Abstract

Beksan Telaga Angsa blends the aesthetics of classical Javanese dance with choreographic elements of the ballet Swan Lake, yet studies examining how the encounter between these two traditions shapes layers of symbolic meaning remain limited. This study interprets the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings of the dance using Roland Barthes' semiotics. This descriptive qualitative research gathered data through direct observation of the performance at Graha Bakti Budaya, Taman Ismail Marzuki, in July 2025, and indirect interviews with Bathara Saverigadi Dewandoro, the choreographer and key informant. The data were analyzed following Barthes' two orders of signification, from identifying denotative signs and connotative meanings to constructing myth. Three main findings emerged. First, at the denotative level, the dance presents the figure of a swan through movement, costume, and supporting properties. Second, at the connotative level, the soft, flowing movement quality and predominantly white costumes are interpreted by the researcher as elegance and purity. Third, at the level of myth, the combination of ballet port de bras patterns with the Javanese ngithing hand position is read as a narrative of fidelity and tradition preservation negotiated with Western movement idioms. This study contributes to the semiotic study of performing arts by showing how the cross-cultural reinterpretation of classical dance generates new meanings that connect cultural heritage and modernity.

Abstract

An orphanage is not only a place where children’s basic needs are met, but also a social environment in which values are socialized, habituated, interpreted, and internalized through everyday communal life. This study aims to analyze the transformation of Tri Hita Karana values in the lives of children at Narayan Seva Orphanage, Kerobokan Village, Sawan District, Buleleng Regency. The study employed a descriptive-interpretive qualitative design involving eight purposively selected informants, consisting of managers, a religious mentor, caregivers, and children. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed through data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. The findings show that Parahyangan is actualized through prayer, yoga, meditation, and religious routines; Pawongan through communal living, mutual assistance, shared responsibilities, caregiving, and conflict mediation; and Palemahan through cleaning duties, waste management, facility maintenance, and environmental care. Based on informants’ experiences and field observations, internalization develops from rule-based compliance and repeated participation toward reflection, personal meaning-making, and increasingly autonomous action. Indications of transformation were found in religious awareness, social responsibility, emotional self-control, conflict management, and environmental concern. The novelty of this study lies in distinguishing compliance dependent on external rules from internalization characterized by reflection, personal meaning-making, and autonomous action. The study concludes that the transformation of Tri Hita Karana values occurs gradually and nonlinearly through habituation, reflection, internalization, and actualization in everyday life.

Abstract

The keris is an intangible cultural heritage whose preservation relies heavily on the knowledge transmission system within the pande family. Amid rapid modernization in Denpasar, Prapen Tapa Karya has successfully preserved and evolved the keris forging tradition across four generations. This study aims to analyze the didactic transmission system of keris forging across generations at Prapen Tapa Karya and its adaptation to contemporary changes. Employing a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The findings reveal an evolving trajectory from the first generation (focusing on utilitarian functions), the second and third generations (integrating aesthetics and material experimentation), to the fourth generation (adopting a collaborative, explorative, and scientific approach). The didactic transmission system is structured into three distinct stages: Satya (foundational skills and discipline), Madya (crafting ritual implements and cultivating spiritual awareness), and Utama (achieving peak technical and spiritual mastery in keris making). In conclusion, the didactic transmission at Prapen Tapa Karya represents an ethnopedagogical model rooted in habitus, seamlessly blending technical proficiency, character building, and spiritual practice to ensure the sustainability of Balinese keris heritage.
