The aims of the research was to find the signified and signifier of linguistic signs and signified and signifier of non-linguistic signs of traffic signs in Padang. The writer was interested in the theme because the use of signified and signifier in a sign is important. The object of the study is the signs located on Khatib Sulaiman Street, Padang. The type of the research is qualitative research. In collecting the data, the writer used purposive sampling technique. It means that the data were selected based on characteristic or criteria from the writer. The writer found ten traffic signs that were qualified for the study and divided them into linguistic sign and non-linguistic sign. The writer found that there were eight non-linguistic signs and two linguistic signs. All of the signs contained signified andsignifier on the sign. The signs were simple and understandable for the drivers. Without the signified and signifier, a sign was useless because it became misunderstood and did not have any meaning. The writer gives two suggestions for the next researcher. First, the next researcher can develop more about the sample of the traffic sign. Second, the next researcher can take different theory because the experts for semiotic are quite a lot.

This paper discusses about social class segregation in American Society especially in Manhattan as portrayed in The Zoo Story written by Edward Albee in 1958. The segregation can be seen through the social intercourse between Peter and Jerry, the main characters in this play. These characters are positioned in different social class because of the difference of educational and economic background. The writers use various sources to enrich their perspective and analysis taken from books and online sources. This research stands on the sociological side to view the problem why segregation may occur in real social life. To develop a good elaboration on the data found in the drama, the writers use sociological theory proposed by Pierre Bourdieu that focuses on educational and economic capital as the main factors to segregate people in human society. After conducting the research, the writers found that there is a social class segregation in American Society which is depicted in The Zoo Story. This fact encourages most Americans to realize the what-so-called American Dream which aims to have a good and happy life based on freedom and equality in all aspects of life without considering the race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, religion, employment status, and so on.

The tragedy of existence that appears in Fyodor Dostoevsky‘s novel entitled Notes from the Underground is analyzed by applying Jean-Paul Sartre‘s existentialism. The tragedy of man existence is originated from dualism of man freedom. It can be analyzed by applying the concept of absolute freedom which underlies man desire to achieve an ideal existence and the facticities that follow the freedom. Qualitative method that is based on Sartre‘s concept of engagement is applied to describe author‘s involvement as a speaker in literary work. Text is treated as a significant discourse, because words are not merely an object; but the signifiers that consist of meanings, issues, ideas, social situation in specific period. The result of the analysis shows that individual absolute freedom creates possibility to become God toward their own self to conduct acts as well as to recognize the aspects that prohibit them to do so. Man‘s individual freedom tries to surpass the limit, but eventually fails to realize it because of conflict among their consciousness. As the result, man fails to transcend their existence facticities because of other‘s freedom. At the end, it leads to tragedy that forms alienation in inauthentic existence.

William Wordsworth is mostly known as a poet, but in reality he also wrote a closet drama The Borderers. As an author, William Wordsworth is also influenced by his surrounding society, political movement, as well as philosophical ideas of Romanticism. As the result, most of his works contain the aspect of Romanticismsin the use of language as well as in developing the story. This research, tries to describe the Romantic aspects in William Wordsworth The Borderer, includingthe celebration of the nature, the importance of dream, and an interest toward social surrounding. In writing his work, Wordsworth not only describes thelandscape as it is, but he also adds his personal experience in exploring the countryside as well as in presenting his social critique. Wordsworth uses bothlandscape and dreams to criticize the society and to describe the possibility of good and bad in human nature. In consequence, The Borderers is not onlyconsidered as a common play but also a private writing about Wordsworth disappointment toward his social surrounding.

This article discusses about the implementation of contextual teaching learning (CTL) to solve three problems found in the teaching of integrated skills (Englishproficiency class): materials, methods (the integration of the four skills), and the students’ passiveness. Contextual teaching learning helps teachers relate materials or content to real world situations and motivate students to make connections between knowledge and its applications to their real lives or roles as family members, citizens, and workers and engage in the hard work that requires learning. This research was an action research done in three cycles and each cycle took five sessions with five phases: diagnosis, plan, action, and observation, evaluation and reflection. It was found that in the first cycle with five phases thethree problems found could be solved with the implementation of CTL, but there were still some students who were passive in the speaking activities in groupsbecause they had problems with their vocabulary, grammar, and self confidence. In addition, in the second cycle with five phases the problems found in the firstcycle could be handled, but there were still a few students that had the same problems found in the first cycle. Finally, in the third cycle with five phases againthe problems in the first cycle could be solved even though there was still one student who did not speak English actively.
