Abstract

This study examines the application of Geoffrey Leech’s politeness principles in the talk show “Culture Shock or Shock Culture, Which One?” to understand how politeness maxims contribute to effective communication. Using a qualitative approach, the dialogue was analyzed based on Leech’s six maxims: tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy. The findings reveal that all maxims are present, with the agreement maxim being the most frequently observed (4 instances), followed by the approbation maxim (3 instances), generosity maxim (2 instances), and tact and modesty maxims (1 instance each). The predominance of the agreement maxim highlights its role in fostering a harmonious conversational environment, avoiding conflict, and encouraging mutual respect. The tact maxim minimizes imposition, while the approbation maxim strengthens rapport by emphasizing praise. Additionally, the modesty maxim promotes humility, and the generosity maxim reflects the speakers’ willingness to prioritize others. These results suggest that politeness maxims are essential in maintaining positive and engaging talk show interactions, with the agreement maxim playing a central role in ensuring smooth and respectful discourse.

Phatic categories are linguistic elements that play a role in establishing and maintaining social interactions without conveying direct informational meaning. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes spoken data from Minangkabau speakers in Padang City, West Sumatra. The findings reveal that Minangkabau phatic expressions include bana, pun, juo, garan, ma/mah, ah, eh, a, ha, do, and lah, each serving specific social functions. For instance, bana expresses intensity, pun indicates addition/decision, eh is used by higher-status individuals toward lower-status ones, and do emphasizes denial. This study contributes to pragmatic and sociolinguistic research on regional languages, particularly in understanding the role of phatic expressions in Minangkabau society, which highly values politeness and social norms in communication.

Abstract

Abstract This research aims to explain how trauma transmission from the previous generation to the next generation occurs, and how the next generation cuts the intergenerational trauma off in Amy Tan’s The Bonesetter’s Daughter. Using a qualitative descriptive method and utilizing the postmemory theory by Marianne Hirsch, this research was finally finished. The three concepts of Hirsch, i.e., memory transmission, reconstruction, and identification, are the main tools in uncovering the questions of how the old generation’s memory is transmitted to the post-generation, and how the post-generation cuts off the intergenerational trauma. At the end of the research, the writers found: 1) There is a structure of familial memory transmission from the mother to the daughter and then to the granddaughter, known as affiliative transmission from the objects related to past trauma. 2) To break the chain of intergenerational trauma, the parties related to the trauma should make a serious effort to experience what-so-called post-generation reconciliation. The consciousness possessed by the post-generation draws itself to overcome the trauma passed down from the previous generation. Keywords: intergenerational trauma, transmission, post-generation, postmemory.
