Language is a means of communication closely related to social and cultural values. Translation as an intelligent process is a human activity that bridging the cultures. However it is not always easy when translator encounter the culture-items. This paper provided short overviewabout the emphasizing of culture awareness in translation teaching. The participants are the students of Law and Economic Faculty of Universitas Al-Azhar, Medan, Indonesia. Throughout the classroom activities: theories, discussion, practicing and response to questionnaire, the students encouraging to aware the cultural influences in translation. To do so, they need more practice with culture specific items that related to their subjects. Students were motivated in learning translation when they involve in discussion and using internet as the comparable source. By emphasizing the importance of cultural awareness, the students impulse to learn more about other culture as well as improving their target language competence to avoid mistranslation.

Rice without Rain (1986), written by the Chinese American writer, Minfong Ho (b. 1951), has been recognised internationally and awarded with numerous awards including Best Books for Young Adults (1991). Set in Thailand, the text is believed to have been overlooked in regards to works by Ho as scholarships on the issue of the Asian female identity through the lens of transculturalism are scarce. Previous scholarship on Rice without Rain, for example, focused more on the general identity of the female characters through the concepts of a “whole” self and female “space” for Thai and American-born Thai young women (Thongthiraj, 2006). We hypothesise here, however, that the true identity of the Asian female is reflected through the depiction of Jinda in Rice without Rain which is believed to contain the concepts of transculture/ality and identity fluidity. Here, we explore the concept of transculture/ality by the transcultural scholar, Arianna Dagnino (2015), as a platform to contest the current understanding of the Asian female identity by the scholar of English and Comparative Literature, Lalaine Yanilla Aquino (2011) who states that the Asian female identity is recognized culturally as powerless, voiceless and submissive. We examine how transculturalism forms the identity of the protagonist using the concept of transculture/ality by Dagnino and identity fluidity by the cultural theorist Stuart Hall (2011). Findings of this paper demonstrate the application of transculture/ality and identity fluidity in a work of literature revealing that Jinda contests the stereotypical understanding of the Asian Female identity reflecting transculture/ality and identity fluidity.

Melengkan is a custom in the plateau of Gayo performed at a wedding expressed in poetical, lyrical or proverbial form. The study is aimed at identifying the types and uses of figures of speech in Melengkan of Gayo wedding supported by the concept of figures of speech proposed by Kosasih (2007). The data were collected through observation and a video-recording of the traditional Gayo wedding. as well as interviews with melengkan performers under descriptive qualitative method (Best, 1982). The figures of speech used in Melengkan also reflect the cultural value of Gayo community with points of local wisdom. The findings showed that there were four classifications of figures of speech: Comparison, Substitution, Addition or Amplification, and Omission or suppression used in Melengkan. The cultural values of Melengkan are for remembrance of local wisdom, warnings from customary philosophy, religion, and also for giving advice and recalling the history and beauty of Melengkan speech. The context of using Melengkan is to perpetuate and reflect cultural values, namely, politeness, respect, speaking softly, friendliness and resoluteness. These findings imply the importance of conserving Melengkan as a part of the Gayo culture in every part of life.

The aims of this study were to observe the translation procedures to translate Sijalapen in Karonese Wedding Ceremony into English. The data of this study were found from the participant observation of the authors. There were six cultural terms in the groom’s party and five cultural terms in the bride’s party. All together were 11 cultural terms and they were the lucky numbers for Karonese society. They refered to Karonese belief of ersada tendi ku rumah means have all souls gathered at home. If their souls are all at home, they believe that they all had good health. It was believed because they did the ceremony of perumah tendi. It was the ceremony of asking for their tendi at home. The qualitative research was done to collect the data and did the analysis. Translation analysis, cultural analysis and discourse analysis were applied in doing this study. The result shows that the problems of untranslatability occur in the process of translation the SL into the TL. Newmark’s translation procedures were not workable, instead, Sembiring and Panggabean’s familiar translation procedure were used to translate sijalapen in Karonese wedding ceremony into English. The authors would recommend the researchers on untranslatability texts to use Sembiring and Panggabean’s translation procedure to overcome their translation process problems.

The objectives of this study were to describe how the teachers teach reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text to the eleventh grade students in Medan, Indonesia and to reveal the underlying reasons why they did that way. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of this study were two English teachers who taught at the eleventh grade students at SMA Methodist 8 Medan in academic year 2016/2017. The data were collected by observing, video recording and interviewing and analyzed by using Miles and Huberman technique (1994). The findings of the study showed that most of the teachers’ way are not yet focusing on teaching reading comprehension but rather focusing to the teaching the knowledge of the genre. The underlying reasons of the teachers’ ways in teaching reading comprehension did not facilitate reading comprehension. It was due to the misperception of the concept of teaching reading comprehension.

This research focused on the antagonist’s bad conduct of the play Hamlet written by William Shakespeare. The main analysis consists of several points. They were betrayal, greediness, and murder. It analyzed how the antagonist tries to satisfy what he wants. This research intends to highlight the people’s way of thinking in considering the way that they use to fulfill their desire. To fulfill their desire, they should use the good ways and consider the negative impact that will be happen for themselves and their surrounding people. They should be able to control their copious desire otherwise they can be a greedy man. On the contrary the antagonist as the character that is discussed in this research has used the bad ways and did not think about the negative impact that will happen. So that, this antagonist’s bad conduct has brought the great disaster for himself and his surrounding people. Finally, through this analysis, the researchers hope that this research will be useful for the readers in considering the way that they use to get their desire.

The research is about the analysis of the emotion of some characters in Karchman’s novel Master of the Jin. The purpose of this research to describe types of emotion shown by the main characters emotions of the character in the novel Sang Raja Jin. Feelings and emotions are generally dubbed as state existing in the individual or organism at a time. For example, a person feels sad, happy, afraid, angry or other symptoms after seeing, hearing, or feeling something. In other words, feelings and emotions are characterized as a psychological state in organisms or individuals as a result of events or circumstances experienced by the organism. (Izard, 1990). This research used qualitative descriptive method and psychology literature approach (Moleong, 2010) The source of data was derived from the novel Sang Raja Jin. The finding shows that both the positive and the negative emotions are found in the novel. The positive emotions are love and happy emotion. Meanwhile, the negative emotions were anxious, fear, anger, sad emotion.

The design of the development of learning methods involves the pattern of organizing elements or components in the curriculum. the development of learning materials listening to correlated core-based learning with the application of listening in action methods seen from two dimensions, namely horizontal and vertical dimensions. The horizontal dimension is related to the compilation of the scope of learning content. This spatial arrangement is often integrated with the learning and teaching process. The vertical dimension concerns the compilation of material sequences based on the order of difficulty. Arranged materials start from the easy ones, then go to the more difficult ones, or start with the basic ones followed by the continuation. This development describes in detail about the components that must be present in each listening learning material that can be used for the learning process. The design of the development of the listening learning material consists of several components, including the objectives of the curriculum, teaching materials or the material or content of the curriculum, teaching strategies or teaching methods, teaching media and teaching evaluation and improving teaching. These components are related to each other in the development of learning materials listening to correlated core-based learning by applying listening in action methods.

Language acquisition is essentially needed to sustain human socialization through communication towards one another. The purpose of this paper is to show that the language functioned as a universal language can literally support the continuity of human life in the work, business, and education. Society often neglects the importance of language and only regards language as a superficial subject to be studied. As the saying goes “Language is art”, needless to say, it truly proves that language is also related to literature which produces many contribution to literary works. Strong language literature is also an excellent phenomenon in human communication such as drama, poetry, and novel. Novel, a literary work that until now still in demand by literary fans, is a media that indirectly bring together the author with the reader. The author conveys his message to the reader through the novel. The findings of this research found that language plays an important role in maintaining and preserving human existence in communication. Language is a crucial element in implementing human body language. The expertise of the person in the language shows his skills and qualities.

This study was carried out to find out the readability level of the reading texts in English Zone textbook by using Flesch Reading Ease Formula and Cloze Test at the tenth-grade students of SMA N 2 Bandar. The population of this research was the tenth-grade students of SMA N 2 Bandar. The textbook consists of 181 pages with 29 reading texts in it. The researcher took 5 reading texts from the English textbook entitled English Zone published by Penerbit Erlangga and the tenth-grade students of 30 students as the sample. The method used in this study was descriptive analysis using quantitative data. The instruments of the research were Flesch Reading Ease Formula and Cloze Test. The data were analyzed using Flesch Reading Ease Formula which is focused on the average number of the syllables per words. The result of the analysis by using Flesch Reading Ease Formula is grouped into three levels which are Very Easy, Easy, and Fairly Easy. The average readability score for all texts is 82.6 which implies that the texts are in Fairly Easy Level. The result of the analysis by using Cloze Test, the average readability score of the five texts is 51.20% (Independent Level), the texts are predicted to be of appropriate difficulty. Thus, it could be concluded that the reading texts were in the English Zone textbook were not suitable to be used by the students at the tenth-grade students of SMA N 2 Bandar.
