Abstract

Pronunciation is the most important part of speaking, and speaking is the primary part of language, we must speak with the proper pronunciation so that the opponent we are talking to catch our point, but we know that many people have nonnative errors in pronunciation since pronunciation is so hard to learn and there are barriers. This study aims to assess Indonesia student’s pre-service barrier in learning English pronunciation. In this study uses a qualitative approach with a methodology. The data sources used in this research were document, experience, and interviews. Interviews were conducted with the 10 of English students pre-service in Indonesia. The result show the barrier when learning pronunciation are including how to pronounce vowels, difficult to distinguish words that are almost the same, difficult to distinguish in the cluster, difficulties in producing consonants at the point of articulation, heredity and social factors also develop difficulties in learning, shocked when they were in college studying phonetic symbols because never got a pronunciation lesson, about which sound is right to say in a word, often confused, must choose which accent to use, the difference between the pronunciation of Indonesian and English as in English there is an emphasis in pronunciation.Pronunciation is the most important part of speaking, and speaking is the primary part of language, we must speak with the proper pronunciation so that the opponent we are talking to catch our point, but we know that many people have nonnative errors in pronunciation since pronunciation is so hard to learn and there are barriers. Abstract

The lack of English teachers with a background in English Education Department in the institution of the course causes staff at the course institute to turn their brains to receive teachers who are not from an English Education Department background. With the presence of English teachers who are not graduates of English Education Department lowers the trust of parents to the professionalism of the course institution. This study aims to find out what methods are used by non-English teachers in teaching English in courses. Using qualitative descriptive methods, this study will explain the methods used by non-English teachers in teaching English in course. In the data collection, researchers interviewed four non-English teachers who taught at LKP Dunia Sausan. They are one kindergarten teacher, one elementary school teacher, and two students at one of the universities in Kudus. The result of the study was to apply Total Physical Response (TPR) method and singing method. Where, the TPR method is applied by two non-English teachers (students) and one non-English teacher. While, singing method is only applied by two non-English teachers (kindergarten teachers and elementary school teachers).

Abstract

This study aims to understand the effect of using movies in improving vocabulary and motivation to learn among students across different age groups in Pasucen Village, Trangkil, Pati. The research focuses on the relationship between the increase in vocabulary skill alongside motivation and the age group of the participants. Descriptive qualitative design is used as the method of the research. Data is collected through test, questionnaire and interview. The test is used to measure the vocabulary skill of the student before and after watching movies, while the questionnaire is used to know the students’ view about this method. The result shows that this method can increase the vocabulary of all students, but does not increase the motivation of all students in the same way.

Abstract

To help students survive and compete in global interaction, teachers have to facilitate their students to be able to gain such writing competence. The ability in conducting a good writing is unavoidable. This ability plays a significant role to get and express one’s idea, thought and opinions. Students have to be able to absorb the idea of the text and create a good writing in many kinds of text including hortatory explanation text. Having a good writing, they could write for various purposes; to write a job letter, to share their idea and thought in face book or blogs and to write their own report on science experiments. In some cases, in the process of constructing the writing a text, we found the most difficulty faced by the students was in creating outline. They will face difficulties to reach the indicator in writing a text. As an instructional tool, graphic organizers (GOs) have been highly recommended and used in contemporary classrooms. GOs are said to be particularly valuable. Writing a text will be easy for students when they understand how to organize ideas. Organizing ideas could be studied from graphic organizers technique. So, based on the previous cases, the writer considers that graphic organizers tend to help students to organize ideas in writing a text.Keywords: Graphic Organizers, Writing Skill, Hortatory Explanation Text.

Abstract

Vocabulary is an aspect that needs to be emphasized in learning English at the elementary school level because vocab is the basis of a language. The background of this research is students feel difficulty when understanding English material and quickly forget when memorizing vocabulary in English because of lack of enthusiastic learning. The purpose of this study is to describe the process of implementing learning using the Total Physical Response method to make easier to understand the vocabulary and how the responses from students and teacher after using this method. The research design used by the writer is descriptive qualitative method with observation and interview. The subjects of this study were 22 students in the fourth grade of MI Robayan. The writer covered the TPR method with picture cards and a song in the teaching and learning process. The results showed that with the TPR method students becomes easier to understand and remember vocabulary in English because they practice it physically and verbally. TPR Method Makes them feel comfortable and enjoy when learning, and motivates them to be more active in learning English.

Abstract

Teaching English to science students can be a lot more challenging compared to teaching it to English students due to the more basic but complex issues such as student motivation and perspective toward English learning which must be dealt with strategic approaches. This reflective study explored the use of needs analysis-based pedagogical approaches to teaching English to students of Science Education Department, IAIN Salatiga in the first semester of the academic year of 2016/2017. (1) Needs analysis form covering student attitude, choice of topic, and choice of types of learning activities, (2) direct classroom observation and (3) student post course evaluation sheet were in use to gather the data which later was analyzed quantitatively. The research found that, in an ESP class, conducting student needs analysis was paramount prior to designing pedagogical activities and had a significant contribution in the lesson plan decision-making with strong efficiency relevance in its learning application as student evaluation concluded with a high rated score. Keywords: English for science, needs analysis, approach

Abstract

English is approved as foreign language in Indonesian learner by distributing some aspect accepted there especially in culture. It involves Indonesian learner to explore it in globalization era. This causes the learner motivated that studying English is very important. So it is needed a new learning style to enrich reading, writing, listening and speaking skills by utilizing technology. It is blended learning that becomes one of the ways to improve English skills for the students. This research attempts at describing the use of blended learning in promote English skills at State Islamic Senior High School 01 Kudus. This is qualitative research. The data were collected by observing English teaching and learning using blended learning system and interviewing one of English teachers and five students at State Islamic Senior High School 01 Kudus. The result shows that the English teacher applied blended learning around two years. It is the combination between face-to-face classroom settings and using technology such as smartphone and computers of school. Students were asked to follow the teaching and learning English by using some applications, form and connecting the internet. The benefits and challenges will be faced in the teaching and learning activities. However, the students are more interested in promoting English skills by using blended learning.

Abstract

The growth of ICT facilitates lecturer to assess students’ understanding easily. Lecturer could use online tool such as Google form to conduct examination. This study wants to find out perception of university students using Google form in their examination. It is mixed method research. Quantitative research was conducted to find out the understanding level of the students. Qualitative research was used to analyze the perception of each level about Google form online examination. The data collecting techniques were test, questionnaire and document analysis. The result shows that the students’ perception of Google form online examination defers among each level of university students. Abstract

Teaching Grammar through fun learning can minimize the boredom of students. By adopting singing patterns, students can memorize the formula quickly. This study is a qualitative research. The result reveals that by incorporating the fun learnings of using comparison, singing and grammar puzzle, students become more critical and have a better understanding regarding formulas and patterns of Tenses. In addition, These methods are merely beneficial for students especially in learning vocabulary, pronunciation, speaking, listening, and grammar. This study presents implications of teaching English particularly Grammar using various methods including Comparison, Singing and Puzzle.
