Abstract

This paper aims to find out the types of pragmatic failures that can lead to incorrect understanding of meaning by the audience. Pragmatic failure in translation consists of two failures, namely: pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure. Pragmalinguistic failures in translation are analyzed using speech act theory proposed by Searle and deixis theory proposed by Levinson. Sociopragmatic failures in translation are analyzed using the principle of cooperation theory proposed by Grice and the principle of politeness theory proposed by Brown and Levinson. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. One hundred seventy-six pragmatic failures are found in the subtitles of Moonlight movie, which is divided into one hundred thirty-six pragmalinguistic failures and forty sociopragmatic failures. Pragmalinguistic failures that occur are the failures to transfer speech acts and deixis of oral speech into subtitles. Sociopragmatic failures that occur are the failures to transfer principle of cooperation of oral speech into subtitles.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to describe how the teachers teach reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text to the eleventh grade students in Medan, Indonesia and to reveal the underlying reasons why they did that way. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of this study were two English teachers who taught at the eleventh grade students at SMA Methodist 8 Medan in academic year 2016/2017. The data were collected by observing, video recording and interviewing and analyzed by using Miles and Huberman technique (1994). The findings of the study showed that most of the teachers’ way are not yet focusing on teaching reading comprehension but rather focusing to the teaching the knowledge of the genre. The underlying reasons of the teachers’ ways in teaching reading comprehension did not facilitate reading comprehension. It was due to the misperception of the concept of teaching reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research is entitled The Effects of Elementary  Students' Comprehension of English Vocabulary When Using Gadgets. This research analyzes the positive and negative effects of elementary students' English vocabulary comprehension when using gadgets. Second language acquisition theory is used to classify the data. The methods used in this research are descriptive-qualitative and observational. The data for this research is the English vocabulary contained in four gadgets and images contained in game applications that use English. The data source is four elementary school students from Karya Sukadamai Street, Sei Agul District, Medan, playing English games on their gadgets. The research found that gadget use has two positive and negative effects on elementary school students' understanding of English vocabulary. It has also been shown that elementary school students unconsciously acquire English vocabulary through learning, as explained in the first hypothesis of Stephen Krashen's theory of second language acquisition.Keywords: Elementary students , English vocabulary, Gadgets, Second language acquisition.

Abstract

TOEFL sebagai tes Bahasa inggris yang diperuntukkan untuk mengukur kemampuan seseorang dalam bahasa Inggris, terutama bagi mereka yang bukan penutur asli bahasa Inggris mendorong pelajar untuk belajar lebih jauh salah satunya adalah dengan melakukan pembeljaran mandiri. Self-directed ataupun pembelajaran mandiri adalah proses pembelajaran di mana individu mengambil inisiatif untuk merencanakan, melaksanakan, dan mengevaluasi pembelajaran mereka sendiri. Penenlitian ini dilakasanakan secara quantitative dan kualitatif. Secara kuantitaif dilakukan dengan memberikan Angket kepada para pelajar yang akan mengikuti test TOEFL sebanyak 30 orang dan sedang mengikuti kelas pelatihan TOEFL. Secara kualitatif adalah dengan mengadakan  wawancara terhadap 6 orang partisipan yang diambil dari 3 pelajar dengan motivasi tinggi dan 3 orang pelajar dengan motivasi rendah. Data wawancara dianalisis menggunakan Analisis Tematik (Maguire & Delahunt, 2017) yang dilakukan melalui anotasi pada setiap transkrip wawancara dengan tema-tema potensial. Dari hasil angket dan wawancara yang diberikan kepada para siswa dapat disimpulkan bahwa pelajar yang memiliki motivasi tinggi cenderung akan melakukan pembelajaran secara mandiri daripada siswa dengan motivasi rendah. Hal ini dikarenakan siswa dengan motivasi tinggi biasanya telah menetapkan tujuan dan target yang akan dicapai sehingga mereka terkadang tidak merasa puas dengan apa yang hanya mereka dapatkan dari kelas pelatihan TOEFL.

Abstract

Mitra pengabdian mengalami kurangnya implementasi teknologi informasi dalam pembelajaran, dan masih didominasi penggunaan model pembelajaran konvensional. Solusi yang ditawarkan adalah pelatihan pengintegrasian platform Youtube dalam konteks pembelajaran dengan fokus pada model pembelajaran Project-Based Learning. Pengintegrasian bertujuan meningkatkan pemanfaatan teknologi informasi dalam proses pengajaran di SMPN 9 Payakumbuh. Model pembelajaran ini dianggap sebagai pendekatan yang sesuai untuk mengakomodasi kebutuhan pembelajaran siswa di era digital. Pembelajaran berbasis proyek mendorong partisipasi aktif siswa, dan penggunaan platform Youtube membuka peluang ekspresi dan memperluas wawasan siswa. Dengan solusi ini, guru dapat beradaptasi dengan tren pembelajaran yang berkembang dan tidak terbatas pada model konvensional. Hasil dari Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat menunjukkan pencapaian tujuan yang signifikan dalam meningkatkan kompetensi pedagogik guru SMPN 9 Payakumbuh. Peserta pelatihan mampu mengikuti materi dengan baik, serta mampu menghasilkan konten video pembelajaran dengan kualitas yang baik. Ini mengindikasikan peningkatan kompetensi pedagogik guru yang berkontribusi positif dalam proses pembelajaran di sekolah.

Abstract

The article discusses the challenges in traditional educational assessment methods, such as limited personalization, inefficient feedback, and an overemphasis on lower-order thinking skills. The study aims to explore the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in educational assessment, identifying current trends, assessing its impact on learning, and forecasting future developments. A systematic literature review (SLR) was employed to examine the integration of AI in both formative and summative assessments. The findings reveal that AI-based assessment systems provide adaptive, personalized feedback, promote student engagement, and foster individualized learning paths. AI technologies, like machine learning and natural language processing, are particularly effective in providing real-time feedback and evaluating higher-order competencies, including critical thinking and creativity. However, challenges such as data privacy and algorithmic bias remain critical concerns. The study concludes that AI has significant potential to transform educational assessment, offering more dynamic, efficient, and personalized evaluation methods. Future research should focus on addressing ethical concerns like data privacy and algorithmic bias while enhancing AI-driven assessments' adaptability and scalability to support diverse learner needs.

Abstract

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has transformed how students learn, particularly in fostering self-regulated learning (SRL). However, understanding the mechanisms and conditions under which AI adoption influences SRL remains underexplored. This study investigates the roles of achievement goals, cognitive load, personalized learning, students' adaptability, and AI competence in shaping SRL within an AI-enhanced educational framework. The research employs Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach to analyze direct, mediating, and moderating effects while accounting for demographic controls such as age, gender, internet access, and environment. The findings reveal a complex interplay of factors. Direct effect testing showed that five hypothesized relationships, including the influence of achievement goals, cognitive load, personalized learning, and students’ adaptability on SRL, were unsupported. Mediation analysis confirmed that AI adoption significantly mediates the effects of achievement goals, cognitive load, and personalized learning on SRL, emphasizing the role of technology acceptance in enhancing learning autonomy. Moderation analysis identified that AI competence strengthens the relationship between achievement goals and SRL but does not moderate other interactions, such as those involving AI adoption or cognitive load. These results underscore the nuanced dynamics between cognitive, technological, and motivational factors in AI-enhanced learning. The study contributes to the growing literature on AI-driven education by highlighting the pivotal role of mediating variables like AI adoption and the limited yet strategic influence of AI competence. Future research should explore broader contextual and pedagogical factors to optimize the integration of AI tools in fostering self-regulated learning

Abstract

Rendahnya hasil belajar siswa pada mata pelajaran Dasar-Dasar Busana, khususnya materi penyelesaian garis leher, menjadi permasalahan yang dihadapi di SMKN 8 Padang. Lebih dari 60% siswa belum mencapai Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) karena metode pembelajaran yang masih konvensional menggunakan powerpoint dan fragmen, sehingga siswa kesulitan memahami detail langkah pengerjaan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh penggunaan video tutorial sebagai media pembelajaran yang dinilai mampu memberikan pengalaman belajar lebih interaktif, fleksibel, dan dapat diulang sesuai kebutuhan siswa. Jenis penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif dengan metode Quasi Experiment menggunakan desain Posttest-Only Design with Nonequivalent Groups. Subjek penelitian adalah 48 siswa kelas X Busana SMKN 8 Padang tahun ajaran 2025/2026 yang terbagi menjadi 24 siswa kelas eksperimen dan 24 siswa kelas kontrol. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa tes keterampilan, sedangkan analisis data dilakukan melalui uji deskriptif, uji normalitas, homogenitas, uji-t, dan perhitungan effect size.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan nilai rata-rata post-test kelas eksperimen 79,13 dengan ketuntasan 58%, sedangkan kelas kontrol 65,58 dengan ketuntasan 25%. Uji-t menghasilkan Sig. (2-tailed) < 0,05 yang berarti terdapat pengaruh signifikan penggunaan video tutorial terhadap hasil belajar siswa. Nilai effect size sebesar 1,1 termasuk kategori tinggi. Dengan demikian, video tutorial efektif digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran untuk meningkatkan keterampilan siswa pada materi busana.

Abstract

The study background related to the students' collaborative competence in digital learning is still relatively low. The objective of this study is to examine the elements influencing collaborative competence. The study involved 107 cosmetology and beauty education students. The method used was a survey with data collection using questionnaires developed based on predetermined variable indicators. The analysis of data employed Structural Equation Model-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) with Smart PLS 4.0 software. The SEM results describe the Convergent Validity (Loading Factor and Average Variance Extracted) and Discriminant Validity (Fornell Larcker Criterion and Cross Loading), which states that the measurement model is valid. Furthermore, the Composite reliability and Cronbach's Alpha conclude that the measurement model is reliable. The analysis results indicate a positive and significant correlation of predictor variables, including project-based learning, social media, instructional approach, and material relevance to collaborative competence. Based on the variable analysis, material relevance becomes the highest aspect, followed by project-based learning, which increases the collaborative competence of students. Conversely, social media as a mediator variable weakens the level of correlation of the predictor variables to collaborative competence. This study contributes to understanding factors affecting students' collaborative competence in digital learning environments, with significant implications for educators, institutions, and policymakers in shaping digital learning frameworks enhancing collaborative competence. Future research, including longitudinal studies, could investigate the lasting impact of digital learning environments on developing collaborative competence over time.

Abstract

Busana pengantin tradisional Minangkabau adalah salah satu hasil budaya yang mengandung banyak makna yang membentuk identitas dan nilai masyarakat. Namun, perubahan signifikan telah terjadi pada tata busana, desain, dan cara pemakaian busana pengantin tradisional Pesisir Padang, terutama di kalangan generasi muda. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk menggambarkan persepsi mahasiswa PKK UNP mengenai perubahan busana pengantin tradisional, ditinjau berdasarkan tata busana, desain, dan cara pemakaian. Sebanyak 52 mahasiswa berpartisipasi sebagai responden dalam studi yang menerapkan metode kuantitatif deskriptif ini. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuesioner berbasis skala Likert yang disusun berdasarkan aspek kognitif, afektif, konatif dan diolah menggunakan statistik deskriptif. Data yang terkumpul memperlihatkan bahwa persepsi mahasiswa secara umum berada pada kategori sedang. Pada aspek tata busana, persentase kategori sedang mencapai 84,6% (kognitif), 76,9% (afektif), dan 73,1% (konatif). Persepsi terhadap desain busana juga tergolong sedang (69,2%, 75,0%, dan 73,1%), begitu pula pada cara pemakaian (69,2%, 73,1%, dan 75,0%). Aspek kognitif menunjukkan pemahaman mahasiswa terhadap bentuk perubahan yang tetap mencerminkan nilai budaya. Aspek afektif mencerminkan ketertarikan terhadap inovasi yang sesuai perkembangan zaman, sedangkan aspek konatif menunjukkan dukungan terhadap perubahan selama nilai adat Minangkabau tetap dijaga. Dengan demikian, modernisasi busana pengantin dapat diterima sepanjang tetap menjaga keseimbangan antara nilai estetika dan filosofi budaya Minangkabau.
