Abstract

This study deals with numerical investigation of hydrodynamic properties of fluids flow accross a single circular cylinder. The flow is assumed incompressible, laminar with Reynolds number 0,0001, 2, 20, 40, 100, 200, 400, 1000, 4000 and 20000. The work started with generating geometrical mesh, and then continue with the numerical simulation. The simulations were done by varying the pressure with standardm linier or second order interpolation, momentum discretisation (first-order upwind, second-order upwind, Power law), and pressure velocity coupling (SIMPLE, SIMPLEC, and PISO). The simulation results agree with the experimental results done by other. The comparison parameter used were flow pattern, Strouhal number, drag coefficient, and separation position. The simulation results also show that the flow characteristic with Reynolds Number larger than 40 is depend on time (unsteady). This is caused by vortex shedding at the rear of the cylinder. The body force (lift and drag) on the cylinder change periodically and the value agree with the experimental results.

Abstract

Electro Discharge Machining Wire Cut (EDM Wire Cut) is one of non-conventional machining process which is used by many manufacturer industries. Technology development demands this process can produce high quality product with good productivity. To fulfill this demand, optimization of machining processes that involves several variables can be done. When doing the optimization of machining condition, an algorithm using mathematical model is needed to calculate the optimum values of process variables. There are many optimization techniques and methods which can be chosen, one of them is Genetic Algorithm. In this research work, an implementation of Genetic Algorithm in machining process optimization is presented. As the optimization parameters, feed rate and surface roughness selected. Based on the above parameters and considering the capability of the existing EDM Wire Cut, five input parameters are determined with right combination, namely no load voltage, capacitor, on time, off time and servo voltage. The output has been compared to other optimization method and it appears that the Genetic Algorithm shows promising results and thus may be proposed as an alternative tool in machining process optimization.

Abstract

In this paper, moisture absorption process in composite material was analytically and experimentally studied. The environmental condition was 72o C and 85 % RH. During a fixed interval time, the composite specimens were taken out from the experimental chamber and weighted. The weight gain showed that the absorption isoterm profile followed Fick Law andthere was a good agreement between the analytical and experimental results. The average maximum moisture absorption was 0.84 %.

Abstract

In conjunction with the CFC phase out, IURC-ES ITB has been concentrating its research of HC refrigerant on ‘propane natural butane’ (PNB) refrigerant. The test results obtained in IURC-ES ITB during the development of the PNB refrigerant showed that PNB has better performance than PIB and CFC-12. The field tests of PNB also showed the similar results. Recently, to reconfirm the previous test results, the performance of PNB, PIB and CFC-I2 were compared in a series of performance tests in the LTMP Serpong. The tests also show that PNB consistently has better performance compared to PIB and CFC-12. This paper also reports the current development of PNB refrigerant in IURC-ES ITB.

Abstract

Untuk mendapatkan prediksi respon yang cukup akurat dalam analisis tabrakan kendaraan darat, dimana terjadi pembebanan dan deformasi struktur dalam waktu yang cepat, diperlukan data sifat mekanik material pada berbagai laju regangan. Makalah ini menyajikan pengukuran sifat mekanik Mild Steel St37 dan High Strength Steel CR420LA pada kondisi kuasi-statik dengan laju regangan 0.001 s-1 dan pada kondisi dinamik dengan laju regangan 0.1 s-1, 1 s-1, 10 s-1, dan 100 s-1. Dalam pengujian, data beban terhadap waktu direkam menggunakan load cell, sedangkan data perpindahan terhadap waktu diperoleh menggunakan ekstensometer untuk uji kuasi-statik dan menggunakan kamera kecepatan tinggi diikuti dengan perhitungan regangan berdasarkan metode Korelasi Citra Digital (KCD) untuk kondisi dinamik. Hasil pengukuran menunjukan bahwa baja St37 dan CR420LA termasuk ke dalam jenis material yang sensitif terhadap laju regangan, dimana tegangan luluh material meningkat dengan naiknya laju regangan pada material.

Abstract

This paper presents the stress intensity factor (SIF) analysis for unidirectional fiber-matrix lamina containing center crack under uniaxial loading. Several variables are considered on the influence to the stress intensification factor i.e. fiber direction,θ, crack dimension parameter, 2a/L, fiber and matrix volume fraction, Vf, Vm, fiber and matrix stiffness ration, Ef/Em, and lamina thickness. The stress-strain equations for the lamina are derived using micromechanic approach. The governing equations are solved numerically using the finite element method with triangular type element. The element stifiness matrix is obtained using the polynomial shape functions. The software to calculate stress-strain in the lamina containing center crack is developed. Case studies jor numerical purposes consider the carbon-epoagz lamina with carbon type P-100. Numerical results for carbon epoxy lamina are presented in graphical form of SIF as a fimction of the fiber direction, fiber matrix stifihess ratio and volume ratio, and crack geometry.

Abstract

Turbo Mixer with 350 kg capacity is designed to mix greensand by mixing it using turbo blade rotation so it creates a mix using scatter method. Using this method, the greensand will not be damaged during the process. The turbo blade rotation with lateral mixing arm was set in a way that the mixer could work efficiently. The construction of this turbo mixer is rigid but simple to ensure the easiness of operating, maintenance and manufacturing. In other application, Turbo Mixer could be developed for mixing of fertilizers, drugs etc. Several design practice figures for 350 kg turbo mixer, are taken from the recalculation of 750 kg turbo mixer that have been made before.

Abstract

Pengaruh ketebalan benda uji terhadap keretakan pada beban statik telah banyak dilakukan. Kajian biasanya dilakukan dengan menganggap plastisitas ujung retak, yaitu kondisi tegangan dekat ujung retak, berada pada kondisi regangan dan tegangan bidang. Tulisan ini melaporkan hasil kajian numerik dan eksperimental pengaruh kondisi tegangan pada rongga yang menyatu akibat pulsa intensitas tegangan. Durasi pulsa yang digunakan adalah 20, 40, dan 80 μs. Pengamatan terhadap permukaan yang patah memperlihatkan adanya beberapa rongga di daerah inklusi dimuka ujung retak. Rongga utama tersebut terbentuk dari menyatunya rongga-rongga kecil. Hasil pengamatan juga menunjukkan bahwa lokasi rongga utama tidak dipengaruhi oleh durasi impuls, dan ukuran rongga utama akan mengecil dengan menurunnya durasi pulsa. Simulasi metode elemen hingga menunjukkan bahwa normalisasi tegangan hidrostatik di muka ujung retak tidak dapat menjelaskan hasil-hasil dari percobaan. Sebagai contoh ketangguhan retak spesimen dengan tebal 10 mm ternyata lebih kecil jika dibandingkan dengan ketangguhan retak spesimen dengan tebal 3mm. Contoh lainnya adalah daerah terbentuknya rongga yang tidak bergantung pada tebal spesimen.

Abstract

Tinggi angkat katup isap pada motor bakar torak akan mempengaruhi jumlah massa udara dan bahan bakar sebenarnya yang masuk ke ruang bakar, yang akan mempengaruhi efisiensi volumetriknya. Tinggi angkat katup isap ini sebanding dengan koefisien aliran katup isap rata-ratanya. Akan tetapi ternyata efisiensi volumetrik menunjukkan karakteristik yang lain, yaitu efisiensi volumetrik terbesar diberikan bukan oleh kam yang mempunyai tinggi angkat maksimum terbesar, tetapi justru diberikan oleh kam yang mempunyai Lmax nomor 2 dari ketiga kam yang digunakan.

Abstract

This paper describes the development of a portable microcontroller-based data acquisition system suitable for field balancing. The prototype was designed to have three channels. Channel 0 was designed to receive a DC signal and therefore suitable for reference signal, such as generated by optical sensor. In contrast, channels 1 and 2 were designed to receive AC signals and therefore suitable for vibration signals. In the design, the acquisition process was performed by three ADCs which sample data simultaneously, thus minimizing the phase difference between channels. The data obtained by ADC are then stored within memory, capable to store data as many as 8192 for each channel. The hardware is also equipped with a keypad modul as an input medium, an LCD modul as an output medium, and a rechargeable battery as a power supply. The software of this data acquitition system is classified into data-acquitition program and interface program. The performance of the prototype was tested using unbalance demontration setup and the results of measurement are compared to those obtained by MSA HP 35650 as a reference instrument. The measurement shows that results of measurement obtained by theprototype are relatively similar to those obtained by MSA.
