actions and also they are able to see why they are attracted to certain methods and repelled by others. But if we look into the outcome of the learning we feel and notice that the learning is not validated by these pedagogies and the learners are left to uncertain situation and are not sure whether they would ever learn ESL and use it in their daily life situations, perfectly and according to the context. This paper aims to discuss those strategies which the researcher has been using in her classrooms for past few years and found valid and outcomebased. These class based methodologies have been termed as Process-oriented Strategies, are discussed in the paper and the outcomes are shown as to how the students actually learnt ESL and are effectively using that in their daily lives. To consolidate these approaches, a sample of twenty learners was randomly selected for this study to assess the outcome of the learning of ESL. The learner centered approach was adopted throughout the session. The result showed that through process-oriented methods learners were able to use English in their daily lives very effectively and spontaneously.

Abstract

PROMOTING MULTILINGUAL READER IN EFL CLASSROOMS: A PORTRAIT ON THE READING STRATEGIES Lala Bumala

Abstract

This paper reports on how English as a Foreign Language Learner (EFL learners) explored their reading strategis when dealing with L1 and L2 texts. The destination of reading, a notion called comprehension, is by no means is a complicated process. This complexity can only be simplified only if a reader can employ the available reading strategies. The capacity to employ and develop the 20 reading strategies, as suggested by Grabe and Stoller (2002), can be injected both in L1 and L2 context. In EFL reading context, comprehension must first take place in students’ first language (L1), and eventually lead to comprehension in their second language (L2) (Alwasilah 2012; 2001). From this perspective, EFL classroom now serves as a ‘sacred’ site for promoting multilingual reader in which students are encouraged to demonstrate engagement dynamically both in their L1 and L2. From the 20 strategies employed by two selected respondents, four strategies seem to be a big puzzle for EFL leerners: focus on generic structure, intertextuality, inferences, and discourse markers. This, however, should be seen as a milestone rather than as a weakness. The more strategies employed, the more strategic the readers will be. This is the phenomenon captured in EFL reading classroom presented in this study. Keywords: L1 and L2 reading, strategic reading, comprehension.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of the think-aloud on L2 reading in relation with the type of task Iranian EFL readers engage in while reading activity. In so doing, 360 students were selected and assigned to experimental and comparison groups. The subjects in experimental groups were instructed to verbalize whatever they were thinking as their thought naturally came to mind while reading and doing the assigned tasks. The results indicated that the instructional procedure had contributed to the improvement of the EFL students’ reading comprehension. By and large, the analysis of think-aloud protocol can provide language learners with a means for monitoring their reading process. Moreover, it gives an opportunity for language teachers to become more sensitized to various comprehension problems that students encounter and offers clues to understand potential weakness that students may have I their L2 reading.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ critical thinking as reflected in their argumentative writing in one state university in Serang, Banten. This study used a case study research design which employed two data collection techniques, i.e. the documentation of students’ essays and interview. The data were, then, analyzed based on the theory of Critical Thinking (CT) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) which were validated by triangulation. The study revealed two findings related to the research questions. First, results of the text analysis showed that despite their ability to show their critical thinking in their writing, students’ texts still showed that the verbalization of the students’ critical thinking was less sophisticated and explicit. Second, as the interview data revealed, students’ inability occurred due to their limited knowledge of the issue and lack of knowledge in applying their critical thinking in writing particularly in the expository genre. The findings above suggest that the students need more guidance so that they have a better command of some critical thinking components to develop their critical thinking, especially their capacity to argue, to state opinions and stance explicitly and carefully. All these may also reflect the urgency to provide the students in the site with a great deal of assistance in a writing process and efforts to expose students to some teaching programs with a view to improving their critical thinking in the future.  ABSTRACT
