Abstract

Pump as Turbine (PaT) tested from mixed flow pump type with 250 mm bore diameter, and impeller tip has a minimum modification by rounded the blade, which could improve the efficiency of 2% to 6%. The modification is done by rounded the impeller tip with 2 mm radius. Tested Pump as Turbine at 1000 rpm has an efficiency about 82% and 10 kW power output. The best power produced by 250 mm bore Pump as Turbine is 25 kW at the 75% efficiency. The 15 meters head may have the runaway speed of the Pump as Turbine on asymptotic level at 2500 rpm. The pump as turbine could utilized as Micro Hydro Power driver in the low cost, compare with Francis turbine design and development cost, which is mass production of the pumps and abundant at the market.

Abstract

Ignition delay is an important parameter in diesel engine operation. It is defined as the time (or crank angle degree) between the start of injection and the start of combustion. Ignition delay should be kept as short as possible, otherwise diesel knocking can occur if the delay is too long. Many works have shown that increasing fuel cetane number may shorten the ignition delay. In conjunction with the BPBT "“ PPKS Biodiesel Project to utilize methyl ester palm oil (sawit) (MES) as an alternative fuel, several compositions of MES-conventional diesel fuel blends were tested. Cetane number of MES-diesel fuel blends were calculated to be higher than that of conventional diesel fuel. Hence, it was expected that the MES-diesel fuel blends would yield shorter ignition delay than pure diesel fuel. Engine tests were conducted to compare the performance of several blends of MES-diesel fuel. The results from in-cylinder pressure data, from which ignition delay was determined have confirmed this work. Furthermore, correlations between ignition delay, cetane number, and engine speed have been obtained in simple linear equations.Key words: Ignition delay, Cetane number, Biodiesel, Methyl Ester Sawit (MES), Direct injection.

Abstract

Research and development of Robot Vision activity requirs a Moving platform with high mobility on translation as well as rotation movement. Omnidirectional vehicle reported here has optimum planar movement in the form translational movement on any direction as well as turning radius from zero to infinity, therefore it is suitable as a moving platform for research activities on 2 dimensional Robot Vision. Testing and measurement on the accuracy of vehicle straight trajectory on different direction have been carried out. Some error compensation algorithm has been applied and some good results on reducing trajectory errors have been observed.

Abstract

This study is aimed to produce CAM software run under AutoCAD 2000 or latest version using Visual Basic for Application (VBA) program. Machining processes are carried out using endmill cutter at X-Y plane. Input of this software is 3-D drawings of the model. The output of this software are G-Code of cutting tool path. The software also provides fasilities to approach spline and ellips with connected lines but still considering geometric tolerances of line profile.

Abstract

This paper discusses the stability of Wing-in-Surface-Effect (WiSE) craft. The aerodynamic parameters of new WiSE craft jointly designed by the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology, Indonesian Aerospace Ltd. and Institute of Technology Bandung are estimated using software Digital Datcom of the US Air Force. The aerodynamic parameters are used to predict the longitudinal stability characteristics of the WiSE craft. The surface effect on some aerodynamic parametes that influence the longitudinal stability of the WiSE craft will be discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Cooling of clinker into grate cooler is one of important processes in cement manufacturing because it influences the quality of the clinker and also determines heat recovery of the combustion air which related well to the fuel consumption. Heat transfer mechanism of the clinker cooling comprises radiation, convection, and conduction. This paper presents a numerical method of clinker cooling process on a grate cooler in order to evaluate temperature distribution of both clinker and cooling air in vertical and horizontal directions along the grates. The result was validated with the measurement of clinker temperature at the discharge section of the cooler. The proposed evaluation method will pave the way for determining the constant values of the control system for cooling air..

Abstract

Inspection is an activity to detect and evaluate the possibility of damage or degradation of operating equipment. Risk Based Inspection (RBI) Method is one of management inspection methods based on risk level of an equipment or a work unit. The RBI Method uses a combination of two parameters (category of failure possibility and category of failure consequence) for determining the level of risk for industrial equipment. The method was applied to several chemical reactors in a petrochemical industry such as Hydrotreater, Secondary Reformer, Shift Converter, Ammonia Synthesis Converter, Methanator, Zinc Oxide Guard, and Mercury Guard Chamber. Using qualitative RBI method, the risks of the equipment are as follow: Hydrotreater (Low Risk), Secondary Reformer (Low Risk), Shift Converter (Low Risk), Ammonia Synthesis Converter (Low Risk), Methanator (Low Risk), Zinc Oxide Guard (Low Risk), and Mercury Guard Chamber (Low Risk). Meanwhile, using semi-quantitative RBI method, the risks were found to be: Hydrotreater (High Risk), Secondary Reformer (High Risk), Shift Converter (High Risk), Ammonia Synthesis Converter (High Risk), Methanator (High Risk), Zinc Oxide Guard (High Risk), Mercury Guard Chamber (High Risk).

Abstract

One of the methods for increasing separation efficiency of a cyclone is to implement a fabric filter at its inner tube. The combination of cyclone separator and fabric filter in commonly called as cyclo-dust filter. This paper presents an experimental study of the performance test of cyclo-dust filter and CFD numerical simulation of the flow inside this apparatus. The experiment was conducted for some variation of filter area. The results show that the separation efficiency of more than 99% was observed. This value is normally very difficult to reach with a normal cyclone separator. The pressure drop rises with the increasing of fabric's area. However this increase of pressure drop is not proportional to the increase of the fabric's area. The CFD simulation was also used for determining the best position of inlet duct.

Abstract

This paper explores the study of numerical determination of roller bearing stiffness as a result of wear increment by using contact Hertzian method. This study is part of the research on the determination of roller bearing vibration response as a result of wear increment. In this paper, wear is assumed as diametral clearance, Cd, and force work in radial direction. Computational method shows that increasing wear causes the decrease of stiffness. The relationship between deflection and stiffness, radial load and stiffness as a function of Cd can be determined.

Abstract

Horizontal Axis Wind Energy Conversion System (HAWECS) is more efficient than other Wind Energy Conversion Systems at the same condition [2,3]. Rotating cylindrical blade is taken as the substitute alternative to the airfoil blade considering that presence of lift force and its simple manufacturing production. The lift force generated by the rotating cylinder is known as the Magnus Effect [1,7,9]. The savonius rotor in this research is employed to propel the cylinder. This research conducted an experiment to optimize the energy conversion of a HAWECS which its blades consist of the combination of cylinder and savonius rotor. Two kind of blades were used in this experiment, i.e.blade with L/D (ratio of the length and diameter of cylinder) equals to 3 and 4. Three variations of wind velocities were used, i.e. 8.5 m/s, 9.7 m/s, and 10.2 m/s. Experimental results present that the blade with L/D ratio = 4 give more efficient than the L/D = 3, and the increase of power was reached if the wind velocity increases.
