Abstract

Cement calsiner is a reactor where the decarbonization of lime stone and fuel combustion processes take place simultaneously. Decarbonization of lime stone is endothermic process and uses the heat produced by the combustion of fuel. However, because these two simultaneous processes produce CO2, the effectiveness of both processes depend on the CO2 concentration along the gas stream inside the calciner. The complexity of these simultaneous processes causes the variation of calciner design that could be found in cement industry. Especially for the calciner using coal as a fuel, this variation design influences significantly to the operation of the calciner. This paper presents a comparison study of design and operational parameters of some calciners in Indonesian cement manufacturers. The result of study could be used for designers to consider some principal parameters during design process so that the calciner could operate properly and give a better performance.

Abstract

This paper presents research on the development of semi automation technique for balancing machines. Using this technique, rotational speed of rotors, data acquisition process, and amplitude and phase of vibration calculations could be performed by a computer. Consequently, faster and more accurate balancing process can be achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed control method was verified using experimental results. In this test, the rotor speed was measured by and compared to the results obtained from software, a digital oscilloscope, a digital tachometer and a Multi Channel Spectrum Analyzer M/ISA). Furthermore, to verify the accuracy of amplitude and phase calculations, the values obtained from the developed software were compared to those from analytical results obtained from MSA.

Abstract

Iron foam is iron based material which is widely applied due to its unique properties. However since corrosion is also a problem for this material, coating with innert material is required in enhancing its applications. In the present research, TiO2 coating is performed on iron foam suface by sol-gel dipping method. Focus is given on the study of the effect of calcinations temperature and time on the coating characteristics. TiCl4 is used as the precursor with concentration of 0.3 M, added with 1M HCl solution and chitosan soluation with concentration of 1%. Calcination is performed at temperature of 400, 500 dan 600oC and calcinations time of 1 and 3 hours inside controlled gas furnace using nitrogen atmosphere. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) characterization data shows that TiO2 particles form on the iron foam substrate. SEM characterization on the sample heated at 400oC and heating time of 1 hour shows the formation of nano particle titania (0.06 μm) which is homogeneously distributed with less agglomeration than others and considered as the best sample in the present research. As the temperature and time of calcinations increase, more inhomogeneous particle distribution and bigger particles form.

Abstract

In conceptual aircraft design phase, the aircraft configuration and several design variables are frequently changed and starting points are depended on any most probable design conditions. Therefore, it is required a design tool having flexibility to response to different starting points. The implementation of the constraint propagation supported by an object-oriented programming could result in a computer application that considerably accommodates the need of flexibilities.  Moreover, the implementation of some graphical user-interfaces and filter are not only to make it become user-friendly but also it may perform good filters to validate all inputs from the user. Use case diagram and class diagram are utilized as tools for designing the computer application using Microsoft Visual C++ 6. For a case study, some relations of basic aircraft geometry are implemented by selecting the six constraints and fourteen design variables. The result of this work shows that the application of constraint propagation is right and proper to handle any frequent changes during the conceptual design phase.

Abstract

In the present situation there is a tendency to avoid as far as possible the use of the synthetic substances as refrigerant which can destroy ozone layer and increase average contribute to the A much more safe philosophy must be to revert to natural refrigerants, substances which are already present in our environment. The use of C02 as refrigerant is one attempt to this approach. This new refrigeration technology use special cycle called “Lorentzen Cycle".  Lorentzen s invention opened a wide way to enhance the refrigeration technology and brought a lot of applications that can use this new cycle. This paper try to explain the basic principle of“Lorentzen Cycle” and one of such applications which has being developed at Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Abstract

During its operation, Slide-Water-Gate structure, receive an excessive vibration due to resonance effect caused by water current. To avoid this undesirable effect, in this paper we propose the application of structural optimization method to modify the initial structure. The goal of this optimization is to maximize the first natural frequencies so that the resonance effect can be minimized and the weight of structure is remained constant. The optimization is conducted by using the ANSYS 5.4 finite element program package.

Abstract

This paper concerns on analysis of energy in drying operation, because energy is crucial and determines process efficiency throughout. Further, techno-economy is also studied for drying agricultural product, such as paddy, in a multi-stage deep-bed dryer with focussing in study two-stage one. Thermal and drying efficiency have been evaluated from experiment data. Moreover, the techno-economy in view of energy consumption for drying operation is also considered . The analysis shows that the increasing of bed height for constant drying air temperature will significantly increase thermal and drying efficiency as well as energy consumption for dryer operation. Further, thermal efficiency, drying efficiency and energy consumption decreases with increasing the inlet drying air temperature which in turn reducing of drying cost operation. The study shows that the two-stage deep-bed dryer have higher thermal and drying efficiency and lower energy consumption compared to one-stage dryer.

Abstract

This paper presents numerical and experimental study of the heat transfer on fins-tube heat exchanger that was employed as an air cooled condenser of the air conditioning system. In this case change of phase occurs on refrigerant side while air remain at gas phase. The proposed numerical analysis is based on the application of mass and energy balances implemented at a small control volume that is part of the condenser. The result of numerical evaluation was then compared with the experimental observation. A good agreement between experimental and numerical results was achieved and the numerical method is proposed that to be used as a tool for fins tube condenser design.
