Abstract

The French haute couture industry has a long, deeply rooted history of systematically controlling women’s bodies through the aesthetics of the beauty process. This study examines how representations of the female body are presented as disciplined and commercialized objects in a collection of short stories written by Madeleine Chapsal in Les Chiffons du rêve, situating them within the socio-political context of the French fashion industry. Drawing on Wendy Harcourt’s theory of the politics of the body and Michel Foucault’s concept of “docile bodies”, the author has selected five short stories for analysis using close reading techniques. This study will identify three mechanisms or perspectives referring to Harcourt regarding interconnected forms of power: institutional subordination, commodification within luxury capitalism, and the internalization of aesthetic norms which over time slowly but surely influence the transformation of many women into individuals who ultimately discipline themselves. This study posits that the cold narrative style presented by Chapsal, the depiction of women’s bodies and “broken” models, alongside the abundant symbolism employed, serves as a function of critique and resistance against the historically entrenched patriarchal system that has been implemented and normalized within the world of haute couture from the outset, particularly regarding women and models. A key highlight that emerges is this: although a critique of oppression is presented, the narrative, as written and portrayed, simultaneously reproduces and normalizes the process of bodily compliance among women and models in every single chapter throughout the entire collection.

Abstract

Framed from a qualitative content analysis, this study aims to examine cultural representations and the promotion of intercultural communicative competence within three Kurikulum Merdeka textbooks: Work in Progress (Grade 10), English for Change (Grade 11), and Life Today (Grade 12). The findings indicate that cultural products are more prominently represented than persons, perspectives, and practices. In terms of Kachru’s three circles, expanding circle cultures—primarily Indonesian cultures—are overwhelmingly represented, whereas inner circle and outer circle cultures receive comparatively limited attention. Regarding ICC dimensions, the textbooks show stronger emphasis on the development of knowledge than attitudes and critical cultural awareness. Moreover, the skills of interpreting/relating and discovery/interaction are insufficiently addressed. The study recommends a more balanced representation of cultural aspects across the three circles, along with a more systematic integration of intercultural communicative competence. This study provides empirical evidence of the gap between the goals of the Kurikulum Merdeka and the implementation of the curriculum in the textbooks. It provides practical guidance for textbook developers, curriculum designers, and educators to create more balanced materials that systematically integrate ICC, especially the interpreting/relating and discovery/interaction dimensions, which are still underdeveloped, enabling Indonesian students to develop both cultural roots and global intercultural competencies.

Abstract

This study aims to break down how the process of transcendence (Transzendenz), as conceptualized by Karl Jaspers, operates in Hermann Hesse's novel Siddhartha. The analysis focuses on the moment of Siddhartha's encounter with Gautama Buddha, which has been proven to be the apt moment of transcendence. The existentialist pattern in Siddhartha's character strengthens Jaspers' argument regarding two important elements that enable transcendence (Transzendenz): limit situations (Grenzsituationen) and the encompassing (das Umgreifende). Through in-depth data analysis, three existentialist concepts were found, composed of four direct quotations from the conversation. All of them represent stages in Siddhartha's achievement of transcendence, which include awareness of one's limitations, rejection of dogma and external teachings, and an understanding of the importance of personal experience in finding the true meaning of life. This study contributes to the field of literature, particularly to the discourse of existentialism. Jaspers' concept offers a clear and concrete account of how transcendence is realized and narratively interpreted.
