Abstract. The Bromo legend belongs to oral literature or folklore of the Tenggerese in the Situbondo Regency, East Java. The legend functions as a means of transmitting social values, a projection of social wishes, a tool of spreading religious teachings and a tool of law enforcement. The present study assumes that the Mount Bromo legend is aimed to teach moral values. This paper discusses the characters and the moral values in the Mount Bromo legend. Here the characters play the strategic positions as the messengers of the moral values to be delivered to readers. The study adopts philosophical-moral approach. The data source is the Mount Bromo folklore. The data collection methods include documentary, interview, recording, and note-taking methods. The data are collected using human instrument. The result of the study are as follows. The protagonists in the Mount Bromo legend are Rara Anteng, Joko Seger, and Kusuma, while th antagonist is Bajak. The moral values in the story are true love, just and wise ruler who listens to his people, religious ruler, loving parents and willingness to sacrifice for family and people.Keywords: protagonist, antagonist, moral values

Abstract. Injustice has been part of life for different ability people, especially for diffabled women in many parts of Indonesia. A diffabled woman writer, Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim, refuses the assumptionand proves on strength and spirit of life in women and diffable people through her works. This studydiscusses Ibrahim’s short stories about women and the life of her diffabled characters. The data sources ofthe study are novelettes by Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim. The data are quotes from the works that talk aboutdiffability. The study was based on understanding and interpretation processes. The study found that theIbrahim’s works discusses the image and strength of the diffabled woman character in defending for herrights. Ibrahim also proves that being diffabled does not necessarily mean constant mercy-seeking anddependence on others. Ibrahim tries to introduce a new paradigm that the diffabled people have the samepontential as the normal people do. The image of diffability is illustrated in her works that are fullyloaded with struggle of both a woman and a diffabled person.Kata kunci: citra, difabel, Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim

ABSTRACT. This study expresses reflection of Herman Melville’s point of view about multiculturalism in his novel, Moby Dick (1851). Five indicators of characteristic of multicultural literature applied as the base of this study are: varied and unique characters, admission of equality of all characters, authentic character’s social background, values of ancient treasure, and author as part of story. By expressive-hermeneutic approach, it can be concluded as followings. First, Moby Dick represents varied and unique characters. Second, Moby Dick represents admission of equality of all characters. Third, Moby Dick shows authentic social background of characters. Fourth, Moby Dick promotes values of ancient treasure, namely tradition and religion (Christian). Fifth, Moby Dick represents Melville’s involvement as part of story through character (Ishmael). Abstract. Interests in proverbs has emerged with the fact that proverbs has been used worldwide to express wisdom of proper attitudes and behaviour when interacting in different societies. This paper is part of an ongoing study on values in English and Indonesian proverbs related with horse, cow, bufallo and donkey. These four animals are chosen as the subject of proverbs study as they are traditionally used as means of transports and other purposes. Proverbs are generally identified from its brief and memorable words or sentences that express truth and reality and in many ocassion express advice. Like other symbolic languages, proverbs involve language style and symbols that are used to describe people or something through, among others, comparison that describe something of someone. Proverbs contain daily experiences and general observation that are expressed in a fixed and effective language forms that they are memorable and are ready to use as an effective rhetorical device in both oral and written language (Mieder 2004). Proverbs are unique in how wisdom and acceptable attitudes in the community are communicated to younger generation. Proverbs express an awareness of human condition and weakness that voices of advice that are expressed in this special language may be sounded with clarity, humour, wit and insights (Barajaz, 2010). The paper reports the descriptive qualitative study on English proverbs related to horse and their equivalence or similar functions in Indonesian proverbs. The data of the study are collected from various printed and electronic sources of English and Indonesian proverbs. The study found that a number of good wisdom and advise related to work attitudes are taught and transmitted using horse as the keywords. In the context of English language learning for Indonesian students, one language aspects that are often difficult for learners are the socio-cultural values wrapped in the daily language expressions. This includes proverbs that are closely related to the thought patterns and acceptable values in the language users, especially in English. More information on English proverbs may help them achiever better understanding of the socio-cultural aspect of English.Keywords: English proverbs on horse, socio-cultural values, Indonesian equivalence

Abstract. The development of popular literary works in Indonesia today is increasingly widespread. Many talented young writers are writing their brilliant and surprising themes, characters and storyline in their writings. One of the short stories entitled “Pembantu dan Pelacur†written by Roidah. This paper aims to explore the meaning of a text of short story using semiotic theory and cultural studies. Women's issue raised in this text is often happened in our environment, trapped in the black world for being victims of violence and then plunged in a professional manner because they do not have a choice. Some of the concepts used to study the text, namely: structure, systems, relationships, representation and significance. The conclusion of this paper is that there is a class structure and social system that consists of strata layers of the lower class, middle class and upper class which is connected one to another. The social relation that appear in the form of a Barbie doll that represents the ideal female figure from different strata of society is being arisen in the story. Its significance can be seen in this text as a respectable figure of a woman who is able to keep her virginity to present to her husband on the first night that further strengthens the idea of a patriarchal culture, norms and traditions of the East.Kata Kunci: representasi, signifikansi, struktur kelas, tinjauan budaya

Abstrak. The study examines child abuse in Dave Pelzer’s two novels, A Child Called It and The Lost Boy. The study focuses on forms of child abuse experienced by the main characters in the two novels. The study is based on literary theory on character and characterization, psychological literature approach and concept and indication of child abuse. The study is descriptive qualitative. The object of study is child abuse experienced by Dave Pelzer as portrayed in both novels (2001, Orion Books Ltd, Indonesian version). The data were collected with close reading method and note-taking of the pages containing utterances and behaviour of the characters and the author’s narration that indicate or describe any manners of abuse on David as the victim and main character in both novels. The procedure of analysis includes describing the intrinsic aspects of the novels on character-characterization expressing the personality and behaviour of the main character in his interaction with other characters, examining the theme and characterization in the novel; the extrinsic aspect of the novel is examined with psychological approach based on the forms of abuse experienced by the main character. The study found that David,the main character of the novels A Child Called It and The Lost Boy, has experienced various forms of physical, psychological abuse and several forms of neglect by his own mother.Kata Kunci: : child abuse, forms of child abuse, neglect

ABSTRAK. Manga atau komik Jepang merupakan salah satu budaya Jepang dalam kehidupan sehari–hari. Sebagai media untuk memperkenalkan sejarah dan sains yang baik digunakan untuk anak-anak. Komik Rurouni Kenshin adalah salah satu komik sejarah yang sangat menarik karena berbagai macam konflik, cerita, isi, karakter dan tokohnya. Penelitian ini bertajuk “Analisis Ungkapan Emosional Marah dalam Komik Rurouni Kenshin Seri Ke-2 Karya Nobuhiro Watsuki.â€. Penelitian ini hendak menjawab permasalahan sebagai berikut: (1) Bagaimana ungkapan emosional marah para tokoh dalam komik Rurouni Kenshin Seri ke-2 karya Nobuhiro Watsuki? (2) Apa saja jenis–jenis penyebab kemarahan para tokoh dalam komik Rurouni Kenshin seri ke-2? Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan psikolinguistik. Penelitian ini menghasilkan temuan sebagai berikut, pertama, seseorang mengungkapkan kemarahan dengan memperlihatkan ciri-ciri fisik seperti otot menegang, rahang menjadi kaku, kepalan tinju; kedua, ditemukan 10 jenis penyebab kemarahan; dan ketiga, dari 10 jenis penyebab kemarahan, penyebab yang paling umum adalah kemarahan karena berang.

Abstract. Menjadi seorang exile dan kerinduan akan tanah air adalah tema yang di-ekspose oleh dua penulis yaitu, Agam Wispi dan Leila S. Chudori. Karena alas an politik Agam Wispi harus meninggalkan negara asalnya yaitu Indonesia dan hidup sebagai seorang eksil. Kerinduan akan tanah airnya diungkapkan dalam puisinya yang berjudul Pulang. Novel Leila S. Chudori yang berjudul Pulang, juga bercerita tentangkehidupan seorang eksil yang bernama Dimas Suryo. Latar belakang Pulang dimulai pada tahun 1965 dan berakhir pada tahun 1998. Dimas Suryo, dan rekan-rekannya yang menghadiri konferensi wartawan di Santiago, Chili, pada saat terjadiperistiwa G 30 S tidak bias pulang karena paspor mereka dicabut dan mereka tidak bisa kembali ke Indonesia. Pindah dari Cile ke Kuba kemudian ke China, akhirnya berakhir menetap di Paris di mana mereka membuka restoran. Meskipun dipisahkan oleh jarak yang jauh dari tanah air mereka, kerinduan mereka untuk berhubungan dengan Indonesia adalah kunci dari novel tersebut.Tulisan ini mengeksplorasi hubungan intertekstual antara Pulang karya Agam Wispi dan Pulang karya Leila S.Chudori. Dengan menggunakan teoriinterteks yang diekspose oleh Roland Barthes dan Rifatterre, makalah ini berupaya untuk melihat bagaimana Pulang karyaAgam Wispi, seorang penulis eksil Indonesia, memiliki persamaan dan perbedaan dengan Pulang karya Leila S. Chudori, seorang penulis wanita Indonesia yang terkenal pada saat ini.Keywords: intertextuality, exiles

Abstract. Karya sastra telah amat dihargai di berbagai negara di dunia sebagai sarana untuk memelihara dan mewariskan kearifan lokal kepada generasi yang lebih muda. Karya sastra dapat memberi akses bagi para murid kepada kebudayaan masyarakata yang bahasanya mereka sedang pelajari. Naskah-naskah sastra dalam bahasa Inggris mencerminkan keanekaragaman dunia kita yang kaya dan mengagumkan. Sebuah novel atau cerita pendek ataupun puisi yang bagus adalah materi pengajaran bahasa Inggris yang bagus. Jika materi tersebut dipilih secara seksama, para murid akan merasakan bahwa apa yang mereka lakukan di dalam ruang kelas adalah relevan dan bermakna bagi kehidupan mereka.Dalam konteks pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, memasilitasi para mahasiswa dari jurusan pendidikan bahasa Inggris dengan pengalaman dengan materi sastra di ruang kelas dapat memberikan kepada mereka pencapaian yang nyata dari penelusuran materi sastra di ruang kelas. Tujuan makalah ini adalah menunjukkan bahwa karya sastra dalam pengajaran bahsa adalah amat penting dalam era global demi memperluas kesadaran bahasa mahasiswa dan memelihara kearifan lokal melalui legenda yang menciptakan atmosfir yang menarik dan mengagumkan. Pembahasan ini meliputi bagaimana materi sastra, khususnya legenda, digunakan dalam kegiatan kelas bahasa Inggris yang melibatkan penceritaan kembali dan pengidentifikasian kearifan lokal. Meminta mahasiswa untuk menceritakan kembali cerita-cerita pendek dari kebudayaan mereka sendiri sebelum mereka membaca kisah otentik dalam bahasa Inggris dengan tema serupa adalah amat memotivasi mereka.Key words: language awareness, local wisdom, legends
