Abstract

This study examines language-based social exclusion endured by migrant students from East Indonesia in Java. It applies and enriches Bracic's (2020, 2022) multidimensional exclusion cycle model by highlighting language's central role as a key dimension of exclusion in the Indonesian context, an area not yet fully elaborated within her theoretical framework. Analysis reveals that, beyond difficulties in formal and vernacular Indonesian, these students encounter discriminatory racial prejudice. This discrimination stems from a historical javanization process implemented by the Sukarno and Soeharto governments, leading to language hierarchization, structural racism, and racial discrimination. This research argues that language, ideology, and power are intertwined, perpetuating the exclusion cycle against these marginalized groups. This study used literature review and semi-structured interviews, and found the need for multidimensional interventions targeting language hierarchies, racial prejudice, and structural racism to break this exclusion cycle and foster equitable inclusion.

Abstract

The background of this research is the reality of gender injustice and marginalization of women that are still strongly reflected in Indonesian literary works. The purpose of this research is to identify the resistance strategies carried out by female characters in facing subordination, stereotypes, marginalization, and symbolic violence that are legitimized by patriarchal social, political, and cultural structures. The method used is descriptive qualitative with semiotic analysis and content analysis techniques, where the main data are narratives in the two novels that show the dynamics of injustice and women's resistance. The type of data used is in the form of text excerpts or narratives that describe women's resistance to the patriarchal system. The results of the study show that women's resistance in both novels is not always confrontational, but is also manifested through symbolic strategies, emotional solidarity, affirmation of the right to education, and negotiation of meaning in domestic and public spaces. Female characters such as Ratu Mas Nyowo, Ratu Kalinyamat, and Rani Suhita in Penangsang Tembang Rindu Dendam fight for their position and dignity amidst political intrigue and power, while Sri in Pada Sebuah Kapal displays a more personal and emotional resistance to household pressures and societal expectations. This research provides theoretical contributions to the development of feminist and semiotic studies of literature, by showing how women as active subjects are able to negotiate identity, role, and influence amidst the limitations of the patriarchal system. Socially, this research highlights the importance of awareness of gender injustice and women's resistance in society, which can inspire social change in a modern context.

Abstract

The K-Pop industry as a form of subculture within popular culture, offers more than just analysis focused on artists and their music, but also consider the aspect of it fans. In Indonesia, K-Pop is one of the most popular genres and receives high enthusiasm, especially due to the participation of it fans in promoting it by consuming and producing K-Pop-themed cultural texts. This study explores the Indonesian K-Pop fans as prosumers within the cultural industries through the practice of textual poaching. Using a qualitative approach with constructivist paradigm, data were collected through interviews with four K-Pop fans actively involved in producing fan art, fan fiction, and fan edits. The prosumer theories of Alvin Toffler and Henry Jenkins are applied to examine the blurred lines between producers and consumers in participatory culture. Findings reveal that fans do not merely consume cultural texts but also reconstruct and redistribute new meanings based on personal preferences, demonstrating their creative autonomy. Although some gain material benefits, most of these activities are carried out voluntarily and are regarded as hobbies, so they are unaware of the subtle element of free labour in the activities they engage in. The study supports the perspective of French cultural sociologists that the cultural industry is ambivalent, contested, and open to bottom-up innovation (grassroots creativity). Recommendations for further research could use a critical paradigm and specifically examine fans at the worker level, to better align with theories in the cultural industries.

Abstract

Villages along the Cimande River are prone to hydrogeological disasters, such as floods and landslides, and have become increasingly densely populated with residential and industrial areas. Toponymic research in this area reveals local knowledge about river hydrology dynamics and can inform culture-based disaster mitigation strategies. This study examines the structure and meaning of village toponymy along the Cimande River, analyzes its correlation with hydrogeological disaster vulnerability, and formulates a mitigation model based on local wisdom. This study employs a qualitative approach with an anthropological focus, collecting data through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies. Informants were purposely selected from among traditional leaders with knowledge of local history. The results show that village toponymy in this region contains many geographical and hydrological elements. For example, the word Leuwi "pool or inner part of a river," Parakan "swamp; place to catch fish," and Ranca "swamp," indicating flood-prone areas. Conversely, villages with names referring to high areas, such as Pasir ("hill"), Lamping ("sloping land"), Nendeut ("landslide"), and Manggung ("higher place/area"), have lower vulnerability to flooding but higher vulnerability to landslides. These toponyms' meanings correlate with the level of disaster vulnerability in the Cimande watershed area, making them useful local indicators for mitigation. These findings emphasize the importance of utilizing toponymy as a source of information and as the basis for developing a hydro-meteorological disaster mitigation model rooted in local wisdom. This model could be used by policymakers, particularly the Sumedang Regency Government, to integrate traditional knowledge into spatial planning, education, and community outreach.

Abstract

Over-The-Top (OTT) services have revolutionized how individuals access and consume media content, generating new dynamics in the relationship between technology, society, and culture. This study aims to conceptually examine the development of OTT through the lens of the Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) to understand how social construction shapes the direction, meaning, and use of OTT technologies. This approach focuses on social actors, relevant groups, and the diverse interpretations of OTT, from design and adoption processes to emerging regulatory and cultural controversies. Employing a literature review method, the study draws on 15 scholarly articles from various global contexts, including Indonesia, South Korea, and Europe. The findings reveal that the adoption and perception of OTT are not solely determined by technological capabilities, but also shaped by social values, market pressures, cultural identities, and social anxieties such as Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). This study recommends a participatory approach in the development of OTT technologies to ensure greater inclusivity and responsiveness to societal needs.

Abstract

Bordah music is a cultural heritage of the Malay community that is full of spiritual and religious values. However, in the context of marriage ceremonies in Gunting Saga Village, this art has experienced a shift in meaning due to the influence of modernization and social change. This study aims to: (1) describe the form of presentation of Bordah art in the wedding ceremony of the Malay community; (2) analyze the factors causing the shift in the meaning of Bordah; and (3) examine the community's perception of changes in the form and function of the art. This research uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted inductively-qualitatively with a semiotic approach to reveal the symbolic meaning contained in Bordah performances. The results showed that Bordah art has shifted from a sacred-religious function to a symbolic entertainment function. This shift is influenced by the modernization of musical instruments, the decline in the regeneration of artists, and changes in the cultural preferences of the younger generation. This research contributes to the study of traditional cultural adaptation to modernization, and offers a theoretical understanding of the transformation of meaning in local performing arts practices. The implications of these findings suggest the need for cultural preservation strategies that are responsive to social and generational dynamics.

Abstract

The Netflix documentary, "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso," generated significant public interest and widespread social media discussion by offering a novel perspective on the 2016 trial, contrasting with conventional media narratives that had previously accused Jessica Wongso of culpability. As a subscription-based Over The Top (OTT) platform, Netflix effectively influenced public opinion and perception of Jessica Wongso and other characters in the documentary by establishing a new narrative framework through emotional visualization and dramatic storytelling. This investigation aims to examine how Netflix shapes new public opinion and influences the public's perception of Jessica Wongso and other characters. The methodology involved a literature review examining five prior studies on framing from Google Scholar and SINTA-accredited journals. The findings demonstrate Netflix's effectiveness in altering public perceptions. The documentary substantially altered the public's perception of Jessica, initially depicted as cold, portraying her instead as a vulnerable figure possibly denied justice. Edi Darmawan Salihin, the victim's father, was also framed as an arrogant and dominant antagonist through visuals and interviews, underscoring documentary media's influence on individual perceptions. Discussions emerged regarding the reframing's endurance and the impact of social media posts (both official and prosumer) on its success, given the public's critical media consumption. In summary, "Ice Cold" effectively reframed the case narrative and influenced new public opinion, igniting widespread conversation.  Future research is advised to incorporate the victim's family's perspective and the evolution of public opinion following Jessica Wongso's parole for a more thorough and impartial study.
