Abstract

Abstract

This paper contains the testing of a spark ignition engine to observe the influence of the engine temperature variation on the ignition timing. The engine temperature of Toyota 7K equipped with EFI self developed by LMBSP is varied and the performance test is conducted over the variations of load and rpm, which simulate the real condition on the road. The aim of the experiments is to yield the ignition timing which produces the optimum performance at any load condition.

Abstract

One of the methods for increasing separation efficiency of a cyclone is to implement a fabric filter at its inner tube. The combination of cyclone separator and fabric filter in commonly called as cyclo-dust filter. This paper presents an experimental study of the performance test of cyclo-dust filter and CFD numerical simulation of the flow inside this apparatus. The experiment was conducted for some variation of filter area. The results show that the separation efficiency of more than 99% was observed. This value is normally very difficult to reach with a normal cyclone separator. The pressure drop rises with the increasing of fabric’s area. However this increase of pressure drop is not proportional to the increase of the fabric’s area. The CFD simulation was also used for determining the best position of inlet duct.

Abstract

Sintering process has proven to be a manufacturing process that can produce a mechanical part with high geometric complexity. Development of alternative sintering process is continuously conducted to find the most inexpensive process. A solution process which is called indirect pressure-less sintering were proposed in this research. Generally this process of making a mechanical part is initiated with arranging powder by deposition machine, and continued by sintering process in conventional furnace. Optimal parameters that consist of sintering temperature and holding time in this process were optimized in this paper. PVC powder and sand casting (silica) were used as a material product and supporting powder respectively. The variations of sintering temperature are 100, 105, 110, 115 and 120°C, while the holding times are 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours. The optimal parameters were found by measuring tensile strength and shrinkage of specimen. The experiment results showed that dimensional stability of specimen can not be maintained for sintering temperature of 115°C with holding time longer than 2 hours. In sintering temperature higher than 120°C, PVC material directly starts to melt so that the volume of specimen increased. This was caused by binding of supporting powder. The strength of binding mechanism was measured when sintering temperature was higher than 107°C. In sintering temperature of 113°C with varying the holding time (2-8 hours) gave the longest variation of tensile strength.

Abstract

Abstract

Modification of the conventional cycle in a geothermaL power plant is an alternative way that can be conducted in efficient conversion of thermal energy to be electric energy. Combination of Brayton cycle with fossil fuel energy sources and Rankine cycle utilizing geothermal energy is interest of this study. Kamojang Geothermal power plant is chosen as an object of casestudy. A software was developed to accurately evaluate the thermodynamic cycle with any modification. The software is supported by thermodynamic properties database directly derived from equations of state. Hybrid cycle analysis was conducted by comparing the conventional geothermal system operating with independent Rankine cycle such as the current Kamojang geothermal power plant in accordance with rational data ernd assumptions.Simulation results show that 157.88% of power increment, 58.17% of efficiency increment for using organic working fluid R-134a. Replacing R-134a with organic working R-600 afford 162.89% of power increnrent and 63.76% of efficiency increment. Ratio of the net power increment respect to the heating input of fuel is 0.52. This high enhancement is achieved for gas turbine inlet temperature of 1100 celcius degree, pressure ratio of 20, gas temperatltre front steam heater at 350 celcius degree, steam temperature from the heater at 250 celcius degree, and organic turbine inlet pressure and temperature at 35 bars and 340 celcius degree, respectively.

Abstract

Trimethylolethane (TME) trihydrate particle suspended in water is a proper substance for latent heat transportation in cooling systems, since it has high heat transfer and thermal capacity. Additives, oleyl bishydroxyethyl methyl ammonium chloride as surfactant and sodium salicylate as counter-ion, were added into TME slurry to reduce its friction factor. Aditives influence on particle size distribution and rheological characteristic of TME are investigated in this study. It is found that the additives do not influence particle size at crystallization point, but they clearly inhibit further particle growth. By increasing molar ratio of counter-ion to surfactant, the particles do not grow at all. Increasing TME concentration reduces the apparent viscosity of TME with surfactant and increases critical shear rate for Shear Induced Structure (SIS) occurrence. By connecting this SIS phenomenon with previous data, it is found that there is a relation between the SIS and drag reduction for this drag-reducing TME suspension system.

Abstract

This paper presents an optimization technique applying the design of the cyclone separators. The results of this optimization technique were the main geometric ratio of the modified cyclone (DOPOL), which presented in non-dimensional form, that satisfied the following criteria: minimum pressure drop or maximum separation efficiency. The design procedure of the cyclone was written as the computer software, where the iterative computation design can be proceed faster. This software used the correlations of the cyclone performance obtained by the previous experimental on a modified cyclone. The software not only could be applied for modified cyclone design, but it also could be used for the design of the classical cyclone base on the well-known algorithm.
