Abstract

SWELL (Social-Interactive Writing for English Language Learners) is one of several techniques that can be used to improve the students‟ writing ability. It is known that many EFL (English For-eign Language) learners have problems in composing the essay. Therefore, the study of how SWELL can enhance the students‟ skill in writing narrative texts is important to be conducted. Moreover, none of researchers tries to reveal the use of SWELL in the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language. The purposes of this study are to describe how the teacher ap-plies SWELL in teaching writing narrative texts to eighth graders and the effects of using SWELL on the students‟ narrative writings. Focused on the enhancement of students‟ skill in writing narrative texts, this classroom action research was conducted at MTsN Model Treng-galek, East Java. To collect the data, observation checklist and students‟ tests were employed. The research showed that in applying SWELL in writing narrative texts, teacher did three ac-tivities, including opening activities, main activities, and closing activities. Meanwhile, based on the overall mean scores of the students‟ writings that improved from preliminary study to cycle II; 69.2, 76.41, and 76.47 and significant improvement on the students‟ class mastery of final drafts from preliminary study to cycle II; 35.3%, 76.5%, and 94.12%, there is a significant improvement on the students‟ writing ability that includes content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics by using this technique. To conclude, SWELL was successfully applied to improve the eighth graders‟ writing narrative texts. Key Words: SWELL, writing, and narrative text.

Abstract

Good language learner studies show that attending to form is associated with successful learning. This paper reports interviews with three university English majors who had been the best students in a talk show program and got a score band of 7 or beyond in IELTS. The interviewees regarded text memorization and imitation as the most effective methods of learning English. They had been initially forced to use these methods but gradually came to appreciate them. The practice enabled them to attend to and learn collocations and sequences, to borrow these sequences for productive use, to improve pronunciation, and to develop the habit of attending to details of language in the context of language input. The paper concludes that such practice enhances noticing and rehearsal and hence facilitates second language acquisition.

Abstract

This article attempts to present a profile of two successful English language learners who are found to hold strong learning styles. Learning styles are considered as the factors that not only have great influence but are also embedded to the attempt for selecting the strategies used to attack the perplexing learning problems or tasks. The learning strategies as the factor leads a successful learning should be channeled into other factors that juxtapose with this factor. The present article would present how certain affective and cognitive domains of learning styles have made particular learning strategies become effective. By means of a multi case study, that describes two different phenomena and compares them for reducing the risk of error, the present study tries to give more contribution towards the study on the Good Language Learner that has been so far being the concern of many scholars. Such an investigation would help other learners of the same traits or endowment to adopt as well as adapt the strategy. Besides, this can be used as a model for strategy training that is hosted to help less fortunate learners who study English.

Abstract

Second language acquisition has become a big issue in recent years and it leads to the study of transfer. As there are many problems faced by the lecturers deal with the students’ pronunciation, then this paper is aimed at revealing and describing the errors in pronouncing English sounds made by the English learners because of the negative transfer from their first language (L1). Mix method was used in this study, it began with the qualitative one and then to know the percentage of each data, quantitative one was applied. The data were got from the recording of speaking activities and interview and then it was transcribed into broad transcription. This study does not include the narrow transcription, therefore no suprasegmental features found in this paper. The results of this study revealed that most of the students made some errors in pronouncing English sounds which they cannot found in their first language such as the sound /æ/, /∫/, /θ/, /ð/, and /ʒ /. The result is hoped to be able to give some input to the English teacher and lecturer on the common errors made by the students in pronouncing English sounds and lead them to improve their teaching methods in order to help their students in pronouncing new sounds found in the target language. Abstract

The paper is to identify the factors of unstranslatability, to describe the strategies applied by translator in handling the problem, and to find out the effect of unstranslatability to the readibility of the text, and the readibilit level of the text. The anaysis shows that there are two factors of untranslatability: linguistics and culture. Cultural factor is more dominant because the original text deals with the Arabic culture and the religion issue, islamic religion. In solving the untranslatability problem, translator applied a contrastive analysis by : (1) italizing the untranslatable concepts; (2) replacing it by the similar concept in the target language (including the spelling modification); and (3) describing the concept by putting annotation, clarifying phrase and other things to clarify. Based on the questionnaire, the translated text is proved to have a high readibility level. However, there is a tendency that the book is more appropriate for the readers who are used to the religious terms, and not so for the common readers.

Abstract

The roles of learners in language teaching are not only the receiver of the information but also the providers, collaborators, and decision-makers. In this case, the learners can provide and collaborate with the teacher to decide what materials and language competences the learners need to learn and achieve. Thus, the learning materials and tasks should represent the students’ needs that facilitate them to use the language in the real world. One of the materials that need to take into account is an authentic text. Authentic text as informa-tional input for interested participants, for building interpersonal relationship between the interested partici-pants, and for communicating meaning (Widodo: 2012). In line with this, the students can contribute an authentic text to be designed for interactive speaking task. The interactive speaking task I propose: compre-hending the text, making power point presentation from the text, explaining (playing a role as a speakers and participants in the seminar), responding to the explanation (questioning and answering). To design the ma-terial and the task using authentic text has to consider the eight principles as the basic theoretical framework for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) materials design. Abstract

This research is done by using cohesive harmony analysis. It is to describe how the two letter texts written by native (TIME) and non-native (The Jakarta Post) senders can be rated coherent and readable by the native readers. Then to compare how the two non-native letter texts can enjoy the same degree of linguistic coherence as the two native ones. Based on the analyses, the two letter texts in English newspaper written by native and non-native are judged and determined coherent by native readers. the texts are readable and comprehendable by general readers. The evidences of the coherence are those two-letter texts have fulfilled all the measures of coherence in cohesive harmony analyses.

Abstract

This study entitled "The Language Maintenance of Mother Tongue in Tourism Area, Ubud". The background of this study is departed from having seen the phenomenon of a rapid tourism development in Ubud. The arrival of tourists, both domestics and foreigners, would have an impact on the interaction be-tween tourists and local communities. The interaction is not merely the culture, but also in terms of commu-nication of how the language is being used. The use of language in daily communication is definitely become an interesting aspect to be discussed because Ubud is known as a multicultural region; some people may think that Ubud is a bule village similar to Kuta. The objective of this study is to determine whether mother tongue is still being used in Ubud, Gian-yar or had it replaced by the foreign language. In addition, this research conducted to find out the strategies used by the people of Ubud to maintain the sustainability of mother-tongue language in the region. The method used for this research is a field research. The research conducted by a non-participatory observation; researchers act to make observations and not directly involved in the interaction at the time of the study. Research techniques that used are documentations, records and depth interviews. The results ana-lyzed by approach which was proposed by Fasold (1972). It is also supported by Fishman’s approach; both concern with language maintenance. The interview results are expected to answer strategies used by speakers of the local community in preserving the language. The presentation of the data described in qualitative de-scriptive method. Abstract

Puisi dikatakan sebagai karya sastra yang palimng unik karena tercipta dari kontemplasi terdalam penyairnya. Namun, dalam memahami maknanya, kita mesti mangaitkan puisi dengan riwayat pengarang serta kondisi yang menjadi konteks pencipa karya.                                        Thomas Hardy adalah salah satu penyair terbaik dalam sejarah. Ia dikenal karena gayanya yang fatalis dan pesimis. Salah satu karyanya yang kental dengan warna itu adalah The Darkling Thursh, yang merupakan salah satu master piece. Puisi tersebut ditulis pada akhir abad ke-18 dan masa awal abad baru. Tradisi ini membawa banyak perubahan. Hardy mancoba melukiskan keraguannya dihadapkan dengan zaman baru itu. Segala nad yang hadir dalam puisinya membawa kita pada pandangannya yang begitu pesimis. Tulisan ini bertujuan menggambarkan nada pesimisme yang dilukiskan melalui karya itu.

Abstract

This research is an attempt to reveal the life of pioneers in America in Cooper’s novels “The Deerslayer”, “The Pathfinder”, “The Last of the Mohicans”, “The Pioneers” and “The Prairie”. There are two objectives of the research, namely the reasons why the pioneers move to the West and what things that they have to have in order to be successful in the West.Using literary sociology, the two objectives of the research are discussed in the five novels as the main sources and the criticisms and the social condition in America as the secondary sources.The result of the research shows that the pioneers in America have some reasons so that they move to the West.  They want to have wide land to settle.  Besides, they want to cultivate the land to fulfill their needs.  Other pioneers have to move to the West because they have to defend the British territory.  In order to be successful, the pioneers have to have the hard skills and soft skills.  They have to be able to hunt the wild animals, to use weapons to defend their properties and themselves.  They also have to have self reliance, hard work, spirit, and discipline as well as vigilance.
