Abstract

This study examines how effectively English as a Foreign Language students can write paragraphs according to such factors as unity, coherence, and organization. They were the English Literature program students of the STBA Prayoga who took a Paragraph Writing subject. Paragraphs written were analysed qualitatively by close examination. Paragraphs were reread multiple times to identify key themes and concerns. This study analyzed a sample of their paragraphs and assessed them through three criteria: organization, unity, and coherence. Organising is nothing but organizing the thoughts in a logical sequence, while unity makes sure every sentence connects back to the main point. Coherence helps ideas flow smoothly within a paragraph. The results showed that students had a variety of skills in these areas. Some were able to write well-structured, unified, and smooth-flowing paragraphs, but others had a harder time keeping their ideas consistent and making their writing flow logically. These findings suggest that we need to focus on teaching strategies that help students better organize their ideas, stay on topic, and improve the flow of their writing. This study helps us understand the challenges faced by EFL learners when writing and offers some helpful ideas on how to support them in improving their paragraph writing skills in school settings.

Abstract

Abstract This is a syntactic analysis on lexical verbs found in a popular short story. It specifically aimed to identify the types and the forms of lexical verbs in a popular short story The Gift of the Magi. Based distributional method analysis on the data gathered through non-participatory observation, six types of lexical verbs were identified: intensive verbs, transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, prepositional verbs, ditransitive verbs, and complex transitive verbs. Intensive verbs appeared to be the dominant in the short story from which the data were obtained. In terms of forms, five forms were identified: past form, base form, -s form, -ing participle, and -ed participle. The base form occurs as a finite form as well as a non-finite form. The -s form occurs only as a finite form in the third person singular present tense. The past form occurs as a finite form in the past tense. The -ing participle and the -ed participle occurs only as a non-finite form. Past form occurs dominantly in the data analyzed.

Abstract

Javanese campursari is one of the identical kinds of music for Indonesian people even for Javanese people. This type of music has some characteristics such as containing light lyrics, sometimes using comedy or parody, and varying a kind of specific gesture or goyangan. A problem occurred when a symbol of the historical entity who was an ancestor of ulama/great religious spreader namely Prabu Jaka Tingkir or Mas Karebet or Sultan Hadiwijaya was used as contain of musical parody. The current researcher decided to embrace an anthropological study, especially the theory of linguistic relativity in exploring this social polemic by taking three components for example as language, language users, and worldview. Some YouTube channel sources were taken as primary data sources while other links to popular news articles would be also secondary data. The qualitative technique and contextual approach were engaged as data analysis techniques. Hence, a technique of content analysis by stepping three components such coding selection, classifying unit, and explaining contextual analysis. According to those analyses, the newest researcher concluded that the young generation has only limited insight into historical symbols in Indonesia so a specific material of historical entity was needed to be inserted in the basic curriculum.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges faced by English Education students from the 2021 cohort at Universitas PGRI Sumatera Barat during online learning in the English Correspondence subject. The purpose of this research is to identify the specific challenges encountered by students who underwent six months of online instruction using the Zoom and e-learning platforms. Employing a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach, the study collected data through interviews to gain insight into the students' lived experiences. The research sample comprised nine students from the 2021 cohort, selected via purposive sampling based on their simultaneous participation in both practice teaching and online lectures for the English Correspondence course. The findings reveal that the primary challenges students faced were unstable and slow internet connections, which led to technical disruptions, as well as a significant lack of self-discipline. This study concludes that these challenges, both technical and non-technical, critically impact the effectiveness of online learning and must be addressed to enhance the student experience.

Abstract

This study examines speech acts of suggestive language in individuals experiencing anxiety disorders within hypnotherapy practice. The research investigates the types of speech acts used during hypnosis sessions with a client experiencing anxiety. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, grounded in speech act theory by Austin (1962), Searle (1969), and Wijana (1996). Data were collected using the observation method. We presented he findings informally, explaining the results in the author's own words. We obtained from a single hypnotherapy session involving a client with anxiety. The results indicate six types of suggestive language used in hypnosis: suggestions, commands, prohibitions, statements, expressions of praise, and questions. Suggestive language, in the form of questions, encourages reflection and internal decision-making in the Client, without issuing direct commands, in accordance with direct and indirect non-literal speech acts. Suggestive language in the form of questions highlights a linguistic gap between conventional theory and hypnotherapy practice, opening new avenues for development in pragmatics and applied linguistics, particularly in therapeutic communication.

Abstract

Children struggling with neurocognitive impairment frequently experience limitations in attention, working memory, and information retrieval. These conditions contribute to low learning engagement and difficulty retaining material in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) within inclusive classroom settings. This conceptual review applies Information Processing Theory (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968; Baddeley, 2017) to examine these cognitive challenges through three core stages: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Using a descriptive-qualitative approach, the study reviews 20 sources published predominantly between 2015 and 2025, comprising Scopus-indexed international research and relevant Indonesian studies. The synthesis identifies practical EFL strategies that can support students with neurocognitive impairment: (1) multisensory input combined with schema activation to strengthen encoding; (2) chunking paired with spaced repetition to improve storage and consolidation; and (3) retrieval practice using children’s songs with missing lyrics and pictures and pragmatic contexts to boost retrieval and engagement. These strategies are feasible for inclusive settings. The review highlights the need for empirical intervention studies and targeted teacher training to effectively bridge cognitive psychology and inclusive EFL education

Abstract

Exercising freedom of choice must always be accompanied by responsibility. However, freedom is never absolute, as it is bounded by facticity arising from social conditions, relationships with others, and existing norms. This research examines Jen Wang’s The Prince and the Dressmaker, which depicts Prince Sebastian’s dual identity as both a royal heir and his alter ego, Lady Crystallia. As the sole heir to the throne, Prince Sebastian is expected to uphold traditional norms, social expectations, and royal duties imposed by society. Despite these constraints, he chooses to express himself as Lady Crystallia at night, wandering the city and exploring fashion as a form of self-expression. This choice reflects his freedom while simultaneously revealing the limitations imposed by his social position and responsibilities. The study demonstrates that morals, norms, and rules are not intended to eliminate individual freedom but to emphasize that one person’s freedom is shaped and limited by the freedom of others. Drawing on Sartre’s existentialist concepts—such as absurdity, the look, authenticity, meaning, and bad faith—this research reveals Prince Sebastian’s divided existence. Ultimately, he embodies two identities: one constrained by societal norms and another representing his pursuit of authenticity and meaning in life.
