Abstract

This work is based on method developed by Storer, Lee and Tomlinson [1,2,3]. Storer [1] determined parameter of nonlinear system by curve fitting of higher order FRF that was obtained by measuring stimulus and response of nonlinear system in the frequency domain. While Lee [2] determined spatial model parameter i.e. mass, stiffness and damping constant based on higher order FRF that was obtained from measurement of excitation force amplitude in time domain and complex response in frequency domain. In this paper the two methods will be compared by conducting experiment on the ball bearing which shows nonlinear behavior [4,5]. The result shows the two methods have a significant difference. While the amplitude of excitation force affect the higher order Transfer Function and also the dynamical parameter of the system.

Abstract

In recent years, fiber-matrix composite laminates have been widely used in mechanical structures. Due to functional design requirements, the laminates may contain holes that could cause stress concentration. Unlike isotropic plate, where the stress concentration depend upon geometric parameter and loading conditions, stress concentration factor of fiber-matrix composite is also depend on the anisotropic properties such as fiber direction and angle ply. This paper present intensive studies of the influence of the fiber direction and angle ply to the stress concentration factors for composite laminate containing circular and elliptical hole under uniaxial loading. The stress concentration factor curves are presented for various angle ply, fiber direction, and geometric parameter. These curves could be used by designer to obtain the optimum design of laminate structure containing hole.

Abstract

The Stirling engine is an external combustion engine for converting the thermal energy into mechanical energy. This engine uses a Stirling cycle, which theoretically could have high thermal efficiency, which is as high as a Carnot cycle operating at a similar condition. This paper deals with a design process of Stirling engine’s mechanism stressing on the kinematics and dynamics aspects. Thermodynamics and geometry parameters are the inputs required for designing the Stirling engine’s mechanism. Material aspect has not been included in the design. The main parameters analyzed are: engine’s rotational speed, working temperature, cylinder’s pressure, inertial forces and power output. The results of the design are useful to give an overall picture of the main dimensions of a Stirling engine. Detail calculations are still needed for more advanced design.

Abstract

Indonesian small and medium industries (UKM) have the ability to produce relatively cheap truck/bus brake drums, but the quality is needed to be improved. The drums usually fail in form of cracks or fractures before the design life is reached. This paper presents failure identification of the UKM’s brake drums that is including material aspects, operational loading, and stress analysis. The mechanical and physical properties of the materials are studied by conducting tensile test, hardness test, chemical composition, and metallography. Fractography is also conducted to study the type and process of the failures. The brake loads are analyzed for various operational conditions such as straight, curved, and downhill path, with various value of decceleration. Stress analysis of the drum due to the applied loads is conducted using finite element method. The complete analysis shows that the UKM’s drums are not strong enough for the applied braking load. It is also observed that the crack locations are in agreement with the highly computed stressed areas.

Abstract

Sub-channel analysis is a method for analyzing thermal hydraulic aspects of nuclear reactors or heat exchangers. The analysis calculates distributions of fluid temperature, pressure, axial velocity, transverse velocity, and fuel rod temperature or heat flux. This paper deals with efforts for improving the accuracy of the sub-channel method. Three numerical schemes for evaluating transversal advective heat rates, i.e.: up wind, exponential, and central difference schemes, were compared. The differences among calculation results obtained by programs that apply these schemes were insignificant. The paper also seeks the best definition of averaged temperature for evaluating physical properties of control volume. It was found that accuracy of the sub-channel method can be improved if the volume-averaged and area-averaged enthalpy in the energy equation, and the volume-averaged density in the axial momentum equation were evaluated based on the fluid temperatures at the middle of control volumes.

Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this research is to establish an analysis of an air conditioning system in a minibus vehicle cabin through some series of numerical simulations using a Computational Fluid Dynamics software. Two three-dimensional models of the vehicle were used in the simulations. The first model is a minibus without any passenger, and the second model is a minibus with seven passengers. In this research, the passenger model was considered as another cooling load source, therefore an analysis of the cooling effect experienced by passenger was not performed. A calculation of cooling load was also done to determine the maximum cooling load, using the weather data of Jakarta city throughout the year 2002. An experiment was done using an actual vehicle to validate the model. The maximum error of temperature reading between experiment and simulation was calculated and gave an acceptable maximum error of 10%. The simulation in this step was performed using the first model and steady calculation. A series of simulations were also done to analyze the air conditioning system performance under maximum cooling load. These simulations were done by varying the mass flow rates of the air entering the cabin, using the second model and transient calculations. The temperature and velocity contours acquired from these simulations were able to give good understanding of correlations between the factors influencing the air condition in the cabin.
