Abstract

This article aims at describing the importance of introducing various English language learning strategies to university students. Although in Indonesia, English has been studied from the basic education level, but such learning assessed less successful. It can be seen from the average students’ English skills which is still very minimal. One factor that affects the less successful of English learning was the lack of students’ knowledge about the English learning strategies. The result of the literature review showed that by introducing various English learning strategies to university students there are plenty of benefits both for the university students and lecturers. One of the benefits is it can help the university students to do some efforts in achieving the better learning target. Besides, the lecturers are also able to use the more effective learning method that can be applied in the class.Keywords: the importance of the introduction, learning strategies, English.

Abstract

Pronunciation is the most important part of speaking, and speaking is the primary part of language, we must speak with the proper pronunciation so that the opponent we are talking to catch our point, but we know that many people have nonnative errors in pronunciation since pronunciation is so hard to learn and there are barriers. This study aims to assess Indonesia student’s pre-service barrier in learning English pronunciation. In this study uses a qualitative approach with a methodology. The data sources used in this research were document, experience, and interviews. Interviews were conducted with the 10 of English students pre-service in Indonesia. The result show the barrier when learning pronunciation are including how to pronounce vowels, difficult to distinguish words that are almost the same, difficult to distinguish in the cluster, difficulties in producing consonants at the point of articulation, heredity and social factors also develop difficulties in learning, shocked when they were in college studying phonetic symbols because never got a pronunciation lesson, about which sound is right to say in a word, often confused, must choose which accent to use, the difference between the pronunciation of Indonesian and English as in English there is an emphasis in pronunciation.Pronunciation is the most important part of speaking, and speaking is the primary part of language, we must speak with the proper pronunciation so that the opponent we are talking to catch our point, but we know that many people have nonnative errors in pronunciation since pronunciation is so hard to learn and there are barriers. Abstract

This study examined the effect of using comic strips on comprehension of descriptive text. It employed a quasi-experimental design. A sample of seventh grade students of State Junior High School 3 of Pagedongan were randomly selected and divided into two groups: an experimental group (23 students) and a control group (23 students) in the academic year 2013/2014. Comic strips were used in the experimental group whereas the students in the control group were taught without the use of comic strips. The pre-test and post-test scores were statistically analyzed using Mann-Whitney. Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) stated 0.001. It was less than sig. 0.05. The result showed that comic strips gave effect to the students’ comprehension on descriptive text.
